<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
tionnement.

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

"Control device for fuel-operated draft, mixed air and hot water heaters.
The object of the invention is a control device for fresh air, mixed air and hot water heaters, operated by means of fuel, and, in particular, devices of this kind for motor vehicles which necessitated , for starting, an electric ignition means coming into action for a short time, for example after a temporary stopping of combustion, which moreover takes place without ignition means, and in which there is provided a means of protection against overheating in order to avoid this phenomenon in the * of combustion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The problem which is the basis of the invention is to realize the control device of the electric ignition means in such a way that the latter is disconnected when the appliance comes into action, immediately after the start. of the combustion already, and, consequently, While the temperature of the apparatus is still relatively low, and, on the other hand, that, on the other hand, the ignition means is immediately reactivated after an untimely extinguishing of the flame,
for example in the event of operating disturbances and relatively high temperature of the device. The aim is to obtain an aorta of hysteresis of the ignition phase by means of an appropriate embodiment of the control device, the action of which is shown in the diagram, by an appropriate shape of the disconnection and reconnection curves for different operating temperatures. .
The subject of the invention is also an embodiment of the control device for the means of protection against overheating which ensures the automatic re-establishment of the apparatus in the operating conditions, without additional manipulation, when the possible overheating temperature, in the combustion zone of the appliance has been reduced to the level of the operating temperature. This requires remedying the drawback residing in the fact that, until now, after overheating had occurred, only the replacement of a circuit breaker had to be carried out to restore the device to the conditions specific to the operation.
Before approaching the devices already known for this purpose and citing other subjects of the invention, it is appropriate to explain the principles of operation and construction generally valid for the types of devices mentioned initially. The heating agent which provides the heat exchange and the fuel used for combustion are of secondary importance here.

Up to now, the above-mentioned circuit breaker has been commonly used for protection against overloading, it is recommended to take the form of a low contact air valve which, its * upper temperature limit being exceeded * in the switch of heat, interrupted the electrical connection after a fuel shut-off, so that this valve acted as a shut-off member for the fuel.

The characteristic of these known devices is that they switch off the ignition means for an initial temperature of approx. 40 C in the combustion sound system and that its failure ** in circuit no. It is possible that after any disturbance or interruption the tubular system at a significantly higher operating temperature is cooled to below this level of 40 C.
This drawback has the effect that the use of such a device is complicated * and unsafe, since the moment of automatic re-activation of the ignition means cannot draw as expected and depends on various secondary conditions, for example the outside temperature and the operating temperature of the appliance. Another consequence is that the atmosphere around such an apparatus is loaded with odors coming from the exhaust of unburned bran, which also entails the danger of gas accumulation and explosion.
We can say that, among the noma thermostats, semiconductors, for example, are characterized by the fact that they require a high expenditure in electrical accessories (current source, relays) and that the bimetal and expandable bar regulators , on the other hand, can only be used in relatively small models for reasons of space and to have a better responsiveness, which in turn adversely influences their energy for emission. electrical contact * In these cases, relays are required. to obtain the high breaking power * requirements of the ignition current for example.
Barely to the invention, these drawbacks are avoided and the conditions required for triggering hysteresis for the ignition means and for an overload protection means.

automatically restoring heaters, are met by the fact that the thermal expansion said the heat exchanger and the heating tube, or the heating tube alone, acts directly on electromechanical contact systems, for example snap-action microswitches , so that the reactivity of the heating tube, increased by thermal expansion, influences, with the heat exchanger which expands more slowly, the contact system of the ignition medium,
while the heating tube, when a defined operating temperature is exceeded, acts on the contact system of the overheating protection hub.
The differences in expansion between the heating tube and the heat exchanger, resulting from the admission of different heat, are used with a view to obtaining a cut-off hysteresis for the control phase of the means d. 'ignition, while the expansion of the heating tube immediately triggers the means of protection against overheating *
By cut-off hysteresis is meant here a phase of the actuation of the control device which determines the disconnection of the ignition means when the device starts operating and, consequently, in the case of a relatively low starting temperature, which is the case shortly after the start of combustion, while after the operating temperature is reached,
depending on the operating time, the permanent readiness for rapid connection of the ignition means is ensured by the fact that the heat exchanger, which in the meantime expands more strongly as a result of the subsequent heat input, maintains the possibility of shutdown of the contact system approximately constant or the rule to a smaller value, which assures rapid responsiveness.
It should be noted, in these measurements, that the dilatâmes'
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
heat from the heating tube is transmitted to the heat exchanger thanks to the mechanical connection created by the radial channels, and the thermal expansion of the heat exchanger is propagated, from the radial channels, in the opposite direction to that of the expansion of the heating tube.
It is considered advantageous to connect the heating tube, at one of its ends, in a fixed manner, with the envelope tube, by means of a section of radial tube suitable for housing the spiral incandescent wire, so that the heating tube expands towards the hot air outlet.
The rigid connection produced by means of the radial channels between the heating tube and the heat exchanger first of all transmits the expansion of the heating tube to the heat exchanger; this one will present, during a progressive heating)) an expansion in the opposite direction and the expansion will be beforehand taken up by a tube & gas burnt leading outside by the envelope tube and freely movable with respect to it. this*
The contact system for controlling the ignition means is, on the one hand, fixed to the cellar sube and, on the other hand, in control connection with the free end of the heat exchanger, while the contact system for the overheating protection means is, on the one hand, also fixed to the casing tube and, on the other hand,
actuated by the free end of the heating tube.
The snap-action microswitches mentioned here are known and are already employed as safe switching elements in the art of aviation. The energy coming from the heat exchanger and from the heating tube is sufficient to safely actuate these switches, which in turn have sufficient electrical breaking power to intervene immediately with a view to cutting off the electrical ignition means. for example.

in operation of the appliance In the cold state, ie A will say at the start-up temperature.
When, after a certain time of operation, the appliance has reached the working temperature, the heat exchanger 2 will expand and will tend to exert a closing effect on the contact system 3. This is, however, regulated in such a way. so that a contact does not occur and the spiral incandescent wire 9 remains off, that is to say without current.
The cause of the delay of the thermal expansion of the heat exchanger 2 compared to that of the heating tube 1, even after the working temperature has been reached, is the decrease in heat of the combustion gases in these tubes. . Said it
EMI10.4
Cleti-kodire temperature expansion thus occurring remains during operation and exits the connection to system 3.
The normal operating state, such as combustion, while the spiral incandescent wire 9 is off, may end or be interrupted for a short time by a desired maneuver or by a disturbance of the heater.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
operation. Putting the device back into operation after such a shutdown or such a disturbance presupposes, as has already been said above, its prior cooling. The control device left the incandescent wire off-circuit for the duration of the cooling down to a temperature below the starting temperature of the apparatus, starting from the cold state.
If the normal operating state has been interrupted due to a disturbance, for example by stopping the fuel supply, there is a risk that the fuel supply will resume before the means of The ignition does not come back on or cannot be switched on again, which would lead to the unfortunate phenomena already indicated.
The following measures are planned to avoid this drawback: the heating tube 1, because of its smaller cross-section and its immediate contact with the flame cone, is, compared to the heat exchanger 2, l 'element. exhibiting the highest thermal reaction power compared to its thermal expansion. It therefore contracts faster than heat exchanger 2 when combustion ceases and, conversely, expands faster when combustion takes place. It is for this reason that the closing of the contact of the control device already occurs shortly after the flame has gone out, which can immediately lead to a new ignition or ensures the preparation for ignition of the spiral filament wire 9 .
The state of readiness for ignition is therefore immediately followed by the cessation of combustion, that is to say the extinction of the flame, it continues until, due to the resumption of combustion. combustion, there is an increase in the temperature of the heating tube 1 or a new expansion of the latter.

The ordinates and the abscissa show the corresponding values of the expansion in function of time * Curve III indicates the difference in expansion between the heating tube and the heat exchanger as a function of the evolution of time after the start of combustion and after the flame has gone out. This expansion step following curve III is used for the actuation of a
Micro-switch with snap action at 0.3 mm, for example, cut-off distance.
The point of intersection of the line of 0.3 mm with the curve III gives the cut-off point or the time of disconnection after the start of combustion and after the flame has gone out, for example in the event of a disturbance of the operation.
Fig. 3 shows a fresh air heater which shows the use, by way of example, of the control device for connection and disconnection of the ignition means. In this case, we have left aside the representation of the control device according to the invention for the device for protection against overheating in particular; only the position of the snap-action microswitch 22 is shown.
As the contact system of the control device for the ignition means (according to the reference number 3 in figure 1), a snap-action microswitch 16 is provided,
The exterior construction of this apparatus further comprises a casing tube 17, a blower 18, a fuel level regulator 19, with fuel supply 20, and an electromagnet valve 21. The wire support incandescent 15 carries, by means of the fastening collar 23 (figure 4) and the support plate 24, in the form of a U, the sudden-breaking microswitch 16, which, on its cover, is provided with terminals 25
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
for the electrical connections *.
From the bottom of this snap-action microswitch 16 comes out the contact pin 26 (figure 4), which actuates the contacts and to which the burnt gas tube 13 is applied for this purpose.
An attachment collar 27, with elastic gasket, connects the burnt gas tube 13 to a duct leading outside, the free mobility of the burnt gas tube 13, under the influence of the expansion of the heating tube and of the heat exchanger, is provided with respect to the envelope tube 17, as well as with respect to a duct leading 4 outside.
Another fastening collar 28 connects the blower 18 to the envelope tube 17, the possibility of arranging a tubular spacer being ensured. The blower 18 can thus be placed away from the place of mounting of the heating device. A screw terminal 29 of the incandescent wire support 15 creates the electrical connection with the terminal block 30, one pole of the electrical conductor being formed by the ground of the heating appliance *
Figure 4 shows an essential detail of the control device for the ignition means, in a section taken along the line A-B of Figure 3, this serving to explain the mode of operation of the ignition means.
The iman wire holder, descence 15 is shown with the collar 23 and the U-shaped support plate 24, in a view allowing the apparatus to be viewed from below. The snap-action microswitch 16 is, in this case, seen from the side and the contact pin 26 is shown in its rail position relative to the flue gas tube 13. The arrows, in the flue gas tube 13, give the direction of movement of this element under the influence of the thermal expansion of the heating tube 1 and of the heat exchanger 2.
The terminals 25, on the cover of the snap-action microswitch 26, even says that the terminal block 30 of the extended arm of the collar 23 are the auxiliary means.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
necessary for the connection and binding of the electrical part of the appliance. It is here essential that the snap-action microswitch 16 is located, through its contacts, in the circuit of the ignition means, therefore spiral filament wire 9, whereby the supply of electrical energy transferred by a current source, for example a vehicle battery 31, is at times interrupted.
Such a circuit is shown schematically in Figure 1, where the snap-action microswitch 16 is designated by the reference numeral 3.
Examination of Fig. 1 further enables to understand the effect, for the overheating protection means, of a control pulse supplied by the control device for the ignition means. Here comes the thermal expansion of the heating tube 1, which, when an upper temperature limit value is exceeded, that is to say when an overheating occurs, causes the interruption of a circuit in which In addition to the battery 31 of the vehicle and the contact system of the snap-action microswitch 32 (corresponding to 22 in figure 3), there is also the electromagnet valve 21, serving as a shut-off device for the supply of fuel.
The control pulse of the heating tube 1 is transmitted by a bar 14, which, moreover, serves, along with several others, as a guide means and as a spacer between the heat exchanger 2 and the envelope tube. 17. Such a bar 14 passes through an opening of the casing tube 17 to reach the outside and extend into the zone of the contact pin of the quick-break microswitch 22, the contacts of which are normally in position. closing. This closed position ceases to exist only through a particularly strong thermal expansion of the heating tube, following the appearance of overheating, for example in the event of a disturbance in operation, and that thanks to the pulse transmitted in this case to the contact pin by the bar 14.
