<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Process for the polymerization of α-olefins to obtain macromoleoular products having high stereo-regularity".
It is known that α-olefins can be polymerized under low pressure in the presence of catalysts which consist of combinations of compounds of the elements of subgroups IV-VIII of the periodic table with organometallic compounds of groups I - III of the classification. periodic,
It is furthermore known that suitable catalysts
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
However, not all polymerization of ethylene by the low pressure process is suitable for the polymerization of propylene or higher α-olefins, especially when seeking to obtain polymers having a substantially stereoregular structure.
In almost all the processes known hitherto for the polymerization of α-olefins containing more than 2 carbon atoms, the catalysts used are in combination with a compound of a transition metal used as one of the components. catalyst, in particular TiCl4, organometallic compounds, especially organoaluminum compounds, in which all or most of the metal values are saturated with alkyl or aryl groups.
Corresponding organometallic compounds are also used to promote polymerization. Thus, an organoaluminum compound can be used in which two valences are saturated with alkyl or aryl groups while the third valence is saturated with halogen, hydrogen or an alkoxy group. Obviously, salts- compounds of this kind, such as triethylaluminum, diethylaluminum monochloride and dietiy-oxyethylaluminum, are capable of forming with the transition metal compound the form capable of activating the polymerization. . When, however, compounds poorer in metal-carbon bonds are used, for example monoethylaluminum dichloride, no active catalyst is obtained. Likewise, polymerization cannot be activated with such compounds.
In German patent applications released to public inspection under Nos. 1,109,894 and 1,109,895 dated April 27, 1957 and dated October 19, 1957, respectively, and in United States patent No. 2909,511 dated 20 November 1958 in which processes for the preparation of α-olefin polymers have been described, it has been found, inter alia,

Now the Applicant has discovered that it is possible to transform α-olefins corresponding to the general formula CH2 = CHR in which R represents H or an aliphatic chain which is unsubstituted or substituted by alkyl or phenyl groups and containing 1-12 atoms of carbon, in macromolecular substances, by carrying out the polymerization in the presence of catalysts obtained by reaction of titanium halides; alkylaluminum dihalides and ammonium halides.
As titanium halides, chlorides, bromides or iodides can be used. Preferably, Ticl4 or its reduction product TiCl3 is used.
The alkylaluminum dihalides to be used in the process which is the subject of the invention are generally present in dimeric form and correspond to formula (RAlXY) 2 in which R represents an alkyl group containing 1-14 carbon atoms, X represents F, Cl, Br or I and Y represents F, Cl, Br or I.
Preferably, monoethylaluminum dichloride is used.
As ammonium halides, NH4Cl, NH4Br or NH4I, preferably NH4C1, can be used.
It is surprising that the method object of 1; invention can be realized, because Table 1 clearly shows that, for example, propylene cannot be polymerized at all under atmospheric pressure in the presence of a catalyst consisting of TiC14 and AlC2H5C12 and that ethylene cannot be polymerized under the same conditions as with a very low yield. Even under a pressure of 6 effective atmospheres, propylene is very "difficult to polymerize using this catalyst system (see Table 1, e).
The mechanism of activation of the inactive TiCl3 / monoalkylaluminum dihalide catalyst system by ammonium halides has not yet been fully understood.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
However, the possibility must be excluded that, by disproportionation reaction of monoalkylaluminum dihalide, dialkylaluminum monohalide is formed which, as is known, forms an active system for the polymerization of olefins with titanium halides (see Table 1, f) and h). No dialkyl aluminum halide could be isolated from the catalyst mixture.
The mixed catalyst suitable for the polymerization of @ - olefins according to the invention and which has a high stereo-
Specificity can be prepared by proceeding as follows: mixing ammonium halide, monoethyl aluminum dihalide and TiCl3 in an inert solvent in the reaction vessel. The AlC2H5Hal2: NH4Hal ratio can
Sire between 4: 1 and 0.25: 1 and it is preferably 1: 1. The AlC2H5a12: TiC3 ratio can vary within wide limits, for example between 20 and 1, preferably a ratio of 2-10 is used.
As dispersants for the polymerization, it is advantageously possible to use aliphatic hydrocarbons such as hexane, heptane or a fraction of mineral oil boiling between 180 and 200 C, carefully freed of compound and sulfur, of unsaturated compounds and traces of moisture. The α-olefin to be polymerized is introduced into the catalyst suspension. The polymerization can be carried out at temperatures between 20 and 150 ° C., advantageously at temperatures between 40 and 90 C. Polymerization can be carried out under atmospheric pressure or under overpressure (1-50 effective atmospheres). Preferably, a low overpressure (3-6 effective atmospheres) is used.
It is also possible to prepare the active catalyst in the following manner: reducing TiCl4 in an inert solvent with a monoethylaluminum dihalide in
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
excess to obtain TiCl3 and before, during or after this reaction, an ammonium halide is introduced into the reaction vessel. The catalyst dispersion thus obtained can be used for the polymerization, while using the same solvents, temperatures and pressures as mentioned above.
In this case, the AlCDH5Ha12 / TiC14 ratio can also vary within wide limits, for example between 20 and 1.
There is an advantage in using a 10-3 ratio.
According to the simplest and most advantageous mode of polymerization, the vessel / is introduced either one after the other, or simultaneously, a finely pulverized ammonium halide and the unwashed reaction product of tetrachloride, of
EMI7.1
titanium and an excess mono'e 1 aluminum dihalide in the desired amount (0.5 - 50 millimoles ci / l of solvent).
Polymerization can be carried out continuously or batchwise.
As the monomers to be polymerized or copolyinated there can be used, for example, ethylene, propylene, Bv tene- (1), pentene- (1), 3-methylbutene- (1), 4-methyl- pentene- (1), 4-phenylbutene- (1), hexene- (1), undecene- (1), etc.
The process which is the subject of the invention offers considerable advantages over the known processes for the polymerization of α-olefins.
It is not necessary to subject the catalyst to special treatment /, for example, to separate it into a fine dispersion fraction and a large dispersion, respectively (see Italian Patent No. 526,101 - dated December 3, 1954), washing it, preparing it at low temperatures and heating it at high temperatures, to increase the stereo-specificity, both given that, probably due to the special arrangement of the substituents in the catalyst complex
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
otherwise, the polymer molecule has an essentially stereo-regular structure (90% isotactic products) when using monomers, for example propylene, which allow such a structure.
Further, the alkyl aluminum dihalide necessary for the preparation of the catalyst can be obtained more easily and cheaper than the highly alkylated organoaluminum compounds and, moreover, it can be handled with less danger.
In addition, it should be noted that the activation of the catalyst with highly alkylated organoaluminum compounds which is ordinarily necessary to obtain high polymerization rates is made superfluous by the process object of the invention, which further reduces the costs of the process. according to the invention and eliminates another source of danger.
The ammonium halides required for catalyst activation are inexpensive, easy to handle substances.
The polymers obtained by the process which is the subject of the invention are distinguished by a h, luue heat stability and good resistance to impact with entalle.
The examples which follow illustrate the present invention without, however, limiting it.
