<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

A process for obtaining polyvinyl chloride shaped articles having improved thermal stability.
The present invention relates to a process for preparing polyvinyl chloride shaped articles having improved thermal stability. More particularly, it relates to a process for obtaining shaped articles, for example fila. Elements, fibers, yarns, films and the like, made from blends of vinyl chloride polymers having a high syndiotactic index and corresponding copolymers with cellulose esters.
It is known that shaped articles, and particularly filaments, fibers and fila consisting of conventional polyvinyl chloride obtained by polymerization at high temperatures

general ques useful from the textile point of view but that these products are hardly stable to heat and that they shrink strongly at temperatures immediately above 60-70 C. This disadvantage is very unfortunate because it does not allow to subject the yarns to all treatments requiring high temperatures such as dyeing, washing, decatising, calendering, drying, etc.
To avoid this drawback, various attempts have been made which have provided acceptable results from an industrial point of view but at an extremely high price.
Thus, for example, fibers obtained from copolymers of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride have better heat resistance than fibers obtained from chloride. usual polyvinyl.
Recently, attempts have been made to improve the thermal stability of polyvinyl chloride fibers by establishing crosslinks in them, but these methods have not yet been industrialized.
In recent years, fibers with excellent heat resistance have been obtained using as raw material polyvinyl chloride or its copolymers containing at least 85% vinyl chloride obtained by polymerization at a temperature of between -10 C and -60 C and in the presence of suitable catalysts active at these temperatures.
The vinyl chloride polymer obtained under these conditions is commonly referred to as high syndiotactic index (SI) polyvinyl chloride ".
The Applicant has described elsewhere methods for obtaining shaped articles and particularly fibers, filaments, etc., starting from the above-mentioned polymers.
It has now found, and this process is the subject of the present invention, that by adding to the spinning solution high syndiotactic index vinyl chloride polymers a sufficient amount of a cellulosic ester, it is possible
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to obtain, by extrusion, shaped objects, and particularly fibers and filaments having further improved dimensional stability to heat both in the dry state and in the wet state.
The high syndiotactic index vinyl chloride polymers which can be modified by addition of cellulosic esters and made into fibers, filaments, films, etc. according to the present invention include high syndiotactic index polyvinyl chloride and its copolymers and interpolymers suitable for forming shaped articles in which the polymer molecule contains at least 85% by weight of vinyl chloride.
The articles shaped according to the present invention can be obtained by extruding in a suitable coagulation bath, spinning solutions, in which the polyvinyl chloride and the cellulose ester are present in all proportions, the polymer of however, vinyl chloride is preferably present in a higher proportion.
Shaped articles and particularly fibers and filaments of particular interest and which have excellent dimensional stability do not contain more than 30% by weight of cellulosic ester, for example from 2 to 30% by weight approximately. eriviron, approximately.
The mixing of the high syndiotactic index polyvinyl chloride and the cellulosic ester can be carried out in various ways, for example by placing them in powder form in suitable powder mixing apparatuses, or in the dissolved state in dissolving both substances in the same solvent. In general, spinning solutions can be prepared by heating at 120-150 C for a period of between a few seconds and about 30 to 45 minutes, the raw materials first mixed in the desired proportions in a spinning solvent. appropriate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Suitable solvents are eyeloheranone, dimethylformiamide, dimethylacetamide and in general all solvents used for polyvinyl chloride having a high syndiotactic index.
The spinning solutions preferably contain
18 to 22% by weight of solids.
As stabilizers, any stabilizers employed in the preparation of high syndiotactic index polyvinyl chloride spinning solutions can be used, for example zinc, barium and cadmium phenates, organotin compounds such as mercaptides. dibutyltin, dibutyltin maleate, etc.
Shaped articles and particularly fibers, filaments, etc., can be prepared by spinning the solution thus obtained by the dry process or the wet process.
By the wet spinning process, the spinning solution is extruded into a suitable coagulation bath consisting of a ternary mixture of cyclohexanone, ethyl alcohol and water in proportions such that complete dissolution is obtained according to the diagram of miscibility of ingredients.
It is further necessary that the coagulation bath be maintained at temperatures below 70 ° C., and preferably between 40 and 55 ° C.
The material which has just been coagulated can be washed with aqueous liquid and stretched in boiling water to the ratio. longed for. This stretching can be carried out either in a single stage or in several stages, up to three or four.
The washing treatment can be carried out before or after the stretching operation or before and after the stretching operation.
The products are then subjected to a heat treatment under tension at temperatures between 200 and 230 ° C. for a few seconds.
The fibers obtained, although retaining mechanical properties similar to those of polyvinyl chloride fibers
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
with a high tactical syndic index, for example a toughness greater than 2.5 e / denier, an elongation at break between 25 and 60%, have a much greater stability of the dimensions either in the dry state or in the state wet.
The following table shows the percent shrinkage of different fibers obtained from high syndiotactic index vinyl chloride polymers with different amounts of cellulose acetate in boiling water, respectively, in boiling water. trichlorethylene at 40 C, in air at 140 C and in polyethylene glycol at 160 C
