 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  "CATALYST FOR THE PREPARATION OF POLYOLEFINS"
The present invention relates to catalysts obtained from metal oxides for the preparation of solid polyolefins, in particular polyethylene.

   It is known that it is possible to polymerize olefins, especially ethylene, at temperatures between 70 and 200 ° C and at pressures of 7 to 50 atmospheres by contacting them with a catalyst containing. chromium oxide (having a high content of hexavalent chromium) together with at least one of the following oxides: aluminum, silicon, thorium and zirconium.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The polymers obtained with these catalysts have a high melting point, high density and superior strength properties. These polymers are widely used in industry as well as in consumer goods. They allow the manufacture of insulators for conductors, anti-acid protections and coatings for containers, plates of various thicknesses, sheets, wires, etc.

   The present invention has in view the following objects: - an improved catalyst, - an improved polymerization process which makes it possible to obtain a high polymer productivity.

   The catalyst in accordance with the invention consists of a silica-alumina support in the ratio of 10 1,
The preparation of the silica-alumina support is illustrated in the following examples.

  Example 1
To prepare 1 kg of silica-alumina support is introduced into an alkali-resistant container fitted with a. intense stirring system 18 liters of 5% sodium silicate solution. The solution is then heated with slow stirring to a temperature of 55-60 C.

   After reaching the indicated temperature, the agibation is intensified and a mixture of 25.82 liters of 5% ammonium chloride solution and 2.35 liters of 34% aluminum sulfate solution is added. %. The addition of these solutions takes place over 3 to 4 hours, continuously maintaining efficient stirring and a temperature of 55-60 C.

   After addition of the ammonium chloride solution and the aluminum sulphate solution, the value

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 of the pH of the precipitate formed is adjusted to 6.5-7 by adding 2 n hydrochloric acid or a 10% ammonium hydroxide solution.

   The precipitate is left to mature for 1 hour.

  It is then filtered through a vacuum filter and washed with distilled water until the chloride ions and sulfate ions are removed.

   The washed precipitate is shaped by passing it through a nozzle having a diameter of 3-4 mm and then dried at 60-70 ° C. After drying it is crushed to a length of 1 to 2 mm.

   The dried support is calcined in a stream of air (200 liters of air / per liter of support / hour) for 5 hours at a temperature of 500 C.

   The product obtained has the following characteristics:

<tb> specific <SEP> surface <SEP> 438 <SEP> m2 / g
<tb>
<tb> specific <SEP> weight <SEP> apparent <SEP> 0.38 <SEP> g / cm3
<tb>
 Example 2
In an apparatus similar to that mentioned in Example 1, 20 liters of sodium silicate with a density of 1.25 (15% sodium silicate) are introduced onto which are poured rapidly while stirring 3.35 liters of solution of hydrochloric acid of density 1.135 in 19.25 liters of distilled water. The precipitate is formed in 20 to 30 seconds.

   Then a solution of 780 g of aluminum nitrate in 12.5 liters of distilled water is added, followed by stirring for one hour. Aluminum hydroxide with a density of d = 0.922 is added to pH - 9. The solution is then left to mature for 1 hour. The precipitate formed is washed, granulated and calcined as in Example 1.

   The polymerization catalyst can be prepared

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 d as in the following examples: Example 3
100 g of support, prepared as shown in Example 1 or 2, are introduced into 100 cm3 of a solution of
4% CrO3. After 15 minutes, the impregnated support is filtered. under vacuum and it is introduced for drying in an oven in which it is dried at 60-100 C.

   After drying, the catalyst is activated in a stream of air (200 liters of air / liter of catalyst / hour); for 3 to 8 hours, at a temperature of 300 to 500 C. It is necessary to dry the air so that its dew point is below -26 C.

   The catalyst is passed through special glass and stainless steel vessels, protecting it from contact with air.

   Example
100 g of support, prepared as indicated in Example 1 or 2, are introduced into 100 cm3 of a solution formed from 2% chromic anhydride and 2% ammonium molybdate. The concentration of chromic anhydride can vary between 1 and 4% and that of ammonium molybdate between 0.5 and 4%.

   The impregnated catalyst is filtered off, dried and activated as in Example 3.

   Example 5
100 g of catalyst support prepared as indicated in Examples 1 and 2, with 100 cm3 of solution formed from 3% chromic anhydride and 1.5% ammonium vanadate. Concentrations of 1% to 4% CrO3 and 1% to 4% ammonium vanadate can be used.

   This is followed by filtration, drying and activation of the catalyst under the conditions set out in Example 3.

   The catalyst prepared under the conditions indicated

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   ... as in Examples 3, 4 and 5 is used for the polymerization of alpha-olefins, for example ethylene. The polymerization with one of the catalysts mentioned above is carried out in accordance with the following examples:
Example 6
In a 10-liter autoclave fitted with a mechanical stirrer and heating means, is introduced
6 liters of solvent for the polymerization (n-paraffins and cycloparaffins with a maximum of 8 carbon atoms in the molecule), purified in a special way to completely remove water (less than 2 ppm) and oxygen (less than 2 ppm) of 4 ppm).

   Then 1.5 to 3 g of polymerization catalyst prepared as shown in Examples 3, 4 and 5 are introduced.

   The solvent (also containing the catalyst) is heated to a temperature between 120 and 200 ° C., preferably at 130 ° C.; while stirring is introduced purified ethylene of water (less than 2 ppm) and oxygen at a pressure between 10 and 50 atmospheres. In proportion to the pressure drop in the autoclave, new quantities of ethylene are introduced. After 2 to 10 hours of reaction, the autoclave is cooled to 30-40 C, then opened. The polymer formed is filtered, removing the solvent, and is dried at 80-85 ° C.

   The results obtained with the three types of catalyst are shown in the following table:
