., multiplet r . ,. ' '.'.... :::;,":':/ /:;:,'-'1,

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Apparatus for vertical distribution of copy paper ¯
EMI1.1
., multiplet r. ,. '' .'.... :::;, ": ': / /:;:,' - '1,
The present invention relates to the vertical dispensing of folded webs, and more especially to an apparatus and method for handling a web folded in an accordion fashion on itself at spaced points.
The invention is particularly suitable for handling multiple copy paper or manifold paper.
This paper is commonly used in commerce and comprises several excavated sheets which are combined with sheets of paper '

carbon interleaves. It weighs as a bandage having a considerable length, the formed bands being accordion-folded. It will be understood that this multiple-copy paper is extremely heavy and has a tendency to pack, so that its production is problematic. / transfer, in particular following the folding operation.
Until now, such a transfer required manual labor which corresponded to a low yield because of the need to work with relatively short lengths of multiple-copy paper, owing to its weight per unit length *
This problem is solved completely by the invention, which features a novel conveyor arrangement comprising web support plates, eliminating the need to lift and move multi-copy paper webs by hand. already folded. The combination used corresponds to an important aim of the invention.
Another object of the invention is to create a new method applicable to the technology of handling accordion-folded sheets, according to which plates are used to handle an accordion-folded sheet during its movement on a vertical path *
The invention is embodied in a vertical distribution apparatus for multiple copy paper and the like, comprising a frame, members provided on this frame for moving an accordion-folded strip along a generally vertical path, a fine direction conveyor provided on each side of this path, being able to move in a plane which is in principle vertical, each transporter being equipped with arms extending laterally, a transport device moving horizontally, placed at the lower part of this path ,
and a plurality of plates which can be inserted into the belt to separate it and support a stacked part of the belt, these plates resting on the arms of the conveyors.

Other aims and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description of the following description, given with reference to the appended drawings, given without limitation and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an apparatus according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is a partial side view of the apparatus visible in FIG. 1.
Figure 3 is a schematic representation of a downward moving web, substantially corresponding to that which is moved in the apparatus shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an end view taken looking along line 4-4 in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a partial elevational view taken from line 5-5 in Figure 4.
FIG. 6 is a plan view of a cutter bar advantageously used for the implementation of the invention.
Referring more specifically to Figure 2, it can be seen that the numeral 10 generally designates the frame of a machine for the production of strip-shaped material, for example multi-copy paper or basket. for "folds" folded in accordion as indicated above. This frame 10 carries, as shown, two folding rollers 11 and 12. This frame 10 carries, as shown, two folding rollers 11 and 12. The folding rollers are used to produce an accordion or Z-fold. which is clearly visible in figure 3. The strip 13 coming out of the folding rollers moves as indicated at 14 in a downward direction until a package 15 rests on a plate 16. Such a plate 16 is visible in plan in figure 6.
The apparatus according to the invention generally uses two or more support plates 16. For example, in Figure 3, the accordion path of the bar moving downward at 14 is interrupted by means of a second plate 16. ',
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which is inserted between neighboring pl @@@ 14 'and 14 ". It is seen that the cutting plate 16 can be provided with a sharp edge, which can have the old W-profile at 17, which allows the cutting of the blade. fold of the tape closing the line of weakness 8 'extending between the flats 14' and 14 ". In practice, the strip 13 is transversely perforated and is provided with lines forming the initiators of rupture, corresponding to the fold lines indicated at 18.
The introduction of the plate 16 'forms a small bundle of tape, as indicated by the numeral 15. Next, the plate 16' supports a compressed stack of accordion-folded material, which is moved downward on an arm indicated at 19. , as is best seen in FIG. 4. If the strip is not cut, it can be discharged on the conveyor 20 by resting for example on the plate 16 ''.
Once the strip has been cut as indicated at 18 'in Figure 3, the plate 16' or 16 "can be released from the vertical path without impeding the subsequent arrival of the strip of material 13. It is advantageous to perform this operation by means of a horizontal moving conveyor, generally designated by the reference 20 in FIG. 2.
Referring now to Figure 4, it can be seen that the conveyor, designated as a whole by the reference 20, comprises several idle rollers indicated at 21 (see also Figure 2), on which @@@ lays a band 22. This barrels 22 is driven by appropriate end rollers 23, dead on an extension 24 of the frame ...
In Figure 2, a second part of the frame, designated by the reference 25, is disposed below the frame 10 carrying the folding rollers 11 and 12. This part 25 of the frame is visible on a larger scale on the figure. figure 5; on this der @ era, the organs regulating the speed of movement of the various arms are also shown.
If we now refer to figure 4, we see @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
that @@ aque arm 19 is part of a fine direction chain 26, two such chains being provided, The chains 26 are driven around chain wheels 27 and 29 which, as shown, are rotatably mounted in part 25 of the frame. If we now refer to Figure 5, we see that the wheel. chain 27 is carried by a shaft 29 rotatably mounted in a bearing 30, this bearing being bolted to part 25 of the frame as shown in FIG. 5 ..
In use, the web of material moves intermittently downward in a vertical path, as shown in Figure 3; at the moment when the plate 16 comes to rest on the belt 22 of the conveyor, the space S 'formed between neighboring pitches 19 is greater than the normal spacing S. This additional spacing provides the certainty that it will not occur. produce interference between neighboring plates, even if the material is compressed between the plates.
The members ensure an intermittent advance of the chains (by a positive drive of the chain wheels 28) oom- mate a main drive shaft 31 (figures 4 and 5).
This shaft 31 is driven in rotation by the motor (not shown) associated with the rest of the apparatus, which drives the folding rollers 11 and 12, etc. The shaft 31 is equipped with an eccentric crank pin 32, in order to ensure an oscillating movement (see arrow 33 in figure 5) of the arm 34. The amplitude of the movement is determined by the position of the shaft. part 35 in the slot 36 after blocking. In this way, an oliquet effect is obtained for the unidirectional coupling 37 (FIG. 5) mounted on the transverse shaft 38 (FIG. 4). Further, a brake 39 is coupled to shaft 38 to prevent the weight of the folded and stacked strip from exceeding the force of the chain and chain wheel drive system 26-28.
The output conveyor 22 is also driven by a chain and chain wheel system 40.

Modifications can be made to the embodiment described, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
