Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

    'Procédé de préparation de 1,2-époxy-cyclooctène-(5) et produit obtenu".

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

    'Process for the preparation of 1,2-epoxy-cyclooctene- (5) and product obtained ".

   It is known that 1,2,5,6-diepoxy-cyclooctane can be obtained by reacting 1 mole of 1,5-cyclooctadiene with 2 moles of peracetic acid.

   However, the Applicant has discovered that the new 1,2-epoxy-cyclooctene- (5) could be obtained by reacting 1,5-cyclooctadiene with a percarboxylic acid, if appropriate, in solvents which are inert in the reaction, the 1,5-cyclooctadiene being used in an amount at least equimolar.

   Using 1,5-cyclooctadiene in excess of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 with percarboxylic acid, the yield of 1,2-epoxy-cyclooctene- (5) can be considerably improved. When, for example, 1.5 moles of 1,5-cyclooctadiene are used per 1 mole of peroarboxylic acid, the yield is considerably increased and the diene is almost selectively monoepoxidized. It is advantageous to use 1,5-cyclooctadiene in a molar excess of 30-200% by moles, preferably 50-100% by moles.

   As suitable peracids for oxygen transfer, there may be used, for example, perbenzolic acid, performic acid and advantageously peracetic acid.

   The reaction is suitably carried out in solvents which are inert in the reaction, for example ethyl acetate, preferably criatallizable acetic acid or acetone.

   For olefins, the rate of epoxidation generally depends on the polarity of the solvent. Thus the reaction, in many cases known, progresses more quickly in the very polar crystallizable acetic acid than in less polar aolvahts such as acetone. When using, in the process which is the subject of the invention, peracetic acid dissolved in acetone, one obtains, surprisingly,
 EMI2.1
 It does not have the same good results as with peracetl- disaoue acid in crystallizable acetic acid.

   It is advantageous to use peracetic acid dissolved in ketone, since it generally contains only a small amount of crystallicable acetic acid oz because, therefore, an acetylene of opoxide already. trained is essentially avoided.

   The reaction temperature is between 0 and
50 C, preferably between 5 and 10 C.

   The epoxidation is advantageously carried out in such a way that the 1,5-cyclooctadiene maintained at reaction temperature is added, slowly and with careful mixing, in a sol. - before, inert, for example one of the above solvents, of so-

 lution of percarboxylic acid, for example peracetic acid, in the same solvent, for example crystallizable acetic acid or acetone. By external cooling, the heat of reaction released is continuously removed.

  To complete the reaction which, towards its end, progresses more and more slowly, one can then leave the reaction mixture for 10-20 hours. It is, however, also possible to immediately separate the epoxide formed from the reaction mixture. By iodometric titration of the per-acid, the course of the reaction can easily be monitored.

   During the further processing, care must be taken to ensure that the carboxylic acid formed from the percarboxylic acid, for example crystallizable acetic acid, is carefully removed. For this purpose, the reaction mixture is advantageously diluted with a water-insoluble hydrocarbon, preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene or toluene, the carboxylic acid is removed by washing with water and with a solution of sodium carbonate, and then the dried solution is subjected to fractional distillation. Other head products consisting of the hy-

 Unreacted ayteay3ootadine, the. ". h." ......- 1,2-oxy-cyclooctene- (5) is obtained with a high degree of purity.

   1,2-Epoxy-cyclooctene- (5) is of particular interest, as it contains two different reactive groups, i.e. a CC double bond and an epoxy group, which give it a particular value as a component of copolymerization. The reaction according to the invention is surprising, since the two double bonds in 1,5-cycloctadiene are in the cis position and are unconjugated so that one would expect, during epoxidation with acids percarboxyliquea, to the formation of diepoxide.
