<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Fishing rod",
It is known to manufacture fishing rods in synthetic material composed of cotton, linen or glass threads aligned in parallel and embedded in a synthetic resin of the phenol-formalin type.
On the other hand, it has been proposed to replace the metal ferrules with which the female elements are fitted with wooden rods such as reed, bamboo, hickory or greenheart, for example, with organoplast shells with a density very close to that of these materials. and which are obtained by injection or compression of the moldable material.
The present invention relates to a fishing rod composed of several elements in one of the materials generally used, such as wood, metal alloys.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and glass strands coated in a synthetic resin of the phenol-formalin type for example, the constituent elements of which are removably connected two by two by interlocking with greasy friction of the end closest to the tip of the soion, of the element closest to the heel of the cane in a recess formed in the projecting end of a ferrule in a row of glass coated in a synthetic resin of the phenol-formalin type,
attached externally permanently by welding on the corresponding end of one conjugate rod element, the texture of the constituent material of this ferrule being such that it gives it both flexibility very close to that of the elements that it assembles and satisfactory burst strength
According to another feature of the invention, the ferrule is coated internally, at least, in its. part, constituting the wall of the recess intended to ensure the assembly, of a self-lubricating mixture of pure graphite (approximately. 40%) and synthetic resin with phenol-formaldehyde (approximately 60).
The presence of this coating will make it possible to achieve, by machining, a recess with the combined profile of the end considered of the rod element closest to the heel and whose lubricating properties will contribute to ensuring a satisfactory durable assembly.
The invention is further characterized by the use for the constitution of the ferrule of a material based on glass yarns, the texture of which will consist approximately of 60% of warp yarns arranged parallel to the axis of the rod and intended to ensure bending and by 40% weft son providing the shell with resistance to the bursting force resulting from the fitting.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
For information. it is reported that the material used for the constitution of the rod elements comprises, in general, approximately 90% warp threads for 10% weft threads.
The welding of the ferrule to the upper strand can be carried out either by a cold self-curing resin such as "ethoxylin", or by hot polymerization in an oven of a formo-phenolic resin.
The subject of the invention is also a preferred manufacturing process consisting in impregnating a fabric made of glass strands, generally 1.20 m long, with the chosen synthetic resin, then, over a width slightly greater than the internal contour of the fabric. ferrule of the self-lubricating mixture indicated above, to @ouler this fabric on a mandrel of suitable shape and, after welding, to cut into sections of suitable length.
The ferrule may be either cylindrical, which will require machining at the sides of the two strands, the conioicté of which varies, in general, between 3.5 and 5%, the end of the lower strand having, most often, a diameter exceeding 3 / 10mm approximately that of the conjugate end of the upper strand, ie conical. when the ferrule is conical of manufacture, it can be either manufactured exactly to the dimension of the upper strand, which will only require the machining of the chamber intended to receive the lower strand, or differ from the dimension of the upper strand and obligatorily give place in two machining.
In accordance with an alternative embodiment of the ferrule, use is made of combinations of other known materials, in particular called "compound", the glass-resin strand of which is in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
equivalent proportions, but the threads are not continuous, they are cut to lengths of 40 to 50 mm coated with synthetic resin, appearing loose in all directions.
However, this material, although having the same constituent elements, used as for the making of the shells defined above, cannot give sufficient resistance both to bending and to bursting.
It was therefore necessary, by a process of using this compound material, to ensure a suitable orientation of the threads, that is to say to orient about 50% of the threads by aligning them parallel to the axis to satisfy the bending. , the remainder of the threads remaining sufficient for resistance to bursting.
The process employed to obtain this result is characterized by preparing the raw material * compound, stretching it appropriately until a certain proportion of yarns is given the necessary orientation.
Two methods can be used: calendering, extrusion; the latter method, especially for small dimensions, has the drawback of breaking a not insignificant proportion of son which is especially detrimental to the flexural strength, which makes it necessary to increase the thicknesses and the preferred method is that of calendering.
Calendering is done in three operations called passes.
First pass. - On the calender, the cylinders of which are adjusted to a suitable spacing to obtain a sheet of 8mm thickness over a width of 200mm, one places a ball of raw material "compound" of 1kg to form a sheet of 350mm long approximately whose orientation of the son is initiated in the direction of the calendering, which is rolled on itself to make a strand in the direction of the calendering.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Second pass.- The rolls being adjusted for a thickness of 4mm, we place the sausage and we obtain a sheet of approximately 750mm long which is again rolled in the send of the calendering to obtain a sausage above,
Third pass.- The cylinders being adjusted for a thickness of imm give a sheet of three meters (which as we cut in length of 1m), which comprises the desired percentage of threads oriented in the direction of the length .
This is observed by carrying a small sample 5om long by 2cm wide which is cut from the sheet, with a muffle heated to around 600 which releases the resin by revealing the layers of oriented strands.
This control on the sample is necessary before continuing calendering and for each batch of material, because the three-pass process described above can be modified in the presence of the use of resins which do not always have the same degree of plsaticity and viscosity, which results in delaying or accelerating the orientation of the threads or sometimes, with old resins, very insufficient orientation.
The cylinder gap and the number of passes should be checked for each batch of material.
The sheets thus obtained, just like the fabric indicated above, are, after application of the self-lubricating lining, cut into strips corresponding to the dimensions of the ferrules, wound on a mandrel and, after welding, polymerized; the tube thus obtained is cut into sections of suitable length,
With certain resins used in the known compound, for example, phenol-formaldehyde, it is advantageous, in order to obtain the suitable homogeneity, to finish the shell in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a mold; for this, the tube obtained above is, before polymerization, cut as it is said, which gives a preform which is completed in the mold.
Another variant for the graphite-resin self-lubricating lining, can be the combination with one of the other resins known by their non-stick properties, such as for example, tetrafluoroethylene, which, impregnating one face of a very fine glass fabric, is glued inside the ferrule on the glass side.
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the accompanying drawing, which shows in enlarged axial section, the junction of two contiguous strands of an embodiment of a fishing rod according to the invention.
In this drawing, B1 represents the upper rod element and B2 the lower element, both tubular in the example and made of coated glass fila. the ferrule T of coated glass strands, coated internally with the self-lubricating mixture, is made to the cone of the upper strand B1 with which it is secured by the conical assembly òint J constituted, for example, by a cold self-polymerizing resin. It is internally rectified over the entire projecting part to produce a cylindrical fitting between the sections S1 and S2 of the lower strand B2 which is itself rectified for this purpose.
Between section
S2 and its end, it is ground to the cone of the lower strand. The lino cane thus produced behaves practically as would a one-piece cane, that is to say without the bending curve comprising stages or sudden changes in slope.
The invention is, of course, not limited to 1 '@@ cmple which has just been described but also applies,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
as has already been said above, with rods made using the usual materials such as wood, metal alloys and coated glass strands, the ferrule made of coated glass strands with a special texture which can be conical or cylindrical and can be rectified over all or part of its length, as well as the corresponding end of the strand or strands to be assembled.
