The polyvinyl ester block (s) which is united or which are each united to a polyoxyalkylene block may be an acetate, a propionate, a butyrate, a polyvinyl caprate or another polyvinyl ester or a mixed ester.
Any partially or fully hydrolyzed products can be obtained by hydrolysis or alcoholysis of any suitable polyvinyl ester. The usually preferred ester is polyvinyl acetate.
The terpolymers according to the invention are prepared by grafting the polyvinyl ester blocks onto polyoxyalkylene blocks which may or may not already be attached to a polysiloxane block. This can be done by heating a polyoxyalkylene polymer or a polysiloxane / polyoxyalkylene copolymer with a vinyl ester in the presence of a radical catalyst, such as a peroxide, such as a diacyl or diaroyl peroxide, in particular the peroxide. dibenzoyl or an azo compound, in particular ad'-azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, as described by Karls & Zimmermann (Makromoleculare Chemie 1962, 58,
75) .If the starting pollyoxyalkylene blocks are not already attached to a polysiloxane block,
this bond can be formed after grafting.
According to one of the processes for the production of the terpolymers according to the invention, a polysiloxane containing a certain proportion of hydrogen atoms bonded to silicon is reacted with a polyoxyalkylene / polyvinyl ester graft copolymer containing at least one hydroxyl radical which is preferably found in the polyoxyalkylene moiety. 67.5 parts of the oxyalkylated polyvinyl acetate grafted n-butanol thus obtained are diluted with 100 parts of toluene and the mixture is dried for 1 hour by azeotropic distillation with the solvent returning to the mixture.
0.5 part of stannous octoate is then added, then, over 15 minutes, 16 parts of a fluid polysiloxane with trimethylsilyl end-blocking radicals, the molecule of which has on average 3 CH3Si (H) O units and 15 (CH3) units. 2SiO. The mixture is heated under reflux until the evolution of the theoretical quantity of hydrogen, namely for 5 hours, after which the solvent is distilled off under a pressure of 15 mm to a final temperature of 100 ° C. to give 83 parts of a slightly cloudy straw colored oil having a viscosity of 4320 es at 25 C. The cloud point of a 20% solution of this product in distilled water is 35 C.
EXAMPLE 2. -
A polyether (200 parts) prepared by oxyalkylation of isooctanol using a wash of equal proportions by weight of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and having an average molecular weight of 1530 is stirred and heated to 80-S5 C in a nitrogen atmosphere during the addition, dropwise, over 30 minutes, of 22 parts of freshly distilled vinyl acetate containing in solution 0.6 part of dibenzoyl peroxide. The mixture is cooled to 20 ° C., after which all volatiles up to 100 ° C. under a pressure of 0.1 mm are removed by distillation.
There is thus obtained 218.9 parts of a clear and homogeneous colorless oil which consists of a polyether containing 8.6% of grafted poly (vinyl acetate) and having a viscosity of 280 es at 25 C and a n22 of the. , 4570.
