<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Il se caractérise par les moyens mis en oeuvre pris aussi bien dans leur ensemble que séparément, et plus particulièrement par la disposition des extrémités des mâchoires d'une part sur une came par l'intermédiaire de rouleaux ou patins ,et d'autre part par des coquilles circulaires rappelées par des ressorts , sur la douille d'un barillet muni d'une garniture élastique ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"SELF-CLAMPING AND SELF-CENTERING FLOATING SHOE BRAKE."
The brake systems used in automobile construction generally consist of a drum fixed to the hub of the wheel and on the internal face of which the jaws are applied, provided with linings with a high coefficient of friction.
These movable jaws are fixed to the axle by one end to the hub of a suitable part provided with a cam which ensures their opening when braking.
This device has multiple drawbacks; the ! greater difficulty arises from the fact that the drum is fixed by means of the wheel, while the jaws are mounted on the axle. It is then practically impossible to produce assemblies in which the center of the drum and that of the outer circle which surrounds the jaws are the same.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention consists in the production of a device making it possible to eliminate the defect indicated above. It gives the possibility when the jaws enter enoontaot with the drum to be centered no longer with respect to the axle, but on the contrary with respect to the drum.
It is characterized by the means used, taken both as a whole and separately, and more particularly by the arrangement of the ends of the jaws on the one hand on a cam by means of rollers or pads, and on the other hand by circular shells recalled by springs on the sleeve of a barrel provided with an elastic packing;
the elasticity of the barrel transforms the brake, which was at a fixed point, into a brake with floating, self-centering and self-tightening jaws whose position during braking depends on the brake drum, and no longer on the cam support
In the accompanying drawings given by way of nonlimiting example of one of the embodiments of the subject of the invention
Fig I represents figuratively the braking seen in section as a whole
Fig 2 shows an alternative embodiment of the same device
The brake consists of a drum I of known type, against which the jaws 2, 3 spaced apart by a cam 4 acting on the rollers 5, 6 or even pads are applied.
These jaws are provided at their other end with circular shells 7,8. Springs 9,
10 constantly draw the jaws 2, 3 towards each other.
The ends 11,12 of the jaws are supported on the cam by means of rollers 5,6 while the ends
13,14 are supported by their shell 7, b on the sleeve 15 of the

barrel 16 which comprises an elastic ring 17 that a central sleeve 18 allows to spin to 1'axle 19 by an axis 20 which passes through the plates 21, 22 bolted to a circular part 23 integral with the axle 19 @.
These plates serve as bearings 23, 24 for the shaft 25 integral with the oame 4
At rest the jaws are recalled by the springs 9, 10 and their friction shoes 26,27 are placed at a certain distance from the drum I,
According to the construotive variant shown in fig 2, the thrust of the jaw 2 is transmitted to the jaw 3 m no longer by the sleeve 15 of the barrel 16, but by a stop formed by a roller or ball 28 housed between the 29,30 heels provided on the ends 13, 14 of the jaws 2,3
The operation and advantages of this device can therefore be seen.
When, by an appropriate command, the cam 4 is rotated, the shoes 26,27 come into contact with the drum I and braking begins to occur.
If at this moment the center of the jaws 2, 3 does not coincide exactly with that of the drum 1, the end 13 of the driven jaw 2, pressing strongly on the bush 15 of the barrel 16, can move thanks to the elasticity of the ring 17. Thus the jaw is centered exactly in the drum 1 without being retained in a defective position by the plates 21,22.
On the other hand, as the resistance opposed by the Mastic ring 17 is very low, the sleeve 15 which receives the thrust of the jaw 2 is driven by the rotation of the drum.
I. It transmits its thrust to the jaw 3 which comes from arching / thrusting on the cam 4, producing the maximum effect
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Floating jaws 2,3,4 are thus produced
This brake device has the particularity of being a fixed point brake in the rest position, and a floating shoe brake in its working or active position.
It therefore constitutes a fixed point brake system when it is at rest,
and is transformed without any constructive complication into a self-centering and self-tightening floating shoe brake with very effective action because the pressure on the drums is perfectly distributed.
