<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention relates to a method and equipment for the reduction of uranyl nitrate solutions to uranium nitrate solutions, which are used, for example, as a reducing agent by the plants which reprocess irradiated nuclear fuels.
The reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuels is known. It consists of the following steps; @ 1. Removal of the casing by mechanical or chemical processing.
-2. Dissolving the core in nitric acid.
-3. The separation of the uranium, plutonium and fission products by a series of extractions using a selective extraction agent such as the tributyl phosphate.
In the operation mentioned under 3, the reduction of plutonium to the trivalent plutonium is required to obtain a separation of plutonium from uranium. Usually such reduction is obtained by means of ferrous salts, ferrous sulfamate in particular. It is clear that such a method results in the addition of elements not normally present in the method and thus cause difficulties and complications in the waste liquids. Therefore, studies have been made with the aim of replacing the ferrous ion with the uranium ion, which is also capable of effecting the desired reduction.
As an example, in the following table is given the average composition of a stock solution that can be used for the preparation of the solutions needed in the process in which uranium solutions are used as

When using a diaphragm, the method according to the invention is characterized by the fact that the cathode and anode liquids are separately cooled in a continuous manner. are circulated through their respective electrode compartments where they undergo the electrolysis partial and then removed from their respective compartments to be cooled again before further undergoing the electrolysis.
A further feature of the invention is that platinized titanium is used as the anode material.
This method is carried out by means of an equipment in which the electrolysis cell has a graphite cathode. An electrolysis cell divided into a cathode compartment and an anode compartment is by means of a diaphragm separating the cathode and anode liquids from each other, according to the invention, characterized in that the cathode forms at least one of the walls of the cathode compartment and that the anode forms at least one of the walls of the anode compartment, the diaphragm being located between the above walls.

1 liter of a solution 1 M in uranyl, 4 M in nitric acid and 0.3 M in hydrazine, is, as shown in Figure 1, by means of a circulation pump 1 and lines 2, 3, 4 through the cathode compartment 5 of a electrolysis cell 6, which consists of a graphite cathode 7, separated by means of a porous ceramic diaphragm 8 from a platinum-plated titanium anode 9.
The cathode 7 is electrically connected by means of copper lines 10 to the negative pole of an electricity source, the positive pole of which is connected to the anode 9 by means of copper lines 11.
The liquid A used to circulate through the anode compartment, by means of a pump 13 and lines 14, 15, and 16, consists of 1 liter of 4 M nitric acid. The cathode liquid C and the anode liquid A are circulated from cooled supply reservoirs 17 and 18, respectively.
Dimensions of the electrodes: 20 cm x 5 cm Distance between electrodes and diaphragm: 5 mm.
Power of the pumps: 15 liters / min.
After passing a current of 20 amperes for 2.7 hours, solutions of the following composition are obtained: cathode solution: 0.80 M in uranium (IV)

The same equipment is used and the procedure is as described in Example 1, with the exception that the anode nitric acid solution is replaced by a solution having the same composition as the uranyl nitrate solution used as the cathode liquid in Example 1, but without hydrazine.
Final solutions are obtained whose cathode liquid has the same composition as that of Example 1.
The anode liquid has the following composition:

used. This device contains the same parts as the electrolysis cell 6 as shown in Figure 1 but arranged differently.
As shown in Figure 2, the anode 9 forms the extreme wall of the electrolysis cell 6 and encloses the diaphragm 8, the anode compartment 12 being located in a space between anode and diaphragm. In turn, the diaphragm 8 encloses the graphite cathode 7, the cathode compartment 5 being located in a space between diaphragm and cathode. A ring 19 of insulating material insulates the graphite cathode 7 from the platinum-plated titanium anode 9. As in Figure 1, the letters A and C refer to the anode and the cathode liquids respectively and show how they circulate through the electrolysis cell.
The dimensions of the electrolysis cell according to the invention as shown in figure 2 are for example as follows: Height of the diaphragm: 900 mm Outside diameter of the diaphragm: 300 mm Distance between electrodes and diaphragm 5 mm Center line of the leads for the cathode liquid in the graphite cathode: 35 mm
2 x 1,000 L uranyl nitrate solutions having the composition as described in Example 4 are circulated through anode and cathode compartments. A direct current of 2,500 amperes is carried for 22 hours. The solutions obtained have the composition as described in Example 4.
EXAMPLE 7.-
The same experiment as described in Example 6 has been repeated with the equipment shown in Figure 3, which shows how electrolysis cells according to the invention can be connected in series.

mounted and electrically connected together by means of negative and positive leads, 20 and 21 respectively.
A current of 10,000 amperes is passed through for 5.5 hours. The solutions obtained have the composition as described in Example 6.
EXAMPLE 8.-
The same equipment as described in any of the foregoing experiments is used with a wide variety of uranyl solution compositions.
Limitations are imposed only by the nature of the chemical reactions taking place. Sufficient nitric acid, 2 moles per mole of uranyl reduced, should be present in the cathode liquid, plus the amount formed in the anode compartment that does not diffuse back to the cathode compartment and a minimum of nitric acid to prevent the hydrolysis of the uranyl (IV). and thus prevent the formation of UO2. The number of ampere hours required to reduce an amount of uranyl nitrate by 80% should be calculated. The integral efficiency of this method with described equipment is better than 80%.
EXAMPLE 9.
The experiments described in Example 8 are repeated but the minimum amount of nitric acid required to obtain the precipitation of UO2 is not present and the precipitation of UO2 is promoted by maintaining such low nitric acid concentrations.
