EMI2.1
Allongement conventionnel : ç c .o >"'0 ,c À. - À :: longueur de l'éprouvette au temps 1't" /,7= lorigueur initiale de Iprouvette 'Allongement rationnel = dE = j dÀ = log népérien (A E ) r A.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Method for determining the characteristics of a metal during a tensile test.
The present invention relates to a method for determining the characteristics of a metal. court? a tensile test.
Most of the usual mechanical characteristics informing the practitioner about the properties of a metallic material are taken from knowledge of the well-known diagram "tensile force - elongation" established for the material considered.
The information that can be obtained directly from this diagram, however, only informs the practitioner in an incomplete way about all the characteristics !. -
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mechanical ques of the material considered. This information is generally reduced to the knowledge of three quantities to know:
- the elastic limit expressed in kg / mm2 the breaking load expressed in kg / mm2 - the elongation at break expressed in% these three quantities being respectively defined as being - the working rate of the metal for which it remains after unloading , a permanent proportional elongation of 0.2% - the working rate of the metal for a load equal to the maximum load in the diagram and a section equal to the initial section - the elongation - total at break, expressed in percent of the initial total length.
To be able to make the best use of the metal material envisaged, the practitioner needs to know not only the characteristics given above, which are purely conventional, and have only a fairly fictitious meaning, but also and above all , the shrinkage coefficient of the metal and the laws of variation of the elongation and the actual work rate during the tensile test as well as the metal work hardening constants.
These indications are especially interesting in the case where we are dealing with metallic materials intended to undergo deep drawing operations. The value of the shrinkage coefficient and of the work hardening constants in fact characterizes in a way the ability of a metal sheet to successfully undergo such operations.
Before continuing with the considerations relating to the usual method of using the "traction-elongation" diagram, it is useful to recall below the definition of the physical quantities which will be used.
EMI2.1
Conventional elongation: ç c .o> "'0, c À. - À :: length of the test piece at time 1't" /, 7 = initial lorigor of I test piece' Rational elongation = dE = j dÀ = natural log ( AE) r A.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Shrinkage coefficient: r = #width # thickness # conventional contraction measured along the width of the specimen, when the conventional elongation reaches 20%.
# ep = conventional contraction calculated according to the thickness of the test piece.
Conventional rate of work #, = F @ F = tensile force applied to the test piece # @ # @ = section of the specimen at time t = @ Rational rate of work #r = F / # # = section of the test piece at time t #r and #r are in the field of platetic lengthening. linked by the relation #r = [alpha]. #n r [alpha] and n being coefficients! dimensionless called the "characteristic hardening coefficient" of a given metal.
There is another drawback inherent in the conventional use of the conventional "tension-elongation" diagram.
We know that in practice, when we want to check the qualities of a given metallic material, a tensile test is carried out on a test piece of this material which provides the usual "traction - elongation" diagram, the elongation removing. in fact the conventional elongation, ratios to the initial length of the test piece.
In order to be able to use the indications provided by this diagram, the practitioner must establish another one, namely the one which gives the rate of work as a function of the lengthening, this rate of work being in fact a fictitious characteristic since represents the quotient of the tensile force
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by the initial section of the test piece, which varies during the test.
If the user wishes to know if his metallic material is suitable for being subjected to deep drawing operations, he must himself determine the values of the hardening and shrinkage coefficients, which, given the logarithmic nature diagrams which then have to be drawn up can take quite a long time (eg of the order of half an hour).
It can be understood that under these conditions the method described above is considered to be too slow and is therefore not used.
The object of the present invention is precisely a method making it possible to remedy these drawbacks (insufficient information - slowness).
The method which is the subject of the present invention is essentially characterized in that during a tensile test, to which a test piece of a determined metallic material is subjected, the force applied to the material is continuously measured. test tube. its effective length as well as its transverse dimensions, in that these measurements are continuously transmitted to a suitably programmed electronic computer, which makes it possible to obtain continuously and almost instantaneously the values of the various physical quantities characterizing the metallic material , and their possible variation during said test.
Among these quantities, we can cite - the elastic limit of the material - the maximum stress rate of the material in the zone of the large elongations - the rational elongation corresponding to. this maximum rate - the value of n between 10% and 20% elongation.
- the shrinkage coefficient r at 20% elongation, that is to say in the zone of plastic elongations - the value of the rational elongation - the value of the shrinkage coefficient on the plastic phase. This can be calculated from the knowledge of al-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
elongation along the length and of the contraction along the width, because, the plastic phase of the elongation taking place at constant volume, knowledge of the thickness contraction is not necessary to perform the calculation of r - the work rate reported to the real section (i.e. #r)
- the length of the bearing of the "tension - elongation" curve
Knowledge of these quantities allows the immediate determination of the diagram giving #r as a function of #r. which makes possible the immediate calculation of the coefficients 0 (and n (indeed, the electronic calculator can instantly give the logarithmic values which one needs for the determination of this diagram)
The list indicated above is not exhaustive, the electronic calculator obviously being able to provide any mathematical combination linking the quantities which have been communicated to it.
In view of the foregoing, it is possible to realize the significant advantages of the method forming the subject of the present invention.
