 EMI5.5

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 EMI6.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 EXEMPLE 4:

 The salts of b1s ,, (p-chloropheno -.-, - acetic acid with inorganic or organic cations are new compounds and can be prepared by suitable methods.

   The compounds corresponding to the formula la
 EMI5.6
 in which R 1 represents an alkyl group containing from 3 to @ carbon atoms, are also new compounds.

   Their preparation process, described below, also forms part of the present invention.

   To prepare the compounds of formula Ia, or
 EMI5.7
 a) the b1s (p-chlorophenoxy) -acetic acid is reacted with an alcohol of formula II
R1OH (II) in which R1 has the meaning indicated above, or else b) compounds of formula III are reacted

 EMI6.1
 in which X represents chlorine or bromine, with an alcohol of formula II or an alcoholate of formula II a. R1OMe (IIa) in which R1 has the meaning given above and Me denotes an aloaline metal.

   An advantageous embodiment of procedure 'a) consists in reacting bis- (p-chlorophenoxy) -acetic acid with an alcohol of formula II at temperatures between 20 and d. 'boiling of the reaction mixture, but preferably at the boiling temperature, The esterification reaction is accelerated by the presence of a catalytic quantity of hydrogen ions which is brought to the reaction mixture by adding thereto, for example, arylsulphonic acids, such as benzenesulphonic acid, p-toluenesulphonic acid, etc. The reaction is advantageously carried out in an excess of alcohol of formula II, which makes the use of a other solvent.

   An advantageous way of carrying out the procedure b) consists in reacting oompounds of formula III with compounds of formula II or IIa in an inert organic solvent, for example in diethyl ether. While a solvent can very well be dispensed with for the reaction of compounds III with compounds II, it is generally preferable to use it for the reaction of compounds III with compounds IIa. The reaction according to the invention is preferably carried out at temperatures

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 tures between 20 and 30.

   It is also possible. to operate at higher temperatures, but then it is necessary to cool vigorously from the outside because of the strong evolution of heat produced by the reaction.

   In the case where the reaction is carried out with compounds of formula IIa, it is advisable to add to the reaction mixture, in order to fix the liberated hydrohalic acid, either an excess of compounds of formula IIa or bases. mineral, such as alkali metal carbonates, for example potassium carbonate, or organic, such as pyridine.

   If it is desired to prepare compounds of formula Ia in which R 1 denotes the tert-butyl group or the tert-pentyl group, it is particularly advantageous to have recourse to the reaction of compounds III with compounds IIa. As alkali compounds of formula IIa, potassium or sodium compounds are used in the process of the invention.

   The compounds of formula Ia, thus obtained, are then isolated from the reaction mixture, for example by evaporating the reaction mixture, dissolving in an appropriate organic solvent, such as chloroform or benzene, washing the solution thus obtained with water. and an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide and evaporation of the solution, and they are purified, for example by recrystallization.

   The starting body of formula III in which X denotes chlorine is known. That in which X denotes bromine can be obtained by treating bis- (p-chlorophenoxy) - acetic acid with a suitable bromination agent, such as thionyl bromide or phosphorus pentabromide, in an inert organic solvent, such as as diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran, at a temperature between 20 and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 boiling temperature of the reaction mixture. Bromination can also be carried out solvent-free when excess liquid bromination agent is used. It is advantageous to add, during the bromination, a catalytic amount of dimethylformamide.

   The following examples illustrate the preparation of the compounds. The temperatures are expressed therein in degrees centigrade and are given corrected, EXAMPLE 1: Isopropyl bis (p-chlorophenoxy) -acetate,

When the additive is complete, the mixture is stirred for a further 10 minutes, then evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. 200 ml of chloroform are added to the residue,
100 ml of a mixture of water and water and 100 ml of a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate.

   Then the organic phase is separated, washed with 75 ml of water, dried over magnesia sulfate and evaporated. After. recrystallizing the crude product held in cyclohexane and washing with de '. Ice petroleum ether gives the bis- (p-chlorophenoxy acetate of tert-butyl which melts at 92.

200 or dimethylacetamide and the resulting mixture was stirred at 20 for 1 hour. To the clear solution thus obtained is added
14.3 g of methyl dichloroacetate in 200 ml of dimethylacetamide and a catalytic amount of potassium iodide. The reaction mixture was stirred at 20 for 17 hours, then poured into 1 liter of ice water.

   After extraction with isopropyl ether, the organic phase is separated, washed with cold aqueous 1N sodium hydroxide solution, again separated and dried over magnesium sulfate. After evaporation of the solvent, a brown oil is obtained which crystallizes on standing. After crystallization of the residue from methanol, melting methyl bis- (p-chloro-phenoxy) -acetate is obtained.

 EXAMPLE 4:
Bis- (p-chlorophenoxy) -acetic acid,
950 g of methyl bis- (p-ohloro-phenoxy) -acetate, 350 g of potassium hydroxide and 1 liter of water are introduced into a flask.

   The reaction mixture is kept under reflux for 3.5 hours and the methanol is removed by distillation until the temperature reaches 80. Water is then added and then, at a temperature of 50, 500 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The reaction mixture is cooled to 15 and the oil which has settled and which constitutes the acid in the crude state is recovered. After crystallization from toluene, bis- (p-chlorophenoxy) -aoetic acid is obtained, melting at 142-144.
