<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
l'objet du brevet; à apiraler l'inclusion da résistance par des moyens connus; à recouvrir de caoutchouc l'enroulement en spirale;
L'objet de la présente invention ast un procédé de fabri- cation qui consiste essentiellement : à placer sur le tambour de de confection un tissu caoutchouté; à disposer sur le dit tissu dans les rainures du tambour des lattes de métal ou d'un autre matériau indéformable ayant une section appropriée;
à presser les : 'dites lattes contre le dit tissu (dont'les phases seront, au coure de la description du brevet, dénommées "conformation du tissu"; à spriraler l'inclusion de résistance par des moyens connus; extraire latéralement les lattes de métal ou d'un autre matériau indéformable; à recouvrir-de caoutchouc l'enroulement en spiralep;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Le procédé de fabrication en question va maintenant être mieux expliqué, de façon exemplative, en s'en référant aux dessins annexés dans lesquels t - la figure 1 représente une oourroie dentée faisant l'objet de l'invention; - la figure 2 représente la disposition des différents éléments dans une oourroie obtenue par les systèmes traditionnels; - la figure 3 illustre schématiquement en coupe le dispositif approprié pour la confection des courroies suivant l'invention, oomprenant le système pour spiraler l'inclue ion textile; .- la figure 4 illustre schématiquemeent la première phase du pro-- cédé de confection relative à la conformation du tissu;
- les figures 5 et 6 illustrent en particulier deux type ,de lat- tes nécessaires pour la conformation du tissu; - la figure 7 représente le détail d'une partie en coupe du moule et des matériaux après l'enroulement en spirale de l'in- olusion ; , la figure 8 représente le même détail que celui de la figure précédente après l'extraction des lattes métalliques et le revêtement de l'enroulement lui-même au moyen de caoutchouc;

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

IMPROVEMENT PATENT "Manufacturing process, rubber toothed belts, machine for implementing this process and belts thus obtained."
The present invention relates to an improvement to the process for manufacturing rubber transmission belts intended to engage on toothed pulleys, as described in Belgian patent No. 627.209 filed on January 16, 1963 by the same applicant, as well as the belt as well. obtained.
This improvement can also be applied to the production of V-belts, V-belts, speed-changers and the like.
As is known, the process according to the patent cited above consists of: placing on a suitable rotary toothed building drum a rubberized fabric, the profiles in rubber or having the shape of teeth; in pressing said profiles against said fabric by means of an appropriate device making, ausei,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the subject of the patent; inhaling the inclusion of resistance by known means; covering the spiral coil with rubber;
in vulcanizing the belt or the sleeve, still mounted on the building drum; and possibly cutting the sleeve removed from the building drum to the desired width for the belts,
The aim of the present invention is to improve the process described, which, on the one hand, makes it possible to introduce a notable.
simplification in the process itself, resulting in a strong reduction in the cost of manufacturing the belts, and which on the other hand keeps unchanged the advantages allowing the realization of perfectly regular toothed belts in the arrangement of the inclusion and in the shape of the teeth so that the belts obtained work perfectly on the toothed pulleys,
The object of the present invention is a manufacturing process which essentially consists of: placing a rubberized fabric on the building drum; in placing on said fabric in the grooves of the drum slats of metal or other undeformable material having a suitable section;
in pressing the: 'said slats against said fabric (the phases of which will, in the course of the description of the patent, be called "conformation of the fabric"; in spriraler the inclusion of resistance by known means; extracting the slats laterally from metal or other undeformable material; to cover the spiral winding with rubber;
in vulcanizing the belt or the sleeve still mounted on the drum and possibly cutting the sleeve removed from the drum to the desired width for the belts,
The manufacturing process which is the subject of the present improvement therefore differs from the process described in patent n ° 627.209 by the phase relating to the conformation of the fabric and the consequent elimination of the use of raw rubber profile material6 as well as by the arrangement of the fabric during the preparation phase.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The simplification introduced by the process in question therefore consists in the elimination of the prior extrusion of the rubber teeth oru in their exact shape as well as in the positioning of the raw material in the grooves. Both phases are particularly difficult. and are the cause of an oonsi .. deable waste of material: the extrusion of the teeth in their shape. and their exact weight which must be respected; the positioning of the raw material because of the obvious difficulties created by the need .. sity to dispose with the greatest precision an oru material and therefore easily deformable.
On the contrary, according to the present process, the shaping of the fabric is effected with extreme ease and precision, as will be shown below, and, in addition to the elimination of the aforesaid drawbacks and waste, it allows a substantial increase in the speed of connection of the belts,
The method forming the subject of the present invention is carried out by means of the same device which has been described and claimed in the patent No. 627.209 already cited.
It is formed by a rotating toothed building drum, which also serves as a mold for vuloanizing the toothed part of the belt, the length of which corresponds to the width of the belt or of a number of belts. smaller rolls (sleeve), by a flexible tape surrounding the lower part and the side parts of the drum at an angle greater than 180, preferably between 240 and 300, and in turn wound on return rollers which cause it to move integrally with the drum, the tape being tensioned by an appropriate means and acting on a roller while two other rollers have the function of pressing the tape against the drum.
The coil winding of the resistance inclusion can be exerted directly into the device for manufacturing the belts and in this case the device will be provided with a suitable spiral winding system of known type; or he per
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
To be handled separately by means of known and commonly used means in the production of trapezoidal belts.
The manufacturing process in question will now be better explained, by way of example, with reference to the appended drawings in which FIG. 1 represents a toothed belt forming the subject of the invention; - Figure 2 shows the arrangement of the various elements in a belt obtained by traditional systems; - Figure 3 illustrates schematically in section the device suitable for making belts according to the invention, oomprant the system for spiraling the textile included; .- Figure 4 illustrates schematically the first phase of the preparation process relating to the conformation of the fabric;
- Figures 5 and 6 illustrate in particular two types of slats necessary for the shaping of the fabric; FIG. 7 shows the detail of a part in section of the mold and of the materials after the spiral winding of the infusion; , Figure 8 shows the same detail as that of the previous figure after the extraction of the metal slats and the coating of the winding itself by means of rubber;
- 'Figure 9 still shows the same detail at the time of vulcanization,
In Figure 1 is particularly highlighted the arrangement of the different elements constituting the belt, in contrast to Figure 2 where is shown the arrangement of the different elements in a belt obtained by means of the terns currently in use, The belts are, as is known, formed by a flat upper part 1 in which the inclusion of resistance I is placed and by grooves 2 and teeth 3 suitable for adapting respectively to the teeth and to the grooves of the pulleys.
From the point of view of the structure the belts are formed by a resistance inclusion, generally constituted
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by a metal cord ;, indicated in figures 1 and 2 by the
EMI5.1
figure J; the reference represents the rubberized fabric which covers the belt on the toothed part.
The references 6, 7 and 8. represent the rubber constituting respectively the teeth, the upper part of the belt and the part situated between the inclusion 4 and the fabric 2,
By comparing figures 1 and 2 we see that the part
EMI5.2
rubber 8 does not exist in the belts obtained by means of the method forming the object of the present invention and therefore the position of the resistor inclusion 4, which is decisive for the purposes of an exact operation of the transmission ,
EMI5.3
is not bound to the underlying rubber 8 rubber which, as has been said,
not only is not easy to dose but can also determine displacements and irregularities of the inclusion of resistance during the vuloanisation phase
In the belts according to the present invention the resistance induction 1 rests directly, in the stitching and then vulcanization phase, on the fabric 5, which is practically undeformable, and which s' in turn presses, as will be explained below, on rigid reliefs of the mold. The inclusion of resistance is therefore always completely based on rigid elements and thus leaves its own position and regularity unchanged during

Now is explained the de'oonfection process carried out on the device of FIG. 4, which is the object of the present invention.

To make the function, shape and dimensions of the slats more simpler, it seems opportune to detail their characteristics.

As the slats should be easily pulled out laterally after spiral winding of the inclusion, as described later, the thickness of the slat 23 plus the thickness of the fabric @ 1 must be less than the thickness of the slat 23 plus the thickness of the fabric @ 1. depth of the groove of tooth 10 by a small amount 27, as seen in figure 7:
in other words this dimension is necessary to avoid that at the time of the spiral winding the injection presses on the slats instead of doing it on the rigid parts of the mold, finished
Once the placement in their respective seats of all the slats corresponding to the teeth, the drum 9 is rotated (figure 4) for a few turns so as to obtain a good tamponade of the fabric in the grooves of the teeth, - We then proceed to the spiral winding of the belt resistance inclusion, This operation can be carried out directly on the making machine or separately,
using the usual spiral winding system commonly employed in the production of V-belts.
In the first case, it is of course necessary for the previously described building device to be provided with a spiral system, for example of the type used for trapezoidal belts. In FIG. 3 is shown schematically the end part towards the drum. 9 .. of said system: the wire 20 constituting the inclusion is wound, at a determined tension, on two end rollers 18 and 19. The uniform and simultaneous movement of the rollers along a generator of the drum combined with the rotational movement of the drum determines the spiral winding of the inclusion.

In water where the spiral winding is carried out separately on a normal spiral winding apparatus for V-belts, the procedure is as described above. Before disassembling the drum 9.from the making device in order to mount it on the spiral winding device, it is necessary to prevent the slats, which on the device of FIG. 4 are pressed against the drum by the tape 12, can fall from the drum by the effect of their own weight.
To do this, a ligature is carried out, for example by spiraling at a wide pitch (3 to 5 cm) by means of a flexible and very thin Iras wire (0.2 to 0.3 mm thick); This ligature does not have to be specified and it can be carried out by holding the thread with one hand, rotating the drum and moving along the drum with the hand which holds the thread, thus obtaining a sort of ligature on the drum of the various slats and it is therefore possible to remove the drum 1 from the making device in order to mount it on the spiral winding apparatus. The inclusion is then spirally wound. 'It should be noted that the inclusion of resistance, coiled at an appropriate tension,
overlaps the soft, thin cotton ligature and compresses it so that there is no variation in the arrangement of the resistance inclusion of the belt,
In FIG. 7 we see in particular how the inclusion of resistance 1 was supported only on the rigid elements constituted by the fabric 21 and by the underlying reliefs 11 of the mold and is detached from the slats in the quantity f 27, adequately proportioned in thickness as mentioned above.
@@@@ the spiral winding of the inelusion 4 we proceeded to the extraction of the slats @ 3, the extraction of the slats is carried out by moving them along the groove of the tooth and by them rereading laterally. This op @@@ can be performed separately den by rent, or, if it. it acts of slats connected to them on the type of those shown in the figures

4, 5 and 6, by performing this operation more quickly on all the slats,
The belt is then coated with rubber 7 (FIG. 8).
In Fig. 8, showing a detail of the mold after coating with rubber 7, it is noted encoding the inclusion of resistor 4 which leans, as already noted, on the elements !? rigid lines 11 and how the fabric 21 is placed sufficiently adjacent to the contours of the mold, so that only a limited deformation of the fabric will suffice to bring it entirely into contact with the groove of the mold at each point and to obtain thus perfect stamping of the belt teeth,
Between the fabric 21 and the inclusion 4 we now note the space 28 which will then be,
respli pu .. 'rubber and which was previously occupied by the legs.
In the subsequent vulcanization phase (figure 9), carried out according to the methods and apparatus traditionally employed for trapezoidal belts, the covering rubber 7, by the effect of the pressure which is exerted on it in this phase, penetrates through the spaces 29, not occupied by the turns of the inclusion, fills the grooves 28 and pushes the tissue
21 against the walls 30 of the mold, so that one thus obtains the stamping of the teeth in their exact shape 31.
