Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

     La   figure 1 est, en coupe axiale partielle, une première forme de réalisation du moteur selon l'invention; la figure 2 est une coupe selon le plan II-II de la   figure 1   la figure 3 est une coupe selon le plan III-III de la figure   1 ;   les figures   4 à 6   sont trois coupes schématiques aelon le plan II-II de la figure   1,   illustrant le fonction- nement du moteur-des figures 1 à 3 ; les figures   7   à 9 sont trois coupes schématiques selon le plan III-III de la figure 1, illustrant le fonc- tionnement du moteur des figures 1 à 3 ; la figure   10   est, en coupe axiale partielle, une deuxième forme de réalisation du moteur selon l'invention;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

   The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine.

   In known internal combustion engines, the energy resulting from the combustion of a fuel mixture is used to subject a piston to an axial reciprocating movement in a cylinder. This reciprocating rectilinear movement of the piston is transformed, by a connecting rod-crank system, into a continuous rotary movement with a view to driving, for example, the wheels of a vehicle.

   These known engines can be classified into two categories. In a first category of engines, a combustible fluid and an oxidizing fluid are mixed in adequate proportions and the mixture thus obtained is introduced into a combustion chamber, in the vicinity of the piston, where it is compressed and ignited by a device. proper ignition.

   In a second category of engines, an oxidizing fluid is introduced into a combustion chamber in the vicinity of the piston and is compressed there. A combustible fluid is then introduced, under pressure, into this combustion chamber where it ignites under the action of the high temperature of the compressed oxidizing fluid.

   In general, in order to obtain high energy, - use is made of several sets of pistons and cylinders, each of these pistons being connected, by a connecting rod, to a common crankshaft.

   These known internal combustion engines have the serious drawback of requiring the transformation of a reciprocating rectilinear movement into a continuous rotary movement. This transformation requires the use, on the one hand, of a complex set of connecting rods and cranks and,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 on the other hand, a flywheel intended to regulate the rotary movement ... 11 results, on the one hand, in a complex and expensive construction of the motor, due in particular to the problem of balancing the moving traps and, on the other hand on the other hand, a significant loss in yield.

   The reciprocating movement of the pistons leads on the other hand, a serious probity of vibrations of the whole engine.

   In addition, the presence of a dead time between each reversal of the rectilinear movement of the pistons considerably limits the operating speed of the engine.

   Finally, when it comes to reaching high energies, it is necessary to couple a large number of pistons, which makes the engine particularly bulky. the motor according to the invention overcomes these drawbacks, in that it does away with the need to transform a reciprocating rectilinear movement into a continuous rotary movement.

   The motor according to the invention comprises a fixed cylindrical casing in which is mounted in a sealed manner an annular element which is wedged on a rotation shaft whose axis coincides with that of the cylindrical casing.

  This annular element has a first and a second transverse peripheral grooves in which at least a first and a second protrusion respectively integral with the cylindrical casing. These beads are in sealing contact respectively with the walls of these peripheral grooves so as to define therewith and the cylindrical casing, respectively a first and a second annular transverse chambers.

   The annular element also carries

 at least one predict and a second radial pallets which are mounted respectively in the first and in - the second peripheral grooves being in sealed contact respectively with the walls thereof and with the cylindrical casing and which are radially displaceable to pierce their passage respectively to the right of the aforementioned beads.

   In the engine according to the invention, 1 annular element, driven by a continuous rotary movement, replaces the set of reciprocating rectilinear motion pistons of known engines.

   The adjustment of the opening of the aforesaid valves, on the one hand, and the angular distance between the pallets of the first set of pallets and those of the second set of pallets on the other hand are chosen so that when of the opening of a valve, a pallet of the first set of pallets is situated between the aforementioned two orifices of the chamber of the first set of chambers, in communication with this valve, and a pallet of the second set of pallets is situated between the two aforementioned openings of the chamber of the second set of chambers, in communication with said valve.

   The motor according to the invention is essentially rotary and continuous in operation. It does not have connecting rods or cranks. It does not require the use of a flywheel, since it is possible to distribute the vanes and the transverse annular chambers evenly around the rotation shaft. Thus, the rotation shaft and the annular element constitute a rotating, balanced assembly.

   The motor according to the invention is capable of reaching high rotational speeds without risk of significant vibrations. Its efficiency is high and its size is reduced
In order to increase the energy available to: the rotation shaft, it is possible to wedge on this shaft several identical annular elements mounted in a cammune cylindrical casing. Possibly, for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 For construction reasons, it may be advantageous to mount each annular element in a separate cylindrical envelope.

   According to one feature of the invention, in the case where the first set of engine chambers is supplied with an oxidizing fluid and where the chambers of the second set of chambers are provided with an injector of a combustible fluid, the element The aforementioned annular has a third transverse peripheral groove in which there forms a third set of beads which are equal in number to the number of beads of the aforesaid first set of beads, which are integral with the cylindrical casing and which are in sealed contact with the walls of this third peripheral groove so as to delimit therewith and the cylindrical casing, a third set of successive transverse annular chambers.

   The annular element also carries a third set of radial paddles which are equal in number to the number of paddles of the aforementioned first set of paddles, which are mounted in the third peripheral groove while being in sealed contact with the walls of the latter with the cylindrical casing and which are movable radially to allow their passage in line with the beads of the third set of beads.

   Each of the chambers of this third set of chambers has, in the upstream part, an inlet pipe for the combustible fluid and in the downstream part, an outlet pipe for this combustible fluid delivered by a pallet of the third set of vanes.
This discharge duct est.in communication, via a valve or the like, with one of the aforementioned injectors, adjusting the opening of the aforementioned valves and valves, on the one hand, and the angular difference between the vanes of the first,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 of the second and third sets of pallets, on the other hand, are chosen so that, on the one hand, when a valve is closed, the valve in communication with the chamber connected to this valve s 'opens and that, on the other hand,

     to this mement a pallet of the third set of pallets is located between the aforementioned two conduits of the chamber of the third set of tubes, in communication with said valve.

   In the engine according to the invention, the number of paddles of each of the sets of paddles is advantageously at least one unit greater than the number of beads of each of the sets of beads. Thus, during its rotation, the annular element is constantly subjected to the energy of expansion of the combustion gases in at least one chamber of the second set of annular chambers.

   Features and details of the invention will become apparent from the following description of the appended figures which show only a few embodiments of the engine according to the invention by way of example.

     FIG. 1 is, in partial axial section, a first embodiment of the motor according to the invention; Figure 2 is a section along the plane II-II of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the plane III-III of Figure 1; Figures 4 to 6 are three schematic sections on the plane II-II of Figure 1, illustrating the operation of the engine of Figures 1 to 3; FIGS. 7 to 9 are three schematic sections on the plane III-III of FIG. 1, illustrating the operation of the engine of FIGS. 1 to 3; FIG. 10 is, in partial axial section, a second embodiment of the motor according to the invention;

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 FIGS. 11, 12 and 13 are respectively sections according to the plans XI-XI, XII-XII and XIII-XIII of FIG. 10.

   In these figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.

   The motor shown in Figures 1 to 3 essentially comprises a fixed cylindrical casing 1 which is crossed axially by a rotation shaft 2. An annular element 3 is wedged on this shaft 2 and is mounted, in a sealed manner, in the cylindrical casing 1. This annular element
3 has two transverse peripheral grooves 4 and 5.

   The groove 4 is divided into two consecutive annular chambers 6 and 7 by two beads 8 and 9 integral with the cylindrical casing 1, diametrically opposed and in contact, in a sealed manner, with the walls of said groove 4. Likewise, the groove 5 is divided into two consecutive annular chambers 10 and 11 by two beads
12 and 13 integral with the cylindrical casing 1, diametrically opposed and in contact with the walls of said groove
5. The beads 8 and 12 on the one hand, 9 and 13 on the other hand, are aligned along the axis of the rotation shaft 2
The annular element 3 also carries a first set of three radial vanes 14, 15 and 16 mounted in the groove 4 while being in sealing contact with the walls thereof and with the cylindrical casing 1.

   These pallets 14, 15 and 16 are radially displaceable to allow their passage in line with the beads 8 and 9. To this end, they pass radially through the annular element 3 and bear against a cylindrical ring. fixed 17 coaxially crossed by the shaft 2. This ring 17 is, for example, integral with the cylindrical casing 1.

  This cylindrical ring 17 has, opposite the beads 8 and 9, depressions 18 and 19. allowing a displacement

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 radial of the pallets 14, 15 and 16 opposite these beads
8 and 9.

   Thus, during the rotation of the shaft 2 and of the annular element 3, the vanes 14, 15 and 16 are kept constantly against the casing 1 or the beads 8 and 9, by this cylindrical ring 17.

   The annular element 3 also carries a second set of three radial vanes 20, 21 and
22 mounted in the groove 5 in sealing contact with the walls thereof and with the cylindrical casing 1.

   These pallets 20, 21 and 22 are also radially displaceable to allow their passage in line with the beads 12 and 13. For this purpose, they pass radially through the annular element 3 and bear against a fixed cylindrical ring 23 similar to the ring 17 and crossed coaxially by shaft 2.

   Pallets 14, 15 and 16, on the one hand, 20, 21 and
22, on the other hand, are advantageously provided with elastic rings 44 reinforcing the seal between these vanes and, respectively, the groove 4, on the one hand, and the groove 5, on the other hand.

   In order to ensure the balancing of the annular element 3, the vanes 14, 15 and 16, on the one hand, 20, 21 and 22, on the other hand, form an angle of 120 degrees between them.

   The chambers 6 and 7 each have, in the upstream part, an inlet orifice 24 for a mixture of combustible and oxidizing fluids. These orifices 24 are for example in communication with a conventional carburetor of a vehicle equipped with this engine.

   In the figures, the upstream and downstream parts of chambers 6, 7, 10 and 11 are determined with respect to the direction of rotation of the annular element 3 defined by the arrow X.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   The chambers 6 and 7 also each have, in the downstream part, an outlet 25 of the mixture introduced through the orifice 24 and discharged by a pallet such as 14
Each of the chambers 10 and 11 has, in the upstream part, an inlet opening 26 for the aforementioned mixture. The opening 26 of the chamber 10 is in communication with the orifice 25 of the chamber 7 via a valve 27; Likewise, the opening 26 of the chamber 11 is in communication with the orifice 25 of the chamber 6 via a valve 28.

   Each of the chambers 10 and 11 is furthermore provided with an exhaust member 29 for the aforesaid combustible mixture and with an opening 30 for discharging the combustion gases.

   Thus, during the rotation of the annular element
3 in the direction of arrow X, a mixture of combustible and oxidizing fluids is drawn into chamber 7 via the orifice
24 of this chamber, by the pallet 14 (Figure 4). The maximum volume of mixture introduced into chamber 7 is that comprised between two successive vanes 14 and 16 in this chamber (FIG. 5).

   After the vane 14 has passed beyond the orifice 25 of the chamber 7, the mixture is compressed in the downstream part of this chamber by the vane 16, the valve 27 being closed (FIG. 6). When the volume of this downstream part is sufficiently small (for example, in the case of a hydrocarbon mixture usually used for fueling motor vehicle engines, when this volume is substantially equal to one tenth of the aforesaid maximum volume between the two successive vanes 14 and 16), the valve 27 is open and the mixture is discharged, under pressure, by the vane 16 into the chamber 10, upstream

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 of the pallet 22 (figure 7 The position of the pallets
14, 15 and 16 compared to pallets 20,

     21 and 22 on the one hand and the respective dimensions of the grooves 4 and 5 on the other hand, are advantageously chosen so that when opening the valve 27 the volume of the space of the chamber 10, in upstream of the pallet 22 is semi-equal to the volume of the aforesaid space of the downstream part of the chamber 7, downstream of the pallet 16. When the selange has been completely discharged from the chamber 7 into the chamber 10,

     the valve 27 is closed and the mixture is ignited in the chamber 10 by the ignition device 29 of this chamber, the paddle 22 is then possessed under the actioi of the glowing gases resulting from the rapid combustion of the mixture (figure 8) and these oral gases are then exhausted to the atmosphere through the vane 21 after the vane 22 has passed past the exhaust opening 30 of the chamber.
10.

   In practice, to take into account the high speed of rotation of the annular element 3, it may be useful to cause the mixture to ignite a little with the closing of the valve 27, so as to reach a maximum pressure upstream of pallet 22.

   It is evident that phenomena similar to those which have just been described for the annuli] chambers; 7 and 10 take place in rooms 6 and 11 respectively.

   Each of the vanes 14, 15 and 16 plays a similar role successively in the chambers 6 and 7, namely sucking the mixture of combustible and oxidizing fluids in these chambers through the orifices 24, compressing it in the downstream side of these chambers and then pushing it back. under pressure respectively in chambers 11 and 10, via orifice 25, valves 28 and 27 and orifices 26. Simultaneously,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 each of these pallets 14, 15 and 16 sucks in the mixture from the side of its upstream face and delivers, on the side of its downstream face, the mixture sucked by the previous pallet.

   Likewise, each of the pallets 20, 21 and 22 plays a similar role successively in the chambers 10 and 11, to --avoir; drive the annular element 3 in the direction of arrow X, under the action of the thrust of the pressurized gases resulting from the combustion of the mixture and discharge the burnt gases towards the atmosphere, via the orifices'
30. Simultaneously, each of the vanes 20, 21 and 22 is subjected to the action of the thrust developed by the combustion of the mixture on its upstream face and discharges the burnt gases on the side of its downstream face.

     By turning in the direction of arrow X, the annular element 3 drives the shaft 2 to which the wheels of a vehicle are, for example, coupled.

   A cooling system (not shown) for the walls of the cylindrical casing 1 is provided. This cooling is, for example, provided by the circulation of a refrigerant fluid such as water or by forced ventilation.

   The cooling of the annular element 3 and of the vanes 14, 15, 16, 20, 21 and 22 is advantageously ensured, for example, by a circulation of pressurized oil between the annular element 3, the shaft 2 and the rings 17 and 23.

   This oil also ensures the lubrication of the vanes sliding through the annular element 3 and sliding on the rings 17 and 23, as well as the sealing between these vanes and this annular element 3.

   According to a variant (not shown) of this first embodiment, the cylindrical casing carries only two beads which protrude respectively in the grooves 4 and 5; these are, for example, the beads

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

8 and 12 of Figures 2 and 3. The annular element carries only four vanes which are two by two diametrically opposed and which are mounted two by two in the grooves 4 and 5. The casing 1 has a single inlet orifice of the mixture in the groove 4 and a single orifice for discharging this mixture out of this groove 4. These two orifices are provided in the single bead fa:! s protruding into this groove.

   Likewise, the casing 1 has an opening for admitting the mixture into the throat 5 which is in conjunction with the aforesaid single discharge orifice, via a valve. It also has a single element for igniting the mixture and a single opening for discharging the burnt gases.

   These two openings are provided in the single bead protruding into the groove 5. The annular element may optionally carry only two radial vanes (for example the vanes 15 and 20) which are mounted respectively in the grooves 4 and 5. In order to ensure the balancing of the annular element 3, it is then necessary to provide therein balancing masses for these pallets.

   According to a second embodiment shown in Figures 10, 11 and 12, the engine according to the invention comprises an annular element 3 which has three peripheral grooves 4, 5 and 31. Each of the grooves 4 and 5 is divided, as in case of the motor of figures 1,2 and
3, in two consecutive annular chambers (respectively the chambers 6 and 7, for the groove 4 and the chambers 10 and 11 for the groove 5) by beads 8, 9, 12 and 13 From a similar Lair the groove 31 is divided in two successive annular chambers 52 and 33 by two beads 34 and 35 integral with the cylindrical casing 1, diametrically opposed and in contact in a sealed manner,

   with the walls of this gorge 31

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

The annular element 3 carries, 'in addition, a third set of three radial vanes 36, 37 and 38. These three vanes are mounted in the groove 31 being in sealing contact with the walls thereof and with the 'cylindrical shell' 1 ..

   These three pallets form an angle of
120 degrees. They pass radially through the annular element
3 and bear against a fixed cylindrical ring 45 passes coaxially through the shaft 2. This ring 45 has, opposite the deu. the aforementioned beads 34 and 35 of the groove 31, depressions allowing a racial displacement of these paddles in front of these beads, in the groove 31.

   Thus, during the rotation of the shaft 2 and of the annular element
3, these three pallets 36, 37 and 38 are kept constantly in the groove 31, against the cylindrical casing 1 or these two beads 34 and 35. the three pallets 36, 37 and 38 are advantageously provided with tongues elastic bands 44 reinforcing the seal between them and the walls of the groove 31 -
The two consecutive annular chambers 32 and 33 delimited in the groove 31 are similar to the chambers 6 and 7 delimited in the groove 4. Each of these two chambers has, in the upstream part, an inlet duct 39 of a fluid. fuel and, in the downstream part, an evacuation conduit 40 of this combustible fluid.

   The discharge duct 40 from the chamber 32 is in communication, via a valve 41, with an injector 42 opening into the upstream part of the chamber 1'1. In an analogous manner, the discharge duct 40 of the chamber 33 is in communication, via a valve 43, with another injector 42 opening into the upstream part of the chamber 10.

     On the other hand, in the engine of figures 10, 11, 12 and 13, the inlet ducts 2 ° of the chambers 6 and 7

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 an oxidizing fluid For this purpose, they are, for example in communication with the atmosphere with the possible interposition of a filter intended to retain the dust contained in the atmospheric air
The chambers 6 and '7 are on the other hand, in communication, downstream, respectively with the upstream parts of the chambers 11 and 10, via the discharge ports 25, the valves. 28 and 27 and the inlet openings. 26.

   The adjustment of the opening of the valves 27 and 28 and of the valves 41 and 43 is chosen so that at the time of the closing of the valve 27 respectively of the valve
28 -, the valve 43 respectively the valve 41 - opens.

   Thus, during the rotation of the annular element
3, the oxidizing fluid (in this case, air) is sucked into the upstream part of the chambers 6 and 7, then is compressed in the downstream part of these chambers and is then discharged into the upstream part of the chambers 10 and 11.

   Simultaneously, the combustible fluid is sucked into the upstream part of the chambers 32 and 33, then is compressed in the downstream part of these chambers and is then injected under pressure into the aforementioned oxidizing fluid located under pressure in the upstream part of the chambers 10 and 11.

  As it is injected into chambers 10 and. 11, the combustible fluid burns in contact with the compressed high temperature fluid -comburant. The vanes 20, 21 and 22 are thus pushed back in the direction of arrow X under the action of the gases resulting from the combustion of the combustible fluid.

   In practice, take into account the high speed of rotation of the annular element 3, it may be of interest that the valves 41 t't 43 are opened a little before the closing of the bursts 28 and 27.
