Abstract
Impregnating a graphite object with an impregnant having coefficient of thermal expansion less than 10-5 degrees C-1, composed principally of a mixture of 65% SiO2 and at least one of Al2O3, MgO, and CaO. The graphite object is placed in a crucible closed by a piston; the impregnant is added; the crucible is heated to render the impregnant fluid; and a pressure of 5 - 150 kg/cm2 is applied by the piston. The graphite is used as sheathing for nuclear fuel elements.
