Description

(c) un agent porogène ;

<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=30.1>

<EMI ID=36.1>

<EMI ID=37.1>

<EMI ID=38.1>

<EMI ID=39.1>

<EMI ID=72.1>

<EMI ID=73.1>

<EMI ID=74.1>

<EMI ID=75.1>

<EMI ID=76.1>

Les supports auxquels on peut lier ou coller les mousses de polyuréthanne souples conformes à l'invention sont constitués de polyuréthannes, de papier, de papier kraft, de cuir, de peaux, de coton, de lin, de soie, de chanvre, de jute, de laine, de toile, de polyamides, de polyesters, de rayonne, d'acétate de rayonne, de polymères du styrène et de polymères du chlorure de vinyle. Comme supports possibles, on peut encore citer des métaux contenant du fer et exempts de fer, des matériaux contenant du verre, y compris-le verre, les matières céramiques, les faïences et la porcelaine ;

des supports cellulosiques, y compris le bois, le contreplaqué, les joncs , le bambou ou les roseaux ;

des matières contenant des protéines, y compris des gélatines ;

des fibres naturelles ;

comme aussi des matériaux de construction, y compris les briques, le granite, le grès, le gypse, les dalles, les plaques murales et les blocs de ciment ou de béton ;

<EMI ID=77.1>

<EMI ID=78.1>

<EMI ID=80.1>

On répète quelques fois

On exprime

<EMI ID=156.1>

invention sont excellentes en fonction des normes classiques, ce qui est démontré par les résultats de la résistance du collage et par les résultats obtenus avec les échantillons sujets à une déchirure de la mousse ;

ne porte nullement préjudice aux excellents résultats, obtenus avec les mousses de polyétherpolyol polyuréthanne fabriquées à partir d'un mélange conforme à l'invention ;

une mousse de polyester(témoin U), étant donné que cette dernière était déjà totalement décomposée ou désagrégée après 3 cycles de vieillissement de 5 heures dans un environnement humide et qu'elle présentait alors une résistance du collage de 0 ;

 Foam making blend

<EMI ID = 1.1> The present invention relates to a mixture intended for the preparation of a flexible or flexible polyetherpolyurethane foam which can be bonded to

a thermal support, containing:
(a) a polyisocyanate component with at least two isocyanate groups per molecule,
(b) at least one polyether polyol component having a molecular weight of at least 2000 and containing, on average, at least two hydroxyl groups per molecule,
(c) a blowing agent;
(d) a catalyst and
(e) a surfactant or surfactant.

It is known that urethane bonds can be formed in polyurethanes by exothermic reaction between a polyfunctional isocyanate and a compound containing polyfunctional active hydrogen,

in the presence of a catalyst. According to the one-step process.

<EMI ID = 2.1>

polymer foams, the reaction between the polyisocyanate and the compound containing the active hydrogen is controlled

using a catalytic system and a surfactant.

Suitable active hydrogen-containing compounds include, as is well known, polyetherpolyols and polyesterpolyols. It is, however, just as well known that if one can perfectly obtain

flexible polyurethane foams with outstanding bonding or flame coating properties

from polyesterpolyols, these foams do not

cannot be obtained from polyetherpolyols. Unfortunately, the polyesterpolyols used are significantly more expensive than the polyetherpolyols. An additional component, namely an adhesive, is thus used when bonding polyurethane foams which originate from polyetherpolyols. The expenses and additional costs resulting from the implementation of this process appear

obviously.

Solutions have been proposed to solve this problem which, in turn, pose other problems, so that improvements are always sought. and improvements to the process in question. In US Pat. No. 3,205,120 the manufacture of polyether-based polyurethane foams is described. polyols, which are suitable for the manufacture of laminated materials by hot-gluing, a manufacturing process in which the commercial reaction mixture for obtaining a flexible polyurethane foam based on polyether polyol contains a small amount of a polyol having molecular weight from 200 to 1500. The preferred low molecular weight polyol herein is tris- (dipropylene glycol) phosphite.

 Other low molecular weight polyols disclosed in the aforementioned patent include adducts of ethylene oxide and polyhydroxyalkanes, phosphorus-containing acids and the like. It was later found that processing difficulties were encountered during the manufacture of polyetherpolyurethane foams according to the aforementioned patent, caused by

however, is not common in the manufacture of polyurethane foams. In addition, the polyurethane foams thus obtained exhibit high permanent set values under compression, which are unacceptable for most of the applications envisaged.

British Patent No. 1,360,131 describes the use of distilled toluylene diisocyanate which does not contain polymeric isocyanates. The advantage of. this process

is that isocyanates of this nature possess constant activity which facilitates their processing. However, the technical literature does not agree

with the invention which is based on the characteristic that polyurethane foams which are prepared from

<EMI ID = 8.1>

<EMI ID = 9.1> also do not contain polyetherpolyols which are graft polymers of styrene and acrylonitrile on a backbone of an addition polymer of glycerin and alkylene oxide.

We have now discovered that it is possible to. preparing a polyetherpolyurethane foam capable of being linked to a support without the aforementioned drawbacks "

The polyisocyanates which take part in the reaction are known. Suitable polyisocyanates correspond, for example, to the following general formula:

<EMI ID = 30.1>

where i has an average value of at least 2

and in most cases less than 6 and Q represents an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic group which consists of an unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical

or by a substituted hydrocarbon radical, for example by halogen atoms or alkoxy groups. Thus, Q can represent, for example, an alkylene, cycloalkylene, arylene, alkyl-cycloalkylene, alkarylene or aralkylene radical, as well as also the abovementioned radicals substituted by halogen atoms or alkoxy groups. As typical examples of polyisocyanates which are suitable for the preparation of polyurethanes, the following compounds may be mentioned:

1,6-hexamethylene dilsocyanate, 1,4-tetramethylene diisocyanate, 1-methylcyclohexane 2,4-diisocyanate, <EMI ID = 31.1>

such as 4-methoxy-1,4-phenylene diisocyanate,

triphenylmethane and other organic polyisocyanates well known to those skilled in the art of manufacturing polyurethanes, as also mixtures of these compounds. Of these kinds of isocyanates, those with aromatic rings are generally preferred.

<EMI ID = 34.1>

Polymeric isocyanates, comprising units of the following formula:

in which R represents a hydrogen atom and / or a lower alkyl group and j has an average value

<EMI ID = 36.1>

rence, a methyl group and j preferably has an average value which ranges from 2.1 to 3.0. As particularly suitable polyisocyanates of this type, mention may be made of the polyphenylmethylene polyisocyanates prepared by the phosgenation of a polyamine obtained by an acid-catalyzed condensation of aniline with formaldehyde. These products are low viscosity liquids (50 to 500 cP at 25 [deg.] C) with average isocyanate functionalities which vary from 2.25 to 3.2 and more, depending on the molar ratio of aniline to formaldehyde used. implemented.

Also suitable are combinations of polymeric diisocyanates and isocyanates which contain more than two isocyanate groups per molecule. Such combinations

consist, for example, of a mixture of diisocyanate

<EMI ID = 37.1>

of the aforementioned polyphenylmethylene polyisocyanates and / or of polymeric toluylene diisocyanates, obtained from

residues from the manufacture of diisocyanates.

The polyether polyol and the organic polyisocyanate together most frequently constitute the major weight fraction of the reaction mixture. Polyisocyanate and polyether polyol are usually used.

in relative proportions such as the ratio of equivalents of NCO groups to total active hydrogens (from

polyether polyol and optionally water) varies from

0.8 to 1.5, preferably 1.0 to 1.15.

This ratio is known as the isocyanate number and it is often indicated as a percentage in the form of a stoichiometric amount of polyisocyanate.

which is necessary for the reaction with the total active hydrogens. The isocyanate index can vary from 80 to 150%,

preferably 100 to 115%.

In the mixture according to the present invention, one or more polyetherpolyols are reacted with

polyisocyanate with creation of the urethane bond. Polyols have on average at least two, mostly less than 6, hydroxyl groups per molecule and consist of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, as possibly also phosphorus, halogens and / or nitrogen . The polyols in question have a molecular weight

average of at least 2000.

Suitable polyether polyols are polyoxyalkylene polyols, i.e. adducts of ethylene oxide and water or of a polyvalent organic compound used as an initiator. As suitable organic initiators, mention may be made of the following compounds as well as their combinations:

ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, 1,5-pentanediol, hexylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, trimethylene glycol,

<EMI ID = 38.1>

1,2,6-hexanetriol, 1,1,1-trimethylolethane, 1,1,1, trimethylolpropane, 3- (2-hydroxyethoxy)  and 3- (2-hydroxy-

The polyether polyols described above are prepared according to known methods by reacting the material of

<EMI ID = 40.1>

an oxyalkylation catalyst, mostly an alkali metal hydroxide. The oxyalkylation of the polyvalent initiator takes place at temperatures which vary from

with the use of a sufficient quantity of alkylene oxide, the duration of the reaction being chosen with a view to obtaining a polyol having the desired molecular weight which is advantageously monitored during the course of the reaction.

<EMI ID = 46.1> the polyol produces more than one kind of oxyalkylene unit,

different alkylene oxides can then be introduced one after the other into the reaction system to obtain polyoxyalkylene chains which then contain blocks of different oxyalkylene units, or else various alkylene oxides can be introduced simultaneously into the reaction system for the formation of units with stochastic distribution. The polyoxyalkylene type chains can also consist mainly of single oxyalkylene type units, for example oxypropylene, with terminal oxyethylene units "

The second class of polyetherpolyols which are suitable for the manufacture of soft or flexible polyurethane foams are graft polymer polyetherpolyols. These polyols are prepared by polymerization

<EMI ID = 55.1>

butadiene. These polyols and other polymer polyols which can be used alone or in combination with the above-mentioned polyetherpolyols are described, inter alia,

US Pat. No. 3,383,351. They can be prepared by the polymerization of the monomers in the

The formation of urethane takes place in the presence of a small amount of catalyst, consisting of an amine catalyst and a metal catalyst, which accelerates

gelation of the mixture to be foamed. The amine component of the reaction mixture generating the polyurethane is, in most cases, a tertiary amine. As suitable amine catalysts, mention may be made of the following compounds and their mixtures:

<EMI ID = 68.1>

<EMI ID = 69.1>

generating the active catalyst, is present in the reaction mixture generating the polyurethane in an amount;

<EMI ID = 72.1>

<EMI ID = 73.1>

The metal catalysts that are used

with the amine catalyst during the manufacture of polyurethanes from polyether polyols, include

organic derivatives of tin, particularly compounds of tin with carboxylic acids, such as stannous octoate, stannous oleate, stannous acetate, stannous laurate and dibutyltin dilaurate. Other metal catalysts consist of organic derivatives of other polyvalent metals, such as zinc and nickel, for example nickel acetylacetonate. Usually, the amount of this metal cocatalyst in

the reaction mixture generating the polyurethane varies

from 0.05 to 2 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the polyetherpolyol.

The foaming takes place as a result of the presence of various amounts of a blowing agent in the reaction mixture, for example water, which generates carbon dioxide by reaction with the isocyanate, or by the use of a porogenic agent which evaporates under the effect of the heat generated by the exothermic reaction, or by the use of a combination of these two types of pore forming agents.

These various methods are well known. In accordance with the invention, the following pore-forming agents can be used, among others, instead of or in addition to water: methylene chloride, liquefied gases having a boiling point of less than 27 [ deg.] C and above -52 [deg.] C and other inert gases, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, helium and argon. As suitable liquid gases, there may be mentioned fluorinated aliphatic and cyclic hydrocarbons which volatilize at a temperature equal to or lower than the temperature of

the foaming mass. These gases are at least partially fluorinated and can also be substituted by other halogens. Fluorinated hydrocarbons which are suitable as blowing agents during the foaming of the conform mixture

to the present invention include trichloromonofluoro-

<EMI ID = 74.1>

fluorethane, 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-fluoro-3,4-difluoro4,4,4-trifluorobutane, hexafluorocyclobutane and octafluorocyclobutane. Another suitable class of blowing agents is that formed by thermally unstable compounds which liberate gases on heating, such as

<EMI ID = 75.1>

In the manufacture of flexible foams, it is particularly preferred to use water and a combination of water and a fluorinated hydrocarbon, such as trichloromonofluoromethane.

The amount of blowing agent required for foaming depends on various factors, such as, for example, the

desired density of the foam produced. Most of them

in cases, a proportion of 1 to 30 parts is used in

weight of pore-forming agent per 100 parts by weight of polyetherpolyol.

From the mixture in accordance with the present invention, a polyurethane foam can be obtained by implementing any known process, in particular the process in a single “one-shot” stage. During the implementation of such a process, expanded products are obtained when the reaction between the polyisocyanate is carried out

and polyether polyol at the same time as the foaming is carried out. The relative amounts of the components present in a usual mixture are not particularly critical. Polyetherpolyol and polyisocyanate form the main components of the mixture to be swelled. The relative amounts of these two components are those necessary for the formation of the urethane structure; these relative quantities are well known to the specialist

<EMI ID = 76.1>

water, the additional pore-forming agents, the amine catalyst and the metal catalyst are present in the mixture according to the invention in small amounts as necessary to obtain the functions which they are to fulfill.

As suitable surfactants, there may be mentioned foam stabilizers, for example a "pluronic" hydrolyzable polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene block copolymer, as described in United States Patents No. [deg.] 3,834,748 and 2,917,480.

Another class of suitable emulsifiers is that formed by non-hydrolyzable polysiloxane or polyoxyalkylene block copolymers, as disclosed in US Pat. No. 3,503,377.

The supports to which the flexible polyurethane foams in accordance with the invention can be bonded or glued consist of polyurethanes, paper, kraft paper, leather, hides, cotton, linen, silk, hemp, jute , wool, canvas, polyamides, polyesters, rayon, rayon acetate, polymers of styrene and polymers of vinyl chloride. As possible supports, there may also be mentioned metals containing iron and free from iron, materials containing glass, including glass, ceramics, earthenware and porcelain;

cellulosic substrates, including wood, plywood, rushes, bamboo or reeds;

materials containing proteins, including gelatins;

natural fibers;

as also building materials, including bricks, granite, sandstone, gypsum, slabs, wall plates and cement or concrete blocks;

thermosetting polymers, such as phenol-urea resins, epoxy resins, and polymers of coumarone and indene; and

thermoplastic polymers, such as acrylonitrile polymers, polycarbonates, polyacetals, polyamides, synthetic rubber, polyethylene and polypropylene.

Laminate structures made from a mixture according to the present invention can be used for a wide variety of purposes, for example, for insulation or

<EMI ID = 77.1>

this case, for soundproofing and insulation of building materials, for example preformed sheets etc. Blocks of the polyurethane foam can be glued or sealed together under the effect of heat, in order to produce bodies of larger dimensions from bodies of smaller distensions. Laminate materials can be made in one or more layers.

Other applications of the aforementioned laminate materials include the manufacture of padding

<EMI ID = 78.1>

car seats and bumper cushions.

Laminate materials are made by heating part of the surface or the entire surface of the urethane pad to a temperature above the point

<EMI ID = 79.1>

In general, it is advantageous not to heat the surface of the foam beyond a temperature higher than about

<EMI ID = 80.1>

The most advantageous methods include flame heating of surfaces or heat sealing.

during which the foam is continuously passed

of polyurethane onto a heat source and then immediately assembled to the desired support. Dielectric heating can also be done using heat lamps, such as infrared lamps, hot plates and hot air guns.

Preferably, but not necessarily, moderate pressure is applied when the support comes into contact with the surface of the polyurethane foam. This pressure can be exerted only by the weight of the foam or of the support, it being understood, however, that it is advantageous

The examples which follow illustrate the present invention without, however, limiting the latter. Unless otherwise indicated, all parts and percentages are given by weight "

At this time, you can add any additives, such as,

flame retardants, when it is desired to manufacture a flame retardant polyurethane foam. The surfactant, water, amine catalyst and fluorocarbon blowing agent are then incorporated, while stirring

using a spatula.

The contents of the container are then stirred for

15 seconds at 200 rpm and then stannous octoate is introduced as a cocatalyst using an injection syringe. After further stirring for 8 seconds, the polyisocyanate is added rapidly, followed by stirring.

for another 7 seconds. After stirring, the mixture is poured into a 30 x 30 x 30 cm container lined with parchment paper inside a wooden form., The foam is allowed to stand for at least 3 minutes

in the form and then cured at 125 [deg.] C for

5 minutes (unless otherwise indicated in the examples).

The degree of openness of the foam (breathing capacity of the foam) is measured by the air flow and is expressed in 1 / min.

when hot-glued or sealed foam specimens cut to the following dimensions: 3 x 50 x 150 mm, using a Vertrod device, model 8HT, at temperature

and maximum length of stay. We repeat a few times

this process, according to the "number of cycles" indicated in. : examples that follow. We glue a surface 5 cm long and 6 cm wide. The bonded foam specimens are allowed to age under normal conditions for at least 24 hours. The bond strength is then determined in an Instron-model table device TM,

using a cross head speed of 5 cm / min

and a recording speed of 5 cm / min. During

this test, the foam samples are kept in place

using pneumatic traction clips. We express

the strength of the bonding in g / cm.

The creaming time is the time, expressed in seconds, required for the mixture in the process of foaming or

to swell, to become heterogeneous. To this end, we pay attention and note the time required for the mixture, initially clear, to pass to the milky white state.

The lift time; is the time, expressed in seconds, for the mixture to reach its maximum lift height.

By surface sagging, we mean the height, expressed in centimeters, of which the upper surface of the foam sags after reaching its height

maximum lift.

The improvement in the thermal bonding properties of a conventional polyurethane foam is demonstrated by the addition of different amounts of dipropylene glycol serving as a polyol type modifier:

according to the process described above, 72 parts of polyether polyol I (the product of

<EMI ID = 91.1>

of propylene oxide - 1,2 and 14% ethylene oxide with a molecular weight of 3500) and 24 parts of polyether polyol II (the reaction product consisting of 80%

of an addition polymer obtained by the reaction of glycerin with propylene-1,2 oxide with a molecular weight of
3000, copolymerized with 20% of a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile) and 4 parts of dipropylene glycol serving as modifier polyol were then introduced therein.

Then 4 parts of water serving as blowing agent were added, along with 2 parts of a catalyst.

80% 2,4-toluylènediisocyanate and 20% 2,6toluylènediisocyanate). The isocyanate number was 105

The physical properties of the resulting foam, including the strength of the foam-to-foam bond, are shown in Table I; the indications in Table I reveal an improvement in the strength of the foam-to-foam bond with increasing amounts of dipropylene glycol serving as a modifier (4, 5, 6, 7 parts in

The extent of activity of stannous octoate decreases with increasing concentration of dipropylene glycol serving as a modifier. It is also visible, as well as

as already described above, that the amount of low molecular weight modifier polyol incorporated in accordance with the present invention has a critical upper limit. The data relating to the strength of the foam-to-foam bond shows that there is also a critical lower limit.

It is not enough to bring the hydroxyl number of the polyetherpolyol to its high values, but that the presence of polyols

A series of flexible polyurethane foams comparable on an industrial scale were manufactured at a flow rate of about 30 to 36 kg / min. The foams were made as follows:

Mixtures of the usual composition suitable for the preparation of polyurethane foams were introduced into a drum with a capacity of 190 liters, together with the modifying polyol to be tested, in corresponding quantities, and the whole was mixed for a few hours. A constant flow of the polyol mixture (21 to 22 kg / min) was introduced, along with water, amine catalyst and the surfactant silicone.
(800 to 1000 g / min), a separate stream of blowing agent
(trichlorofluoromethane: 300 to 500 g / min) and a separate stream of toluylènediisocyanate (10 to 11 kg / min) in a hybrid foaming installation, under the usual low pressure foaming conditions.

 For the manufacture of flame retardant foams, tri-
(2-chlorethyl) -phosphate as a separate stream
(1300 to 1500 g / min) or a mixture of a dispersion resin of polyvinyl chloride and antimony oxide

familiar with polyol.

The mixing speed was 5000 rpm, the nozzle

<EMI ID = 137.1>

<EMI ID = 138.1> was 2.4 to 3.6 m / min. The foaming mixture emerging at room temperature was poured onto a continuously moving endless belt. The foam was allowed to sag and harden in blocks 3 meters long, 65 cm wide and 45 cm high. After

24 hour aging at room temperature,

the foams were cut and their physical properties determined. The results obtained appear in Table VIII below.

<EMI ID = 139.1>

<EMI ID = 140.1>

excellent foams when using diethylene glycol or dipropylene glycol as the modifier polyol. The witness foam T demonstrates, during aging

in a humid atmosphere, harmful permanent deformation under pressure. The permanent deformations of

foams made using the blend according to the present invention were good both before and after humid aging.

In all the examples, with the exception of Example 27, bond strengths greater than

that of control T. With regard to the overall results obtained in the context of the tests in question, carried out on foams obtained with mixtures stirred manually

and agitated by machine, we can say that the resistances

of the bonding of Example 27 are abnormal.

(b) = silicone-polyether copolymer, molecular weight about 10,000.

The foams prepared in accordance with Examples 26 to 32 were tested according to the following method in order to determine their properties after covering with the flame; samples of foam with a thickness of

and the support made of vinyl material and fabric was 90 cm; the covering or coating flame was obtained using propane gas and air in a ratio of 58: 400.

The foam was run at a predetermined speed over the flame and then pressed against the support so as to stick to it by passing the assembly through the interval set at 10 mm of two cylinders. The thickness of the foam after the capping or coating was measured and was subtracted from the initial thickness to determine the amount of foam removed by combustion. Bond strengths were determined by separating the 2.5 x 15 cm test specimen layers of the laminate material from each other using

of the aforementioned Instron device. Bond strengths were determined at various times after capping or coating in order to establish the rate of their increase. The speed of recovery or coating was varied in order to make the test more critical. In each test, a poly foam was used as a control.

and the support gave way (property called bond strength at break) or if the foam cracked (property

that a foam splits or tears when the resistance of the foam / support bond exceeds a determined value. It is in this case impossible to obtain a value for the strength of the foam / support bond. It is also known that samples which are subject to tearing of the foam, are of excellent quality.

The physical properties of the foams and the results of thermal or hot bonding appear in Table IX, while Table X gives the results of the flame coating or coating.

The results thus obtained show that:

(1) the flame coating properties of

<EMI ID = 156.1>

The invention is excellent by conventional standards as demonstrated by the results of bond strength and by the results obtained with samples subject to foam tearing;

(2) the values of the bonding strength of the polyesterpolyol polyurethane foam U used as a control are greater than those of each of the products of the examples and this because of the higher tensile / elongation values of the foam. This is a known phenomenon and

does not in any way prejudice the excellent results obtained with polyetherpolyol polyurethane foams made from a mixture in accordance with the invention;

(3) data relating to aging in a humid environment show that foams made in accordance with the present invention are superior to

a polyester foam (control U), given that the latter was already completely decomposed or disintegrated after 3 aging cycles of 5 hours in a humid environment and that it then had a bond strength of 0;

(4) Development of bond strength requires more time in the control T laminate materials than in the foam laminate materials prepared in accordance with the present invention. This can be qualitatively determined immediately after coating or coating by separating the samples under tension. This is a significant disadvantage of the foams of control sample I.

Examples 33 to 38

The procedures described in Examples 26-32 were repeated except that the vinyl upholstery material with automotive backing was replaced with sheets of polyvinyl chloride, rayon acetate, etc. leather, cotton, polyamide or paper

and comparable bond strengths were obtained between the supports and the polyurethane foam.
