Description

   <EMI ID=1.1>

obtenu".

 <EMI ID=2.1>

- l'irradiation d'une cible contenant une substance fissile;
- la dissolution de la cible irradiée en milieu basique;
- la filtration de la solution;
- l'acidification de la solution filtrée et le piégeage de l'iode qui se dégage sur de l'amiante platinée;

 <EMI ID=3.1>

 <EMI ID=4.1>

 <EMI ID=6.1>

 <EMI ID=8.1>

got".

The present invention relates to a process for the production of a fission product, namely iodine-131. The invention relates more particularly to a process for the production of radioactive iodine-131, having a high degree of purity and a high specific activity.

As is known, iodine-131 is a very well-known radioactive isotope, used for the production of radioactive products, and more particularly for the study and therapy of thyroid function. The main manufacturing processes

 <EMI ID = 2.1>

undergone irradiation (n, y) or (n, fission). Irradiation (n, y), to obtain appropriate activity levels, requires the irradiation and reprocessing of significant quantities of tellurium. Two types of processes for reprocessing these tellurium targets exist: wet and dry. The wet process has the disadvantage of creating a large volume of residual liquid at the distillation level while the dry process involves the use of technically sophisticated equipment.

The object of the invention is therefore to provide a process for the preparation of radioactive iodine-131 which makes it possible to overcome the abovementioned drawbacks.

The process of the invention makes it possible to prepare fission iodine-131 with a high degree of purity and a high specific activity, by

lot of 300 curies and more. Another important advantage of the process of the invention lies in the fact that it can be coupled to a process for the production of molybdenum-99, an isotope of considerable importance in radiopharmaceutical production. Production of two Mo-99 + isotopes

1-131, or even three MB-99, 1-131 and Xe-
133, can therefore be carried out starting from the same process.

To this end, according to the invention, the process for producing iodine-131 comprises the irradiation of a target containing fissile substances, the dissolution of the irradiated target in basic medium, the filtration of this solution, the acidification. of the filtered solution in the presence of an oxidant, trapping 1. ' molecular iodine -
131 which is released during the acidification of the above-mentioned solution on platinum asbestos, the washing with water of iodized platinum asbestos, the treatment of asbestos washed with water using a solution containing a reducing agent to desorb the iodine, and the separation of iodine-131 from the radioactive solution thus obtained.

According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, an adsorbent column formed from an asbestos support is used for trapping the iodine:

According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the desorption solution is a basic solution containing as reducing agent hydrazine, a solution of sodium hydroxide and hydrazine hydrate particularly suitable for this purpose. .

According to another particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention,

the desorption solution is a basified solution, containing ferrous sulfate as a reducing agent.

According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the iodine-131 is separated from the rest of the radioactive solution

by concentrating it by distillation or separation on an adsorbent column.

The invention also relates to iodine-
131 of fission thus obtained.

Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description of a process for manufacturing iodine-131 according to the invention, given below by way of nonlimiting example and with reference to the attached drawings.

Figure 1 is a sectional view of a target used in a method of manufacturing
131-1 according to the invention. Figure 2 is a sectional view along line II-II of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a schematic representation of the main steps of this 131-1 manufacturing process.

In FIGS. 1 and 2, the same reference notations designate identical elements.

As can be seen in FIG. 3 of the accompanying drawings, the method of the invention essentially comprises the following steps:
- the irradiation of a target containing a fissile substance;
- dissolution of the irradiated target in basic medium;
- filtration of the solution;
- acidification of the filtered solution and trapping of the iodine which is released on platinum asbestos;
- desorption of iodine by means of a reducing agent; and
the purification of the radioactive solution thus obtained, that is to say in fact the separation of the
131-1 of the rest of the solution.

Details of the different stages

of this process are described below.

Target.

The target is composed of fissile material 1 covered with an aluminum tube 2, forming an envelope. In fact, as can be seen more particularly in Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, the fissile substance 1 is located between the outer and inner walls of an aluminum tube 2 with double walls.

The total length of the target, i.e. the dimension in the direction of the axis of the tube, is 160 mm, its internal diameter of

19.46 mm and its outside diameter of 22 mm.

The fuel has a length of 148mm; it therefore remains at a distance of approximately 6 mm from the

two ends of the tube. The width of the fuel is 54 mm; it therefore does not extend over the entire contour of the tube. The fuel thickness is 0.51 mm.

The fuel contains 93% enriched uranium. The total weight of uranium per target is 4.30 gr. The target therefore comprises approximately 4 g of U-235. The rest is aluminum.

Irradiation.

The uranium targets used in the context of the process of the present invention are generally exposed to neutron fluxes of the order of 1.5 to 2.5. 10 14 neutrons / cm2.sec. Normal irradiation times are 100

at 150 hours.

Dissolution in basic medium.

Usually used to dissolve targets

 <EMI ID = 3.1>

of 3M NaOH and 4M NaN03 particularly suitable for this purpose.

Filtration.

After dissolution, the liquid phase is separated

of the solid phase by filtration. The filter retains the solid phase containing the uranium and

most of the fission products. The liquid phase passing through the filter contains

soluble fission products, including iodine-

131.

Acidification and trapping.

The acidification of the filtered solution is carried out by the addition of concentrated nitric acid,

for example 15 N. A large part of the iodine is

 <EMI ID = 4.1>

To improve this release of iodine, acidify it. cation takes place in the presence of an oxidant. A stream of air can be used for this purpose.

 <EMI ID = 5.1>

molecular-131 is then sent to a trap containing platinum asbestos on which it is fixed. These traps are in fact adsorbent columns formed of an asbestos support covered with a platinum powder, the percentage by weight of platinum of these columns being of the order of 10 to
15%. Molecular iodine combines with platinum under

 <EMI ID = 6.1>

iodine on the platinum asbestos, the trap containing the iodine-131 is then washed with water until neutral to eliminate contamination by acid vapors. The extraction of molybdenum-99 from the acidified solution can be carried out in a manner known per se by chromatographic means.

Desorption.

To desorb the iodine from platinum asbestos, this is treated either with a basic solution containing hydrazine as a reducing agent, or with

a basified solution of ferrous sulfate. To ensure a good desorption yield, that is to say to obtain the precipitation of platinum in metallic form and the dissolution of iodine in the form of iodide, it is preferable to operate

under heating and stirring. In the case

where hydrazine is used as reducing agent, solutions of sodium hydroxide and hydrazine hydrate are preferably used, the solutions <EMI ID = 7.1>

particularly well. An oxidative treatment after reduction optionally applies depending on the nature of the reducing agent which has been used. In the case of reduction (in the form of hydrate or sulphate) to hydrazine, this treatment can be carried out by means of hydrogen peroxide or another peroxide, such as

 <EMI ID = 8.1>

This oxidative treatment after reduction is not necessary if the reduction has been carried out in the presence of ferrous sulphate. It will also be noted that the use of ferrous sulphate as a reducing agent modifies the procedure used with hydrazine, in the sense that the ferrous salt must be introduced in acid solution, for example in the presence of sulfuric acid, so as to impregnate the asbestos before basification of the medium and filtration. In basic medium, the "stable" chemical combination of ferrous salt is obviously hydroxide.

Purification.

The iodine-131 is separated from the rest of the radioactive solution by concentrating the latter, preferably by distillation or separation on an adsorbent column, for example on a chromatographic column. When using distillation as a means

volume concentration of the radioactive solution, it is carried out in an acid medium, for example in the presence of an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, by heating the solution until boiling. This purification step, whether carried out by distillation or separation on a column, makes it possible to remove the chemical impurities originating from the dissolution of the platinum asbestos, such as, for example, silicates and aluminates and allows obtain a final product based on iodine-131 of high radiochemical purity and a volume activity which can range, for example, from 5 to 10 Ci / ml.

The invention is illustrated in more detail by the following concrete application example.

Example.

Six uranium-235 targets meeting the above characteristics are exposed to

a neutron flux of 1.5.1014 neutrons / cm <2> sec.

The irradiation time is 134 hours.

The six irradiated targets containing 24 g of U-235 are dissolved after 24 hours of decay

 <EMI ID = 9.1>

After dissolution, the liquid phase is separated from the solid phase by filtration using a Buchner filter. The filter retains the solid phase containing the uranium and most of the fission products. The liquid phase which passes through the filter contains soluble fission products, including iodine-131.

The liquid phase is transferred to a tank for acidification. The acidification is carried out by the addition of concentrated nitric acid. Simultaneously, the solution is stirred in air and brought to the boil. This operation

is fixed. After an hour, one can consider that 1 acidification is finished. We released about
80% of the iodine initially present. The trap containing iodine-131 is then disconnected and is subjected to the reprocessing phases described below.

0.1M. It is heated for 5 minutes until boiling while stirring. It is allowed to cool and filtered on paper. The filtrate is recovered. The platinum asbestos is treated a second time as described above. After the second desorption phase, the two filtrates contain 95% of the adsorbed activity.

The filtrate is worn three times in a row

The basic solution is then introduced into an apparatus for distillation. After

1 hour, about 80% of the contents of the balloon are recovered in the first hatch.

The results of the production obtained are given below:
- activity produced: 146 Ci, 8 days after leaving the reactor targets;

volume activity: 6.5 Ci / ml.

- the radiochemical purity of the product is greater than
95%;
- the radionuclidic purity is greater than 99% after decay of iodine-133 (half-life: 20.8 hours).

It should be understood that the present invention is in no way limited to the above embodiments and that many modifications can be made thereto without departing from the scope of this patent.
