<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>

Process for treating steel slag, with a view to its recovery.
The present invention relates to a process for treating steel slag, with a view to its recovery in the form of fertilizers. This process applies to steel slag, both phosphorous and non-phosphorous, originating in particular from the refining of cast iron by blowing oxygen.
In recent years, the applicant has proposed various methods of treatment of these types of slag, including in particular a step of grinding the slag and a step of attack with phosphoric and / or nitric acid. The slag thus treated is then added with various substances, then granulated; the granules are dried, sieved, bagged and shipped. The grinding aims, in a conventional manner, to produce a slag flour having the desired particle size, while the addition of
<EMI ID = 1.1> product fertilizer.
These methods give extremely interesting results in
with regard to the quality of the fertilizers produced. They nevertheless have a significant drawback, linked in particular to the cost of the grinding step, generally a dry grinding which requires a large consumption of energy. Another disadvantage of dry grinding is the time necessary to reach the fine particle size promoting the subsequent attack by phosphoric and / or nitric acid.
The present invention relates to a method making it possible to remedy these drawbacks and offering other advantages which will be explained below.
The process which is the subject of the present invention is based on the unexpected finding that
the aforementioned drawbacks can be eliminated by applying pulp grinding. This is a well known technique, which consists in facilitating grinding by grinding the material in the presence of a liquid, generally water. This technique is used in particular in the field of ore preparation.
To the knowledge of the applicant, however, it has never been proposed to apply it to the grinding of slag, because on the one hand it leads to a product containing too high a proportion of water for the manufacture of fertilizers and on the other hand, there is nothing to indicate that the grain size required for this production can be achieved economically.
The process which is the subject of the present invention, in the-
<EMI ID = 2.1> tily characterized in that before the grinding operation, the said slag is mixed with an aqueous liquid, in that the said grinding is carried out by the technique known as pulp grinding and in that that at least part of the liquid present in the ground mixture is extracted before carrying out said attack with phosphoric and / or nitric acid.
According to the invention, it has been found to be particularly advantageous to use an aqueous liquid consisting solely of water.
Also according to the invention, the amount of water used is advantageously between 0.25, 1 and 2.5 1 per kg of unmilled slag.
It has indeed appeared that an amount of water less than 0.25 1 per kg of slag does not allow sufficient fluidity to be achieved to ensure efficient grinding. In addition, it requires increased energy consumption to knead the dough formed.
Likewise, an amount of water greater than 2.5 l per kg of slag no longer gives any additional advantage from the point of view of grinding.
According to an advantageous variant of the process of the invention, to use said grinding, balls made of ceramic material, optionally comprising a metal core.
Also according to the invention, the grinding time is adjusted so as to obtain a ground slag having the desired particle size.

press filtration the total or partial extraction of the liquid present in the ground mixture. These techniques do not require any heating, which favorably influences the overall energy balance of the treatment.
According to the invention, the extraction of liquid is followed by the acid attack operation. The reaction of the slag with phosphoric and / or nitric acid is exothermic; it causes the mixture to heat up and consequently a certain amount of water to evaporate from this mixture.
Furthermore, it is known that the final granulation of the product requires therein a water content of 10% to 20% by weight.
In the context of the process of the invention, the elimination of the liquid present in the ground mixture therefore comprises a mechanical phase, for example by wringing and / or filtration under a press and a thermal phase, namely an evaporation of water under l effect of overheating following the acid attack.
According to the invention, the relative importance of these two phases is adjusted as a function of the water content of the ground mixture, so that after the acid attack, its water content is between 10% and 20% by weight.
It should be recalled here that, in the context of the methods previously proposed by the applicant, the acid attack can
<EMI ID = 4.1>
and also containing a certain amount of water.
The water content of the ground mixture must therefore be adapted as a function of the possible addition of a by-product of this type and the extraction of liquid by wringing and / or filtration under a press must be carried out accordingly.
When the said by-product is not added, the liquid is extracted by wringing and / or filtration under a press, until the liquid content of the ground mixture is understood, according to the invention, between 18% and 40% by weight before the attack with phosphoric and / or nitric acid.
When, on the contrary, the said wet by-product is added, the liquid is extracted by wringing and / or filtration under a press until the liquid content of the ground mixture is, according to the invention, between 15% and 25% by weight before the attack with phosphoric and / or nitric acid and the addition of the said by-product.
The following example makes it possible to realize the advantage of the grinding process according to the invention for the treatment of steel slag.
A slag of known initial particle size was subjected on the one hand to dry grinding, and on the other hand to pulp grinding with water. The attached figure expresses the result of these tests; it gives the percentage (R) of grains rejected by the sieve as a function of the dimension d of the mesh of the sieve. The results will be compared on the basis of the percentage of grains rejected on a 0.2 mm mesh sieve.
Initially, the slag was composed of 100% grains of, less than 5 mm; it corresponds to the Ref.2 curve in the figure, for which the percentage of refusal at 0.2 mm is 97%.
Dry grinding for 45 minutes provided a grain size composition expressed by the curve K. It is found that the percentage of refusal at 0.2 mm reaches 55%.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
minutes, the slag had a particle size represented by the curve L; the percentage of refusal at 0.2 mm is reduced to 7.5%, which is approximately 8 times less than for dry grinding.
The ground mixture obtained by grinding to pulp with water was then subjected to a wringing, then to an attack with phosphoric acid, without and with the addition of wet by-product.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
to the type of subsequent attack.
For the comparison, 956 kg of ground and drained mixture containing 18% water was used, that is to say 172 kg. 558 kg of phosphoric acid containing 17% water, or 95 kg, was added, 563 kg of wet by-product to approximately 50% water, ie 280 kg of water and 150 kg of finely ground dry LD slag. with a suitable binder containing no water. The total weight of the mixture thus amounted to 2227 kg, containing 547 kg of water, or 25%. After completion of the acid reaction, the humidity of the mixture to be granulated, measured in the laboratory, was 19%, that is to say a value ensuring correct particle size of the mixture. The exothermic reaction of the acid therefore caused the evaporation of 6% water, or 134 kg.
If no wet by-product had been added, the weight of the mixture would have been 1664 kg, with 267 kg of water, or 16%. The quantities of ground and drained mixture, ie 956 kg, and of phosphoric acid, ie 558 kg, brought into contact being the same as in the first case, the exothermic reaction also eliminates 134 kg of water and the mixture to be granulated does not contains more,
<EMI ID = 7.1>
clearly insufficient to allow correct granulation. The final mixture contains 1397 kg of dry matter and it must contain 247 kg of water after the acid attack, to present
<EMI ID = 8.1>
tity of water removed during the exothermic reaction of the acid, ie 134 kg, the ground mixture must in this case contain
(247 + 134) kg of water, i.e. 381 kg. If we deduct the 95 kg of water from the acid, the rest, that is to say 286 kg must be provided by the drained mixture; as this contains 784 kg of dry matter, this means that the spin can, in this case, be limited to a weight content of water of 27%.
This example clearly shows that pulp grinding achieves a finer particle size than dry grinding for the same slag grinding time. Conversely, it also shows that the same fineness of particles can be achieved in a shorter time by pulp milling than by dry grinding. Finally, it shows that the water extraction operation can, in the process of the invention, be adapted according to the type of acid attack carried out subsequently.
It should also be emphasized that the process of the invention is not limited to the description which has just been given, but that it also encompasses variants such as the use, for pulp milling, of water containing part of the acid intended for slag attack, or the use of triple superphosphate as a total or partial replacement for phosphoric acid when no wet by-product is used
