Descreve-se um processo para operação de um contador de vários estágios em apenas uma direção de contagem com as seguintes etapas: - alteração do valor de contagem de um contador de um só estágio, alterável apenas em uma direção de contagem, a estados de valor de contagem predeterminados do contador de vários estágios, - determinação dos respectivos estados de valor de contagem do contador de vários estágios e do contador auxiliar de um só estágio, - comparação dos valores dos estados de valor de contagem determinados de contador de um só estágio e do contador de vários estágios, e - produção de um sinal indicador com base no resultado da comparação.
