Abstract

"ELETRóLITO, E, MéTODOS PARA USAR ANODOS INERTES E CATODOS UMECTáVEIS NA PRODUçãO ELETROLìTICA DE ALUMìNIO E PARA ELETROLISAR ALUMINA ABAIXO DE 1000<198>C". Um novo método para a produção eletrolítica de alumínio, usando uma nova composição de eletrólito e uma operação em baixa temperatura, é provido. O eletrólito compreende uma mistura de fluoreto de alumínio - fluoreto de potássio com de cerca de 2 % em peso a 6 % em peso de alumina. O novo eletrólito permite a redução eletrolítica de alumina em temperaturas tão baixas como 700<198>C. A menor temperatura permite o uso de anodos inertes, e conduz ao uso de catodos umedecidos. A nova mistura de eletrólitos tem uma maior solubilidade para alumina e permanece completamente líquida, mesmo com 5 % em peso de alumina presente no eletrólito durante a eletrólise. Oxigênio (02) é o único gás gerado durante a eletrólise de alumina com o novo eletrólito e os anodos inertes, assim eliminando a produção de gases estufa. Os anodos e catodos podem ser montados em uma configuração vertical, horizontal ou uma outra.
