Description

  Selon le présent procédé, on fait passer  chaud le mélange d'hydrogène et d'azote  à purifier contenant des impuretés oxygénées  (oxyde de carbone, oxygène etc.), sous     l'hyper-          pression    même employée pour la synthèse de  l'ammoniaque, sur une matière catalysante à  base de fer et on élimine par simple refroi  dissement l'eau ainsi formée;

  Process for the elimination of oxygenated impurities contained in gases intended for the synthesis of ammonia under hyperpressiou, and apparatus for its anise covers. The present invention comprises a process for the elimination of the oxygenated impurities contained in the gases intended for the synthesis of ammonia under hyperpressure and an apparatus for its covering.

  According to the present process, the mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen to be purified containing oxygenated impurities (carbon monoxide, oxygen, etc.) is passed hot, under the same high pressure used for the synthesis of ammonia, on an iron-based catalyzing material and the water thus formed is removed by simple cooling;

   the temperature at which this purification can be carried out may be lower than that required for the synthetic production of ammonia, for example 400-450 0, and the catalyst material employed for the purification may be that which was used for the production catalyst of ammonia and which is exhausted from the point of view of this production. It has in fact been found that, under the above conditions, it is possible to destroy, with extreme efficiency, the carbon monoxide which may be present in the mixture treated, even when the proportion of carbon monoxide is very high. , for example greater than 5 / o.

   The remarkable fact is that this is not a simple wise roughing-up, that is to say a removal of only most of the carbon monoxide, but that one can to obtain a remarkably complete destruction of this oxide, which can be prolonged for a very long time. Under these conditions, it becomes unnecessary to employ all the other complex, tedious or expensive purification methods which have in fact remained indispensable heretofore with the ammonia synthesis methods employing pressures of about 200 atmospheres.

  For the implementation of the present process, an apparatus may be employed which comprises a device containing the catalyst material, around which circulate the gases to be reacted, so as to be heated by indirect contact with the catalyst material before passing through it. ci, and it is also possible to adjust the temperature of the gases for purification by electric heating circuits; this device is preferably iiitérebangeable with those of the installation producing ammonia.

   Thanks to the hypertension, all of the carbon monoxide is transformed, with the possible production of a very slight quantity of free carbon, in methane and water vapor; this is condensed by passing the gases through a ser pentin immersed in a stream of cold water, then in a water trap. Oxygen which may be present in the treated mixture is also removed in the same way in the form of water.
