Description

Process for the purification of gases intended for the synthesis of ammonia. The present invention relates to a process for the purification of gases intended for the synthesis of ammonia.

These gases contain nitrogen and hydrogen in the desired proportions and as impurities oxidizable products, reducible products and oxygen.

Now, we know that when it comes to ammonia synthesis processes, the elimination of these various substances is essential, and we have found a simple and very economical means of eliminating from a on the other hand oxygen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, on the other hand phosphorus and sulfur compounds.

According to the purification process, the gases intended for the synthesis of ammonia, slightly moist, are passed over carbon under pressure and at a temperature below 600 ° C., and under conditions suitable for ensuring oxidation of the gas. all the oxidizable impurities, then treats the gases with bodies capable of retaining the products formed by the transformation of the impurities.

In fact, on contact with the carbon forming a catalyst, the oxygen contained in the gases transforms the carbon monoxide and the hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide, which can be easily removed from the gases by any known means and in particular using of al calis. The oxygen, carbon monoxide and the hydrocarbons which are found in the state of impurity in the gases are thus eliminated, when, it goes without saying, the constituents are in the desired proportions.

Care must be taken that the quantity of oxygen is sufficient to carry out the necessary oxidation operations, optionally adding oxygen in the form of oxygen or in the form of air.

In contact with this same carbon catalyst on the other hand, the reducible compounds such as the phosphorus and sulfur compounds contained in the gas are reduced by the hydrogen itself contained in the gases, into phosphorus hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide, that the gases can be easily removed by any known means, and in particular using chrotrtic acid.

By way of non-limiting example of carrying out this process, it can be assumed that one has to purify a gas containing three volumes of hydrogen and one volume of nitrogen and also containing sulfur and phosphorus compounds. 0.4% carbon monoxide and 0.2 to 0.3% oxygen and finally small amounts of acetylene.

This slightly damp gas is passed through. under pressure of at least one atmosphere on charcoal (preferably in small pieces) heated to a temperature below 600 ° C.; the carbon monoxide is completely transformed into carbon dioxide very easy to retain as seen above, while the sulfur and phosphorus compounds are reduced by hydrogen in the presence of carbon, giving hydrogen sulphide and phosphorus hydrogen which is absorbed quantitatively by chromic acid. The acetylene will be oxidized forming carbonic acid and water.

The process is carried out at a temperature below 60011 C. This temperature must not be exceeded, in order to avoid the transformation of oxygen into water in the presence of hydrogen.
