Fig. 1 et 2 sont respectivement des vues de face et de côté des organes assurant l'orientabilité dans le plan horizontal; Fig. 3 est une coupe verticale suivant 3-3 de fig. 4;
Steering device for automobile headlights. The object of the invention is a device for orienting automobile headlights, comprising a combination, on the one hand, of a control member wedged on a headlight-carrying shaft to which it can impart a rotational movement. around its vertical geometric axis, said member being controlled by means of gearing. 3 and of Lin reference to chain, by one of the steering members of the car, the other go,
of a housing fixed to said headlight-carrying axle and containing a tangent screw meshing with a toothed sector which carries at its bare end the headlight-carrying rod, the latter being able to pivot, in a vertical plane, around the axis of said sector toothed, the tangent screw being actuated at a distance by means of one of two control members acting on one of the two parts of a reversible drive device.
The appended drawing represents an embodiment of the object of the invention given to by way of example and a variant.
Fig.  1  and 2 are respectively front and side views of the components ensuring orientability in the horizontal plane; Fig.  3  is a vertical section along  3-3  of fig. 4;
Fig. 4 is. a horizontal section along 4-4 of fig. 3; Fig. 5 and 6 are respectively front and side views of control units specially applicable to Ford cars; Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the orientability members in the vertical plane ; Finally fig. 8 and 9 are, on a larger scale, views showing the 'ratchets being to dragged into the 'one or the other direction the worm of fig. 7.
In fig. 1 to 4, a designates a bronze box in two parts assembled by bolts a ', and in which is housed an endless screw b meshing with a helical helical wheel c keyed on an axis cl to the upper part of which is fixed the rod of a headlight support.
This axis rests on a ball e which - separates it from an axis f integral with the sleeve a 'of the box a and itself fixed to the frame of the car.
The axis bl of screw b carries, externally to the box a, a pinion g driven, by means of a Galle chain h, by a toothed wheel i, on the axis j ' of which a pinion j is keyed. This meshes with a toothed sector k which pivots on an axis kl under the control of a bar 1 connected to the steering rod ; the latter is actuated, as we know, by the steering wheel of the car and itself actuates the wheel connection bars in the usual manner.
The gears i and j and the sector k are mounted on a rule m fixed by nuts îi to, two bosses o come of cast iron with sleeve 0. This rule is provided with a longitudinal slot _p which makes it possible to adjust the position of the axes j ' and kl and, consequently, that of the toothed wheels and the tension of the chain h.
As can be seen, any change of direction given to the wheels is transmitted at the same time, by the bar 1, to the sector k which, by pivoting in one direction or in the * other, produces a corresponding rotation of the toothed wheels j i g and, consequently, of the screw < B> b, of the helical wheel c and of the headlight axle d.
Figs. 5 and 6 represent a control mode of the steerability device which has just been described suitable to a car to </ B> transverse direction, and more particularly applicable to Ford cars. This command is carried out as follows: On the toothed wheel i is fixed a crank r carrying one of the ends of a connecting rod s fitted with an adjustable tensioner t.
The other end qe of this connecting rod is articulated to another crank v wedged on an axis iv. This is journaled in a sleeve x fixed to </ B> the car. A the other end of this axis iv is placed one of the forks of a to cardan y transmission the other fork of which is attached to the lower part of the z steering shaft. A For this purpose, this part of the transmission is fitted with a special y ' nut that Yon screws in instead of the one that Ford cars usually have.
This small method of fixing can also be replaced by any other easy to imagine allowing to transmit the rotational movement of the steering shaft z to the axis w.
The arm of the crank v is pierced with several holes v 'allowing the connecting rod s to be fixed more or less far from the axis îv to adjust the amplitude of the deflection of the headlight carrier axis d.
To allow the light beam to be moved in a vertical plane, it is interposed between the headlight and the device shown in FIGS. 1 to 4, Lin second housing enclosing components intended to move the headlight in a vertical plane either directly or by a device < B> from command to remotely placed within reach of the driver or a traveler.
This second housing is shown in section by FIG. 7.
The headlight is carried by a rod 2. This small one oscillates around an axis 3 and it ends with a toothed sector 4 which attacks a worm 5, set on an axis 6.
The latter carries two à ratchets 7 and 8 that two ratchets can operate in the opposite direction to each other. In the rest period, as has been shown, for the wheel 7. in fig. 7, the ratchets are not engaged with the teeth of the wheels. By pulling on a cable 9, the wheel 8 is driven by a pawl, in the direction of the arrow 10. The headlight tilts then in the direction of the arrow 11. As soon as all traction on said cable is stopped, a spring 12 brings the ratchet to the rest position shown in dotted lines fig. 9. Pulling on a 13 cable causes the headlight to tilt in the opposite direction.
If necessary, the height of the light beam of the headlight can still be adjusted by hand by acting on the axis 6 to using a wrench 14. 'A removable 15 casing facilitates access to the ratchet wheels.
A socket 16 allows the housing to be fitted onto the axis d (fig. 1 to 3).
