Cylinder (the spinning machine. The present. Invention relates to a cylinder -of a spinning machine, for example drawing, whose body is made of fibrous material and is coniplimated between two metal end plates, this body of fibrous material and -these plates being pierced centrally so that the cylinder can be mounted and can rotate on a fixed shaft, characterized by the fact that the fibrous material is compressed more strongly near the 'center of the cylinder than at its periphery so to, form respectively at.
center -a compact bearing surface and bearing of the cylinder on the shaft and at the periphery of the cylinder an active surface of soft friction, having -a strong -coefficient of friction, The drawing Annex. represents, to by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an axial section of the first form; Fig. 2 is, at reduced scale, a lateral - elevation; Fig. 3 is a front view with part in, axial section of the second form.
The -corps of the cylinder is made of a fibrous material; it can be a textile material, cotton for example. This one here can be used in the form of fiber, therefore unspun, or 1 * 1 eg, and be used in the form of fabric.
Since in the unspun form it is cheaper, it is better to use it in this form.
The fibrous material is compressed so as to to form a compact plate, from which are cut discs 3, of a diameter ddiiii é. . A number of these disks are then stacked on top of each other to be subjected to final compression.
To obtain a cylinder whose fibers, at the periphery of the cylinder, are only compressed just enough to ensure a sufficiently strong - active friction surface to, -the wear, tan say that in the center of the cylinder they are compressed strongly enough to form a compact body which can be used as a bearing hub. we use filling pieces or corners -1 relatively thick titi center and very thin at their periphery, to obtain a more authentic compression in the center than on the outskirts.
These wedges are preferably arranged symmetrically on the side of the stack -of the disks 3, coiicentric- quently to these disks, but they could also be arranged. on either side of the stack or between the two middle 3, disks of the stack. These wedges have a dual purpose, first of all to increase the thickness of the central portion of the cylinder, in order to increase the bearing and rolling surface of the cylinder on its shaft; and secondly increasing the state of compression of the fiber in the central portion of the cylinder sufficiently so that the fiber itself can be used as a rolling medium.
To maintain the assembly formed by the stacked discs 3 and the corners -1, it is enclosed between -two domed metal discs 5, outwards in the middle, at 6, to increase the length of the rolling surface 7 having to come into contact with the shaft 10, < / B> and held together ù the desired distance with using rivets 8.
These metal end discs are slightly smaller in diameter than the 3 fibrous discs so that the material on which the the cylinder acts does not come into contact with the periphery of these metallic discs 5. If, after, I erect (the peripheral surface of the cylinder has been effected, these 5 plates do not < B> 1 are not yet sufficiently set back from the periphery of the fibrous discs 3, the edge can be bevelled, as shown in fig. 1.
Not only can such a cylinder withstand wear for a long time, but also, when it is worn out, it can be repaired by simply re-dressing (its periplieric surface. repeating this operation from time to time, the duration of use can be prolonged, this cylinder almost indefinitely.
The central perforations of the 5 plates are bi selled in 9 in order to reduce to a minimum the metal surface likely to come into contact with the shaft 10. </ B> Instead of beveling these openings, as shown, 011 could give the central openings of the plates to a diameter slightly larger than the corresponding central opening of the fibrous discs 3 and corners 4. Shaft 10 is fixed. Experience has shown that the fiber-to-metal friction requires a much lower quantity of lubricant than the metal-to-metal friction of cylinders (-Ionnus.
To bring this small quantity (the lubricant to the rubbing surface 7 of the cylinder, the shaft 10 is axially drilled and this channel 13, on the one hand, mec the center of the cylinder and, on the other hand, with a Il grease cup.
Where it is not necessary to have a relatively large rubbing surface 7 , flat side plates 14 (fi-. 3) can be used. The tightening of the fibers in the center of the cylinder is obtained in this case as -in the first embodiment by means of reinforcing pieces or wedges there).
In the drawing, we have hatched the fiber discs in an oblique nianièia in a cross-section, in order to show that it is a superposition < B> d (, different disks. The direction of these hatching does not indicate the general direction of the fibers, which is. In general, perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, that is to say radial.
Slum that by compressing the central part of the cylinder very strongly, we obtain A compact, hard mass, which rotates freely on the fixed shaft without a minimum coefficient of friction, by compressing only very slightly its peripheral part, we gets a surface. active peripheral of the cylinder, exhibiting a very high coefficient of friction. This strong friction makes it possible to work with this cylinder, without it being necessary to exert strong pressure on the treated fibers.
In this way, besides reducing the risk of rupture of the treated S-fibi't, it saves -of time and force, since it is less often necessary to stop machine and that it is no longer necessary to keep the two cooperating rolls in such strong contact as in the case of cylinders with with hard active peripheral surfaces.
A by way of example, it can be indicated that the compression to which are subjected the fiber discs forming a cylinder such as that shown in fig. 1, is approximately 4 to 8 times larger for the central part of the cylinder than for its periphery.
