Description

Process for the manufacture of butyric acid. The materials which can be used for the production of the acids of the fatty series, such as formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, caproic, etc. acids are numerous: they range from vegetable waste to waste of animal origin.

In the first case, it is sawdust, bark, twigs, tree stumps, vine branches, leaves, ferns, various stems etc. ; in the second case, it is the residues from quarreling, tannery slaughterhouses, wool dewatering, etc., one can even go as far as the use of excreta of any kind.

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of butyri acid only by means of cellulosic materials, such as, for example, wood waste, sawdust, bark, stumps etc., i.e. of. materials which are found in abundance and which are inexpensive. According to this process, sweet musts obtained by hydrolysis of cellulosic materials are brought to a high degree of purity, then put into fermentation by the action of the butyric bacillus acting in symbiosis with aerobic bacteria.

For carrying out the process, it is possible, for example, to operate as follows: Wood waste is mechanically reduced to a powder as fine and as regular as possible. If necessary, the mass is leached with a stream of hot or cold water to remove unnecessary tannins, resins and soluble materials. The hydrolysis is then carried out; for this purpose, the wood powder or the pulp, which has been leached, is brought by kneading to a water content which can vary from two to five times the weight of the initial dry matter.

This water is first added with a quantity of sulfuric acid of 2 to 5% in SO # 2. The mass, made very homogeneous by trituration, is introduced into an autoclave equipped with an energetic lax uri. It goes without saying that this device must be, in all its interior parts, absolutely acid proof.

Stirring is started and 170 "steam is injected into the moving dough, ie at a pressure of 7 kg <r 7.5 kg. When this temperature and pressure are reached, the pressure is relaxed. The steam and the pressure having fallen, the appliance is emptied, which should, as far as possible, be carried out rapidly, in practice it lasts about half an hour.

The ruasse is reviewed in a titi enamelled mixer or lined on the inside with a lead envelope. It is strongly acidic. Hydrolysis has, in fact, set free and formed complex organic acids which increased the original acidity due to sulfuric acid from 15 to 25%. It is then necessary to neutralize this excess acid. Neutralization takes place in said mixer which is started.

The hot mass, vigorously crushed, is mixed with carbo nate of lime in milk or in powder in slight excess. The saturation of acids is obtained quickly. It must present an absolutely neutral reaction. Orr can substitute for titi lait chalk. lime; in this case, care must be taken (not to make the mass alca line; otherwise, at the high temperature in which the operation is carried out, there is a risk of forming soluble calcic compounds which are very troublesome for subsequent work.

The neutralized woody pulp is conducted in a methodical exhaustion apparatus of the kind used in sugar refineries for the extraction of beet juice by diffusion. Starting for example from 100 kg of sawdust, - if 25 to 30 "/" of total reducing sugar are removed by hydrolysis, one must, by a well-conducted methodical exhaustion, draw off musts of 8 to 12 "/ o sugar, with a final loss of 0.20 to 0.30 "/". The musts then pass, if necessary,

in a refrigerant with water circulation as in a distillery, to be brought to the fermentation temperature which is 40 ".

In addition to sugars, musts contain inert and harmful impurities such as gums, resins, mucilages, aldehydes, etc., which must be eliminated in order not to compromise the progress of the fermentations. To this end, these musts are sent to a mixing tank or they are added with lime milk until a clear reaction with alca line.

An abundant precipitate immediately forms which settles rapidly. Orr separates it from the liquid by filtration either on a filter press or on any other filter. When one wants to achieve an even more complete purification, orr can resort to action, which in this case is. very remarkable, animal black as it is done in sugar refinery or refinery.

This very simple method of purification is extremely advantageous. The water coefficient of the musts before purification is about 70. After purification with lime, it rises from 88 to 90 and after passing through black ani mal, it rises to 95 "/".

The fermentation of these purified musts is then carried out in the following manner. Sweet solutions (glucose or saccharose), added with current doses of mineral salts, are inoculated with the bacilli of the intestinal digestion of herbivores. We can also use the bacterial elements contained in the garden soil. After four or five successive fermentations at 40 ", the cultures are ready to act on the wood must.

The wood musts thus fermented cry sym biose contain only traces of reducing sugars. However, at the same time as the butyric acid which remains predominant, acetic acid, some propionic acid, valeric acid and sometimes also caproic acid have been formed. Orr will realize the interest of this new method by noting that 100 hg of wood provide 25 kg of total sugars for example, which by fermentation in symbiosis, give from 9 hg to 9,

5 kg of normal butyric acid and about 2 kg of acetic acid and di verse acids.

The fermented musts are then concentrated. In an evaporative apparatus of the Iiestrier type, for example, called fishing apparatus, the musts are con centrated by eliminating the lime sulphate as it precipitates. When they reach the consistency of a thick syrup, they are poured into a boiler, closed so that a vacuum can be created, and brought by heating to a dry state. They are @@, acue by a drain located on the bottom of the cooker.

The extraction of acids is then carried out as follows: In a hermetically closed apparatus, internally unassailable to acids, surmounted by a fractional distillation device, provided with a double bottom heating, a lower outlet orifice and with an energetic mixer, one introduces the salts of lime, butyrates and others, which flowed from the vacuum boiler, and at the same time one mixes with these salts a determined quantity of sulfuric or hydrochloric acid that to release the acids organic vola tils. This quantity is equivalent to the quantity of lime contained in the solution, revealed by the preliminary analysis.

It is heated by triturating and collected. by fractional distillation, acetic, propionic, bu tyric acids, etc.

Since hydrochloric and sulfuric acids are currently expensive, it is preferable to use sodium bisulphate, which constitutes a waste without value in the manufacture of nitric acid. This sodium bisulphate is dissolved in lukewarm water to saturation and mixed in an equivalent quantity with the organic salts of lime leaving the vacuum boiler and distilled as has just been said above.

This treatment makes it possible to recover the solid and gaseous by-products. 1000 kg of wood waste yielding from 25 to 30 0% of sugar leaves 700 to 750 kg of cellulosic matter which, after desiccation by pres Zion and in special ovens are used for the production of steam and for various heaters.

On the other hand, according to the equation for the conversion of reducing sugars into butyric acid:
EMI0003.0010

or for a ton of wood yielding 250 kg of sugar:.

carbonic acid 120 kg hydrogen 5.5 "This proportion of carbonic acid is high in practice because it is also necessary to reckon with the carbonic acid which comes from the decomposition of the carbonate of lime necessary for fermentation. This enormous quantity acid is easily recoverable since the fermentation is anaerobic, one operates in a closed vessel. To this end, the gases are sucked into the tanks by an exhauster ventilator and sent to boilers heated by coils and filled with a solution. of soda ash to saturation.

Bicarbonate of soda is formed which is decomposed by boiling: the carbonic acid is collected. boric that can be liquefied and housed in tubes.

Hydrogen is also collected on its side; it can also be compressed into tubes, used for heating and given any other destination.

It will be appreciated that, by the process for the production of butyric acid described above, it is also possible to additionally remove a certain proportion of acids of the fatty series such as: acetic acid, propionic acid, l valeric acid, etc., depending on the composition of the cellulosic materials subjected to the treatment.
