Description

Process for the production of resistant coverings using fiber materials. and condensation products from phenol and Forinalde-b.vd. Many attempts have been made to make apparatus made of iron or the like resistant to acid or other chemical influences -, - to make a liquid condensation product of pheriol and foraldehyde with asbestos fibers,

Mixed pulp fibers or other fibrous materials and then applied the mixture to the apparatus by spatula. The layer was then hardened by egg-heating, during which the phenol-formaldehyde condensation product changed to the infusible state.

This method has not proven itself in practice. Even when very special precautionary measures are applied and when the hardening is very slow, the formation of bubbles occurs, which makes the coating layer leaky and therefore unusable.

The new process is based on the fact that the surface to be lined is coated in a thin layer with a liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensation product, after which a fiber layer is applied to the surface that has been pretreated in this way. The condensation product is then converted into the insoluble and non-fusible state by heating, after which the fiber layer is impregnated with liquid Plieiiolforiiialdeliyd-Koiideii, and the whole is converted into the insoluble state by heating again.

A.Ian can use the condensation product both in molten form and dissolved in suitable solvents.

The fibers used are those fibers which are as indifferent as possible to chemical influences, for example asbestos fibers, also jute, linen or the like. You can use these fibers alone or in a mixture with each other, in the loose state or in the processed state as a fabric, e.g. B. asbestos felt, asbestos paper or aluminum fabric.

Example: The surface to be lined, advantageously cleaned and roughened with the aid of a sandblasting blower, is coated with the liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensation product by painting, dipping, spraying or the like. A cohesive fabric is placed on top of this, in such a way that the fiber layer lies completely smoothly on the base. Now the object to be clothed is heated with a gradual increase in temperature to around 150 degrees Celsius until the condensation product has changed to the insoluble and non-meltable state.

The fiber layer, which now sticks firmly to the base, is then impregnated in a known manner with the liquid phenolfortnaldehyde condensation product and the object is heated again until the entire condensation product has passed into the insoluble and infusible state.

Loose fibers are applied to the surface to be lined, which is coated with the phenol-formaldehyde condensation product, by sprinkling, blowing or rolling, and the loose fibers are spread out to form an even layer. In the case of complicated profiles, for example with curved or uneven surfaces, valves, narrow-lumen tubes and the like, it is advisable not to dry the papers, but to moisten them with water or another liquid that meets the following conditions on the one coated with the liquid condensation product To apply surface.

It does not matter whether you use finished layers, such as paper, cardboard, etc., or loose fibers). As a result, the layer nestles better against the curved base.

Liquids which can be volatilized at a temperature below the temperature at which the condensation product begins to transition into the infusible state are expediently used as the wetting agent. It is therefore expedient to use liquids which evaporate easily at about 50 to 60 degrees Celsius. Ordinary water is generally used as the humidifying agent.

Instead of water, you can use aqueous solutions in which substances are dissolved that reduce the ease of disintegration, which, for example, adheres to some asbestos products. Very dilute water glass solutions, for example, are suitable as such. Diluted alcoholic synthetic resin solutions can also be used.

Furthermore, such chemicals can be dissolved in your humectant and thus deposited in the pores of the fabric layer, which after the evaporation of the solution -, - means and after the impregnation have an accelerating effect on the skin process. of the phenol formaldehyde condensation product. The known organic and inorganic catalysts come into consideration as such agents.

It should be noted that when using such moistened fibrous material layers, the adhesive layer may only be cured when the moistening agent has already completely evaporated. The fibers are therefore always dried at a low temperature after gluing. Moisture occurs, for example, by dipping or spraying the fibers or fiber layers with the liquid in question.

fit of the described manner not only can uninterrupted surfaces be covered with metal or other materials, but also perforated or in some other way (broken objects, such as sieve trays of centrifuges and the like. The protective layer can also be applied to wire mesh substrates.

The cause of the blistering when using the old method and the avoidance of the same with the new working method can be explained as follows. In the old way of working, a mixture of fibers with a liquid condensation product is applied to the surface to be protected from the start, and since such mixtures are known to be almost completely impermeable to gas, the vapors produced during hardening cannot penetrate quickly enough through the hardening cladding layer, where through Bloating occurs.

With the new method, however, as already described, the production of the lining layer is carried out in two phases. The first phase consists in "that a porous fiber layer not impregnated with the phenol-formaldehyde condensation product is glued onto the substrate thinly coated with the liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensation product.

The vapors produced during hardening can pass through the porous fiber layer without any impairment, i.e. without the formation of bubbles, especially since such a thin layer of the liquid condensation product, which, as before, is only sufficient for gluing, but not for impregnating the fiber covering, is only relatively sufficient little vapors developed during hardening. The second phase, the impregnation, d. h. the pores of the fiber layer are filled using the phenol-formaldehyde condensation product after the fiber layer has already been firmly glued to the base.

During the subsequent second hardening, due to the greater thickness of the layer, considerable amounts of fumes develop. However, these are no longer able to lift up the already firmly adhering layer; rather, they escape through a uniform, slow diffusion process without being able to form bubbles.
