La fig. 1 est une coupe verticale lonai- tudinale de la. machine; La fig. 2 est une coupe transversale faite suivant la, ligne A-A de la fig. 1 et vue dans le sens de la flèche Z; La fig. 3 est une coupe transversale faite suivant la même ligne, mais vue dans le sens inverse de la flèche Z; La fig. 4 est un plan de la machine, le couvercle étant enlevé et le plateau porte- pression étant coupé horizontalement;
La fig. 5 montre des détails de porte- pression, partiellement en coupe suivant la ligne B--B de la fig. 2 et à une plus grande échelle; La fig. 6 est une élévation correspondant à la fig. 5, le porte-outil étant partiellement coupé; La fig. 7 est une élévation d'un clou ter miné; Les fig. 8, 9 et 10 représentent trois phases de la confection d'un clou;
On peut constater (surtout sur les fig. 8 et 9 complétées qui montrent trois pressions au commencement et à la fin .du laminage, la. quatrième étant enlevée) que le fil se dé- plme transversalement sur la. face active de chaque pression pendant le laminage le dé plaeement du fil sur la face active de lia pression p. étant particulièrement visible sur les fig. 8 et 9; le sens de ce déplaicement re latif est indiqué par des flèches;
Le porte-poinçon 44 est porté par un le vier 41 qui peut pivoter sur un axe 42-, une bielle 43 le relie .au levier31 commandant les pressions, de telle façon que le levier porte-poinçon se -déplace en même temps et dans le même sens que les pressions;
Une came de l'arbre à cames 3 commande un levier à galet 7.1 dont une double rampe 75, agissant sur les galets .des leviers 63, fait rapprocher les faces actives 76 des couteaux jusqu'à ce qu'elles se touchent. La pointe du clou se trouve ainsi formée par écrasement, mais la coupe n'est pas ,complète; afin de la terminer, les couteaux restent en :contact pen dant une partie du mouvement que fait le poinçon pour prendre sa position horizon tale;
En supposant que les pressions viennent d'arriver à fin de course de la,min:age (fig. 9), les mouvements se produisent dans l'ordre suivant 10 Les excentriques 16 laissent les pres sions s'écarter du fil sous l'action des res sorts; le patin serre le fil dans le tube.; ?0 Retour des pressions vers le plateau 14; le chariot pousse-fil avance le fil de la quantité nécessaire à la. confection de la pointe et de la tête;
30 Les excentriques 16 qui ont déjà coni- niencé dans le temps précédent à. rapprocher les pressions, terminent ce mouvement (fig. 10). Le fil se trouve légèrement écrasé; le patin ne le serre plus; .I0 Dcrasement du fil par les couteaux (fig. 10);
50 Les couteaux restent rapprochés pen dant que le poinçon commence à. descendre et par suite de leur déplacement par l'action du bras 7 7 et des biellettes 78 ils arrachent le clou en s'éloigmant des pressions; 6o Les couteaux s'ouvrent, le clou tombe et le poinçon est amené dans sa position hori zontale (fig. 8);
Machine for making nails. The present invention relates to a machine for manufacturing nails of poly gonal section, starting from a continuous steel wire by means of a set of shaping tools arranged to act simultaneously on several sides of the wire.
In the object of the present invention, the set of tools oscillates in the direction of the length of the wire as they are clamped thereon so as to produce a rolling action thereon.
One embodiment of a machine in accordance with this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing by way of example.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the. machine; Fig. 2 is a cross section taken along line A-A of FIG. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow Z; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the same line, but seen in the opposite direction to the arrow Z; Fig. 4 is a plan of the machine with the cover removed and the pressure plate cut horizontally;
Fig. 5 shows details of the pressure holder, partially in section taken along line B - B of FIG. 2 and on a larger scale; Fig. 6 is an elevation corresponding to FIG. 5, the tool holder being partially cut; Fig. 7 is an elevation of a finished nail; Figs. 8, 9 and 10 represent three phases of the making of a nail;
Fig. 11. is a vertical section of the thread pusher; Figs. 12 to. 15 show in detail the construction lines of the pressures.
The frame 1 forming a sealed box and provided with a cover 2 encloses the components of the machine; the lower part of these components is lubricated by bubbling in the oil which is contained in the frame, and a pump delivers the oil to the components which cannot be reached by the bubbling.
The machine comprises five groups of elements: 10 The parts carrying out the rolling (read body of the nail; 20 The parts carrying out the making of the head; 30 The components making the tip of the nail; 40 The thread pusher; 50 The camshaft 3 with its fixed pulley, its idler pulley and the flywheel.
The four pressures 4., in hardened steel, are cylindrical, fi @ ^. 5, 6, 13, 14, 15 and 16; each of them comprises: 1o La, active face c d e f and the lateral face c d le Z whose conformation will be described later; The chamfer d 7a which is formed at one end of the active face when the nail is to have a countersunk head; 30 The flat face which is parallel to the axis 0 O of the pressure and prevents it from rotating in the pressure holder 5 by being applied against a wedge 6 by the clamping screw î (fig. 6).
40 The face which is on the side opposite the active face c d e f and which bears a notch 10 cut in the. pressure.
This notch fits in the radiating grooves 9 of a stop screw 8 and prevents the latter from rotating after adjustment of the. position of the. pressure in the direction of its axis.
The. Lateral face c d le l and the flat face: have pressure on the same side.
The axis 0 0 is common to the pressure and the pressure carrier.
The center of the stopper of the plug 11 is located on this axis.
The ball 13 (fig. 5) is screwed onto an arm 12, which is integral with the pressure carrier 5 and placed relative to the axis 0 0 on the same side as the wedge 6.
The center of the ball 13 is found: 1o On a plane passing through the axis 0 0 and perpendicular to the contact plane of the. wedge 6 with the flat face of the pressure; 2o On a straight line such that DN (fis. 13, 1 5 ) passing through the center of the crapaudine 15 e1 making with the axis 0 0 an angle of approximately 4.). thirst, 45 1 - a, a being a small angle intended to keep the pressure sides strongly applied during the work against the active faces, in order to prevent the material of the nails does not enter the interstices and cause breakage.
The use of the small angle α for the same purpose is moreover already known in similar machines in which the pressures move longitudinally in an invariable plane.
The four pressure carriers 5 are arranged along the diagonals of a square C, D EF (fig. 2) and can oscillate around the respective sides of this square, or more exactly around the lines such as DN making a small angle a with the sides of said square, then that the centers of the ball joints 15 and 13 are on these lines. In these oscillatory movements, the axes of the four pressures describe portions of conical surfaces.
The position of the pressures on the plate 14 is fixed as follows: The sliders 11, in hardened steel, rest on the ball joints 15, also in hardened steel, which are fixed on eccentrics 16 pivoting in the plate 14 and serving to impart to the pressures the necessary intudinal movement.
The ball joints are. at. equal distance from the axis of the plate 14 and 90 from each other (fig. 2 and 6). Four side springs 17 have the effect of mutually maintaining the pressure on their ball joints and their side faces against their active faces. Wedges 18 acting on rods 19 serving to relax the springs for disassembling the pressure carriers and to stretch them during assembly.
Four spring: longitudinal 20 attachments to the bottom of a slide 29 are hooked on the side opposite to the pressure arm 12 with respect to the axis 0 0 of the latter. They hand hold each pressure applied against a respective rod 2l and the ball of the pressure carrier arm 7 3 in its frame 22 (fig. 1 and 5).
The pressures being thus mounted on the plate, the lateral face of each of them must have by construction an inclination on the plane (the 1a, wedge 6 such that its edge rests exactly on the active face of the neighboring pressure at any position of, pressure> during their reciprocating movements The faces being suitably machined, it will be the same for all the positions.
The rods 21 are terminated by two ball joints, one of which rests on a clamp 23, made of hardened steel, fixed to the pressure carrier and the other on a clamp 24 fixed to the bottom of the slide 29.
A pin 25 fixed to the housing of this .dernière crosses the connecting rod 21 with play and prevents it from falling when the pressures are removed.
The sliders 22 are placed on their supports 26 (so as to maintain the centers of the ball joints 13 of the pressure arms in the plane of the eccentric ball joints 15. On the rods 27 of the sliders 22 (fig. 5 and 6) are fixed washers 28 which prevent these baskets from falling when the pressures are released.
These rods pass through a hole in the support 26 with sufficient play so as not to impede the movements of the sliders 22 when the pressures approach or move away from the axis of the plate.
On the slide 29 is fixed a key 30 sliding in a groove of the corresponding bore of the plate 14 and preventing it from turning. This slider is connected to a double-acting lever 31 by two twin connecting rods 32 placed to, right and left of the slider wire guide tube 33, which crosses the axes of the connecting rods, the upper arm of the double-acting lever 31 and the slide 29, to which it is attached.
The lever 31. pivots about an axis 34 and carries two arms, one to the right, the other to the left of the camshaft 3. The rollers carried by these arms are actuated by two separate cams, one producing the movement of work and the other the return of pressure.
The work is done @ quan, d these move away from the plateau. On return, at the end of the stroke, the .coulisseau 29 is in contact with a stop 35 fixed to the plate and supporting the shock which results from the punching of the head of the nail.
The pressure eccentrics 16 are sy metric two by two with respect to the plane P P (FIG. 2).
The roller levers 36 integral with these eccentrics are controlled two by two by the same double ramp 37 which moves parallel to the axis of the plate and they are returned by two springs 95. These double ramps 37 are connected by connecting rods. blades 38 to the arms of a double-acting lever 39, integral with a shaft which pivots around its axis 40, and which carries two roller arms, one to the right of the other to the left - of the camshaft 3.
These arms are controlled by two separate cams, producing the movement of the double ramps, one in one direction in the other.
As a result of the oscillation of the eccentrics 16, the ball joints 15 bring them together. pressures 5 of the axis of the plate 14 before the rolling work so that they can roll the body of the nail to the dimensions provided. When the rolling is finished, the pressures move away so that the wire is not dragged by them on their return to the plate.
Three types of square-section nails can thus be obtained: l0 Nails whose faces are plane and parallel to the longitudinal axis; 20 Nails whose faces are flat and form the same -angle with the axis of the nail (nails thinned towards the point); .
30 Nails with rounded or hollow faces, instead of being flat as for the first two types.
Proper nail fabrication requires two pressure conditions.
l0 By its rotational movement, the active face e d e f, on which the wire rests, must be shaped so as to give the desired shape to the face @du-nail; 2o The edge c d of the lateral face c d 7c l must during the rotation remain constantly in (, ontact with the active face of the neighboring pressure in order to avoid burrs.
To achieve the first -of these conditions, the active face c cl ef is generated by an arc of a circle 3'IQN, rotating from d to c around from the, right D N. The center R of this arc is located at. the intersection of lines DN and IL; I is the center of the square CDE F and IL is 45 with D N. < / I>
For the first type to- nail, the radius of the generating arc M Q N remains constant from d to c and the generated surface is spherical.
For the -second type, the radius: increases from d to c in proportion to la. angular value of its rotation.
For the third type, it is easy to understand that it is possible, by suitable variations in the radius of the generator, to obtain convex or hollow faces.
To achieve the second condition, the lateral face cd le, Z is generated by a straight line na n moving along a curve icilenfiqu-e at . that of the active face & - the pressure a: dja.cente and parallel to the, straight line I L.
Let us consider (fig. 15 ) , two pressures close to p1 p., the lateral face @of lia. first being applied exactly on the active face. of the second: the axes 0 O of one and the other are in the same plane.
For the first type of nail, if we rotate (the the same quantity of them presses p1 p. Ka. Around their respective ball joints 11, the pressure p1 will turn around of the line CR, its axis 0 0, making with that-, -i an invariable angle,
since the point R is the center of a sphere on which this pressure rests and the lateral face of p ,, will remain in contact with 1 <a. active face pn, despite lie, lateral displacement of the latter.
It will be the same for all the presions and that also for the other two nails lyhes, because the edge d c of the. pressure?) ,. being placed in contact with the active face of the neighboring pressure, each point harmed the composing it can be:
considered as applied to a sphere with a radius equal to that of the , generator corresponding to the point of contact and will behave as in the previous case.
It can be seen (especially in the completed FIGS. 8 and 9 which show three pressures at the start and at the end of the rolling, the fourth being removed) that the wire unfolds transversely on the. active face of each pressure during rolling the displacement of the wire on the active face of the pressure p. being particularly visible in FIGS. 8 and 9; the direction of this relative displacement is indicated by arrows;
the thread consequently has a tendency to entrain the. pressure by friction and detaching it from that with which it is in contact; especially towards the end of the operation this inconvenience is avoided, thanks to the arm 12 which prevents it from rotating freely around its longitudinal axis. Organs making the head.
The punch holder 44 is carried by a lever 41 which can pivot on an axis 42-, a connecting rod 43 connects it to the lever 31 controlling the pressures, such that the punch holder lever moves at the same time and in the same direction as the pressures;
the punch holder 44, which can oscillate on the lever 41 around .db the axis of the journals 45, contains a cylindrical rod 46 on which the punch 47 is screwed, made of hardened steel, blocked by a nut.
A return spring 48 is also enclosed in the punch holder to bring the punch back inside.
The punch holder sr moves gently in a slideway 49 which maintains it laterally when the head is pushed back. The oscillating movement of the punch holder around the journals 45 is obtained by means of twin connecting rods 50, an angled lever 51, a connecting rod 52 and a lever. double-acting 53 (with, two rollers, controlled by two cams of the camshaft 3 (fil-. 1 and 4).
These cams are shaped de such that they keep the punch holder tilted (as in fig. 1) when the punch is not working and horizontal when it is to form the head; the punch holder is in the latter case in contact with a stop 54.
Ballast at this time that the punch is pushed by a punch plunger 55 wedged by a lever 56 and its roller, a connecting rod 57, a single (or double) lever ef fect 58 with a cam (or two cams) of the camshaft 3. The return of these parts is produced by springs 59 and 60.
Organs for making the tip of the nail.
A flap 61 oscillating around the axis of the journals 62, supports knife levers 63 on which are fixed two knife holders 64, which house two knives 65 intended to cut the rolled nail while giving the shape to its point.
The two levers 63 are symmetrical with respect to the axial plane X-X of the machine. Each lever carries: two journal segments 66 having a common axis, one housed in a bore of the shutter 61, the other in a bore of a bearing 6 7 fixed on this shutter. The two journal segments are bored so that, when the levers 63 are mounted on the shutter 61, a cylindrical pin 68 engaged between them: they hold them without play in their place.
These two levers thus pivot on the same axis: In the knife holder 64, a screw 69 makes it possible to adjust the position of the knives in the direction of their axes. As with the pressures, the knife has a notch and the adjustment screw is provided with ridges to prevent the latter from loosening during work. A screw 70 presses on a rod 71, one end of which follows the shape of a triangular groove cut on the rod: cylindrical of the knife, and orients it in a suitable manner.
Two ramps 72 fixed on the knife holders are cut in such a way that the sides of the punch holder 44 can move the knives apart so as to avoid any contact: of the punch with the latter when it takes the horizontal position, in the case where the return springs 73 do not act quickly enough on the levers 63.
On the other hand, with the aim of facilitating the penetration of the nails between the knives, a fork 96, the opening of which is convergent as indicated in FIGS. 8 to 10, is fixed, in front of the knives, either to the void 61, or to a drop duct 79 carried by the latter.
A cam of the camshaft 3 controls a roller lever 7.1 of which a double ramp 75, acting on the rollers .des levers 63, brings the active faces 76 of the knives closer together until they touch each other. The point of the nail is thus formed by crushing, but the cut is not complete; in order to complete it, the knives remain in: contact during part of the movement made by the punch to take its horizontal position;
a lever arm 77 of the punch holder 44 then moves the knives away from the pressures by means of twin rods 78 at teled to the shutter 61,: and thus tear the nail from the rest of the wire by stretching the metal: which does not was not cut; the sharpness of the point is thus: increased.
When opening, the knives abandon the nail and the awl takes the horizontal position to crush the head: of the next nail. The finished nail falls into a conduit 79 attached to the shutter 61 and leaves the machine through a tube 80 attached to the frame.
A tab 81 fixed to the punch holder 44 prevents the elous from jumping out of the duct.
A carriage 82 guided by a slide 83 is connected by a lever 85 and a connecting rod 84 to the lever 31 so that this carriage 82 is moved in the opposite direction to the pressures. Its stroke is regulated by the thickness of a changeable wedge 86, which has the effect of lowering more or less the axis 87 on which the carriage lever oscillates.
A wire guide tube 88, frozen to the carriage, penetrates gently into the slider wire guide tube 33; a hole is made there for the passage of a pad 89 serving to tighten the wire.
A cam 90 which is integral with the shaft 40 is actuated by the intermediary of a lever u1 and connecting rods 92 the shoe lever 9 "so as to pull the latter when the eccentrics of the pressures bring them closer together and they no longer pull it when the pressures move apart.
In the first case, the effect of the spring 94 on the pad 89 being canceled, the latter no longer clamps the wire; in the second case, the opposite takes place; it follows that the wire is there by the pad during rolling and tightened during the return, pressures.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The movements of the various components are all determined by the cams carried by the shaft 3.
Assuming that the pressures have just reached the end of the, min: age stroke (fig. 9), the movements occur in the following order 10 The eccentrics 16 leave the pressures s 'move away from the thread under the action of the resources; the pad clamps the wire in the tube .; ? 0 Return of the pressures to the plate 14; the thread pusher carriage advances the thread the amount necessary for the. making the point and the head;
30 The eccentrics 16 that have already reached in the previous time at. bring the pressures closer together, complete this movement (fig. 10). The wire is slightly crushed; the pad no longer grips it; .I0 Crushing of the wire by the knives (fig. 10);
50 The knives stay together as the punch begins to. descend and as a result of their displacement by the action of the arm 7 7 and the rods 78 they tear the nail away from the pressures; 6o The knives open, the nail falls and the punch is brought into its horizontal position (fig. 8);
70 The punch crushes the, head and begins. move back; 80 This recoil continues as the punch rises and pressure rolls the body of the nail, pulling the wire (fig. 9). The operation is then reproduced as above.
It should be noted that the removal of the pressure-holders is quick and easy since it suffices to release their toads and their ball joints from each other; the connecting rods? 1 then remain <attached to the slide? 9. It is therefore convenient to adjust the position of the pressures and to carry out maintenance or replacement thereof. The assembly of the knives also gives the same ease of disassembly and maintenance.
Note: that the. form shown in, fig. 7, in which the body is bent towards the middle of its length, has the advantage of giving the nail great rigidity and preventing it from flexing under the blow of the hammer. Obtaining nails of this shape is easy since it suffices to give the active face of the pressures an appropriate curvature; such a result is not possible with conventional machines in which the pressures must successively hammer several portions of the length of the nail.
It goes without saying that in the event that the shape of the nails to. obtain will be different from that shown, we can vary the shape and number of pressures. In particular, the shape of the latter and that of the punch could be modified so as to produce round heads or in a drop of tallow or in a diamond point, etc. or at. give the body of the nails a star section, etc.
Without departing from the invention, it will be possible to vary the -devices for mounting and controlling the tools described above, for example mounting the pressure-holders on real axes instead of ball joints, etc.
