Process <the manufacture of fuel agglomerates. The present invention relates to the manufacture of combustible agglomerates, in all forms, such as briquettes, perforated or non-perforated balls, etc. resulting from the compression of any dust or fuel particles, such as coal, anthracite, lignite, peat, etc. with a binder or binder, such as, for example, coal tar pitch, asphaltic bitumen or petroleum pitch, or any other binder of this kind.
In general, in the usual manufacturing processes, the binder is added in a suitable proportion to the fuel dust, and the mixture is introduced into a heated mixer, for example with steam, to determine the melting of the pitch. , bitumen or other chosen binder, the very homogeneous paste then being brought to the agglomeration presses.
According to the usual manufacturing processes, the amount of binder used is generally from 8 to 10 0% in order to obtain a degree of cohesion varying between 60 to 80%. The degree of cohesion is measured by means of a device called cohesor, universally used in all mines, railways and shipping companies etc. This apparatus comprises a sheet metal drum lined internally with four iron angles following the generatrices of the drum cylinder.
We put in this drum 50 kg of pieces of agglomerates whose cohesion we want to determine and the drum is rotated for a minute at a rate of one revolution per second. The pieces of fuel contained in the drum bounce against each other and on the angles of the drum, gradually breaking up. After the minute has elapsed, the fuel is taken out of the drum and screened on a grid whose spacings correspond to half of the pieces introduced into the drum.
The fragments which do not pass through the grid are weighed and the cohesion is evaluated as a percentage as follows: Let P be the weight of the fuel introduced into the drum and p the weight of the fragments remaining on the grid, the cohesion in / where is

The object of the present invention is to make the manufacture of combustible agglomerates more economical, in the sense that it allows, with the same qualities of fuels and the same binders, to achieve the same degree of cohesion of the agglomerates ob required, by using a smaller percentage of binder, which results in a reduction in the cost price of the agglomerates,
because of the high price of the binders currently used, such as in particular, coal pitches or petroleum.
For this purpose, according to the process forming the object of the present invention, is added to the binder before it is mixed with the fuel dust, a material capable of producing, under the action of heat, a With a large evolution of gas, this mixture is added to the fuel dust and the mixture is heated to give off said gas. Such a material is, for example, sodium bicarbonate which can be used in the form of crystals or in the form of a solution in water. It gives off carbonic acid under the action of heat.
The decomposition of baking soda is probably accelerated by the phenol which is formed in small quantities on heating of the binder.
The mixture of said material and binder can be added to the fuel dust, before the introduction or at the time of the introduction of the latter into the mixer. Preferably, the addition of said material to the binder will take place, for example, in an endless screw pitch metering apparatus, the necessary quantity being poured automatically or by hand into the metering unit, in a continuous or intermittent manner. , as the pitch is fed by the screw on the apron bringing the fuel to agglomerate in the mixer. By heating the whole, from 801 C the binder is made fluid, then liquid by heat and the material likely to release gases produces under the action of heat a significant release of gas .
Tests have shown that as a result of this release the binder is evenly distributed throughout the mass. It is this uniform distribution of the binder which allows a very significant saving in binder.
As an indication and comparison, with the current processes for the agglomeration of fuel dust, to obtain 1000 kg of agglomerates, having a degree of cohesion of about 60 to 80%, about 910 </ B is used. > hg of dust and 90 hg of binder.
In the process described, it is possible, in order to obtain the same quantity of agglomerates, having the same degree of cohesion, to use about 945 kg of dust and 55 kg of binder, which achieves a saving of about 35 hg of binder per ton. of agglomerates, for a minimal amount of baking soda; it suffices to use 1 kg for a ton of agglomerates.
