Description

5 à. 11 représentent schémati- quement et à titre d'exemple, plusieurs for mes d'exécution de l'appareil suivant l'in vention.

A method and apparatus for making pearl-looking materials. In Swiss patent N 107045 he has. has been described a general process for the manufacture of materials of pearly, pearl or shimmering appearance, based on the systematic orientation of particles of flattened shape, capable of reflecting light, such as essence of the orient for example, incorporated in a mass of transparent plastic.

Various embodiments have been proposed in said patent, such as: stretching, twisting, extruding, rolling, passing through a die, ete., That is to say, in general any means capable of causing in the mass the formation of currents or fluid veins, parallel to the axis of which the particles are oriented.

The present invention a. for object a process for the manufacture of plastics with a pearly appearance, according to which a systematic orientation of shiny particles of flattened shape included in said material is produced by subjecting the latter to a stretching of an amplitude such that the current created by this stretching acts on all the shiny particles and arranges them parallel to the surface of the solid formed by the stretching.

This process is based on the finding that, when the amplitude of the stretching is sufficient, it has the effect of stressing all the shiny particles by straightening them parallel to each other, or at least parallel to the surface. of the solid obtained by stretching. 1 ï We thus obtain masses which offer a pearly appearance, uniform over their entire surface, due to the regularity of the orientation of the particles included. These. masses little wind advantageously and with some precautions described below to be used as elements for obtaining blocks clans a conventional block press, blocks which can be subsequently sliced using the usual technique in sheets of suitable thickness.

The invention also comprises an apparatus for carrying out said method.

In the accompanying drawing, figs. 1 to 4 represent two usual block presses and the effect they produce on plastic masses and figs. 5 to. 11 represent schematically and by way of example, several embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention. , Figs. 1 and 2 are vertical sections of a block press containing, for fig. 1, two plastic blades, oriented flat, incompletely filling the inside of the press; for fig. 2, the two blades in question welded into a single block by the action of a suitable pressure on the press udder.

Figs. 3 and 4 are dirty cross sections from another block press. Fig. 3 re has a mass .de plastic material not yet oriented, placed under the piston; fig. 4, the same mass which, after applying pressure, completely fills the available space.

The broken lines indicate in the various figures the general orientation of the shiny particles in the mass.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view, with vertical section, of a press suitable for stretching the plastic mass according to the process according to the invention.

The plastic mass whose solid particles have any orientation, escapes, under the influence of compression, through the side slit. This results in the formation of a flow stream which orients the particles parallel to each other forming a blade 6.

Fig. 6 is a view in plan and in section of a plastic blade of oval section, obtained by stretching; fig. 6 shows the regular and parallel arrangement of the shiny particles incorporated therein.

Fig. 7 shows the effect of crushing a blade of oval section, obtained by stretching according to the process, between the two plates of a press, until a blade of uniform thickness is obtained; particles escaping at the edges no longer remain parallel to each other, but nevertheless remain parallel "to the surface.

Figs. 8 to 11 relate to a second embodiment according to which the oriented plastic material is obtained in the form of a tube before being cut into strips by section of this tube along its length.

As has been explained in patent 107045, it is possible to obtain a block of material with a pearly, pearly or shimmering appearance, by piling the properly oriented elements in a block press and putting them under pressure. heat and pressure to form a single block which will later be sliced. However, as can be seen in FIG. 1, voids exist and it happens that, when the pressure is applied, these voids are filled by the flow of the compressed plastic mass and that currents are thus formed directing the shiny particles parallel to their direction, that is to say in a sense that makes them: invisible.

The same phenomenon would occur in other cases if, as indicated in figs. 3 and 4, an attempt was made to achieve orientation by compressing a plastic mass, between the two plates of a press. The crushing resulting from this operation would produce orientation only over a reduced extent.

To carry out the process according to the invention, it is possible, as already stated, to employ a very simple means which consists in forcing the plastic mass, brought by heating to the desired degree of plasticity, to pass through a slit. where it comes out as a blade.

Any press fitted with a suitable die can be used for this purpose. The particularly simple apparatus, of which FIG. 5 gives a diagram, consists of a block press in the walls of which is provided a rectangular orifice for mant slit or die. This slot or die may have a width of 1 to 2 cm, for example, or more if necessary. As for his. length, it is advisable that it be sufficient to produce a single piece blade capable of being cut into rectangles of sufficient area to completely fill the section of the block press used for the subsequent con fection of the block intended for. be sliced.

As the plastic mass escapes from the slot in the form of a continuous blade, it is necessary, to fulfill this condition, that the length of the slot is at least equal to the smallest dimension of the block press, it is that is, to its width. The importance of this precaution was explained above in order to avoid the marginal disorientation of the plastic mass in the block press (see fig. 1 and 2). .

By exerting a suitable pressure on the piston, the material is forced out of the apparatus in the form of a blade in which, due to the current produced in the mass, all the shiny particles are oriented perfectly parallel to the surface. surface of this blade.

It should be noted that to obtain a surface with a uniform appearance, it is necessary to take certain precautions: a) First of all, it is important not to break up the particles and for this it is advisable to have a sufficient mass. plastic, which is achieved by raising the temperature sufficiently.

The mass did. There is no need, however, to be very soft, because the particles are not broken by very high pressure, but by too sudden movements. It is perfectly possible to stretch a very hard mass, without breaking the crystals which are included therein, provided that a sufficiently slow and smooth stretching, that is to say perfectly regular, is carried out. There is therefore no need to provide an excess of solvent which, besides being expensive, can even be harmful, since the blade 6 produced by the flow of the plastic mass. through the slot 5 would tend to curl, to deform during the evaporation of the solvent. In this case the shiny particles could be displaced and one would not obtain the uniform orientation which one proposes precisely to achieve.

  b) It is also necessary to avoid making the noise. material through a slit whose edges are irregular, because these irregularities cause the formation of eddies which result in the blade produced by rectilinear silences along which the particles are oriented obliquely to the surface. These furrows persist indefinitely, we would find them in the form of non-shimmering straight lines when slicing a block made up of such elements.

For this reason, it is therefore necessary to provide an absolutely polished slot and whose longitudinal longitudinal profile is moreover adapted to the perfect flow of the material, if one wants to achieve a uniform fluid stream. We will establish this profile by experience, taking inspiration from what we know about the laws of flow of fluids. From this point of view it is possible to reproduce with advantage the profile usually given to the sprinkler nozzles in order to obtain a perfectly regular jet.

  c) Finally, the blade obtained by stretching will be absolutely uniform only if the distribution of the oriental essence or of the other shiny particles incorporated in the. plastic mass is very regular and if all the mass is, at the time of forcing through the die, at exactly the same degree of plasticity.

In the event that the too small dimensions of the press used do not make it possible to immediately produce a blade having the exact width of the block, which is essential so that the sliced sheets do not present a solution of continuity, we can firstly, with a narrower die, produce a narrower blade, but thicker and of ovular section for example. This still hot and therefore plastic blade will be subjected to the action of a black laminate, or better still a press, in order to bring it to the exact dimension of the block press.

This compression exerted on a blade of which all the particles are oriented parallel to the direction of stretching will obviously have the consequence of placing them obliquely with respect to the original direction of stretching due to the currents produced in the mass, but they will nevertheless remain parallel 'on the surface, which is the essential condition for obtaining a sheet having a pearly appearance, that is to say without apparent waviness. As a variant of the stretching process in the form of a blade, it is possible to envisage stretching the plastic mass through an orifice of annular shape but of a diameter such that the circumference of said die is equal to the width of the block that it is proposed to constitute in order to cut it into sheets.

It suffices in fact to split this tube following a generator to obtain a blade oriented flat.

Fig. 10 shows schematically how the tube 13 thus produced, cut at 14 by a sharp tool, not shown, results in a blade 15.

In practice, this process has some drawbacks due to the fact that the large diameter tube can collapse or that its pa king can warp, which would lead to disorientation of the shiny particles. It may happen (see fig. 11) that the tenons 18 holding the central stud 17 cause the formation of eddies which are reflected, on the tube obtained, by lines of orientation dice following the generatrices corresponding to the tenons. At the level of these lines, the shiny particles are arranged perpendicularly to the surface of the tube; they are therefore invisible. As a result, they are reflected on the developed blade by non-shimmering trails.

To avoid this drawback, it is possible either to eliminate the tenons and to maintain the central stud by an axial device or, more simply, to give the tenons a receding profile avoiding the formation of eddies.

Apart from the stretching means described above, of relatively simple execution, with the current equipment used in the plastics industry, slightly modified, one can imagine other machines capable of giving comparable results. rables.

It should be understood that the above manufacturing process is applicable without essential change, regardless of the shiny particles of flattened shape used: oriental essence, mica or other natural or artificial crystals, metallic powders, 'a- luminium, bronze, etc., and whatever the plastic material used: celluloid, cellulose acetate, products known under the names of galalith, bakelite, etc. or the like and substitutes.
