Description

Process for hardening high-speed steel. It is known that when high-speed steel is openly heated in an ordinary forge or in any furnace after hardening, a more or less thick, soft zone occurs after hardening, which has to be removed by grinding.

This phenomenon, which is the cause of high consumption of expensive high-speed steels, is particularly noticeable in the case of shaped pieces, complicated parts, and such objects that are brought to the exact size after hardening by grinding and also have the highest hardness on the surface have to.

So far, one has helped oneself in such cases by putting the pieces in a box made of sheet iron, respectively. a heat-resistant alloy wrapped in charcoal, coke breeze or fire extinguishers - wrapping in paper and heating the workpieces in a well-sealed box is also common in some places - brought the whole thing to hardening temperature, then the items out of the box took out and scared off. This procedure gave acceptable results unless the temperature was increased above 1200.

In addition, one had to take painstaking care to ensure that the pieces were removed and quenched as soon as they were at hardening temperature. If you ignored these points and increased the temperature or if you extended the heating time, the edge zones quickly carbonized and melted, as this reduced the melting point far below the favorable hardness temperature. First and foremost, corners and edges were drawn with passion. Such a steel was referred to as "burnt" in the hardening shop; it was generally believed that the hardening temperature had gone too high.

The inconveniences cannot be avoided by heating the workpieces in extinguishers either. Because if the fire extinguishers still contain unburned coal, at least local charring will result. However, if the extinguisher is practically free of flammable constituents, the pieces are decarburized and, in addition, they sinter together at higher temperatures and baked together with the objects to be hardened.

It often happens that significant melting is not observed, despite the fact that the surface is more or less carburized. In such a steel, strong tensions arise during hardening due to the inhomogeneous composition, which can give rise to the formation of cracks and flaking during later operation or even during hardening. In addition, the cutting edge does not resist, but breaks easily.

In order to get around these inconveniences as much as possible, one was forced to carry out the hardening of high-speed steel with painstaking care and to pay close attention to the points mentioned above.

Even after the modern cobalt high-performance high-speed turning steels have recently found their way into practice, which require a hardening temperature of up to 1380 C, the old method was continued to work on pieces that had to be teased. However, since these steels achieve their maximum performance only after hardening at the highest temperature just below their melting point, their use in such cases is only a useless waste of money.

The method forming the subject of the invention avoids all these inconveniences and makes: the hardening of high-speed steel far more independent of the reliability of the hardener. This new method consists in the fact that the pieces to be hardened are packed in at least one carbide finely divided form before heating and remain packed therein during the heating. Since carbide in finely divided form is to be understood as a granular and powdery carbide.

For example, a silicon carbide in granular form can be used for hardening high-speed steel, whereby the temperature can be brought to 1380 ° C. without the steel piece being damaged or scorched.

When working according to the new process, it is possible to achieve good protection against scaling without significant carburization, since a weakly reducing atmosphere is formed. There is no caking of the packing material, and the latter can be reused as often as required, so that the consumption of such material is small.

If the reducing effect of silicon carbides that is often used decreases too much, a small amount of a more easily oxidizable substance, e.g. B. graphite powder are added. While charcoal and quenching are poor conductors of heat, the carbides, especially silicon carbides, conduct heat very well.

When the new method is carried out, the result is a uniform, rapid glow through the vessels. substantial fuel savings and a considerable increase in production. In addition, the steels hardened according to the new process show very favorable properties, since the small carbide dots are hardly formed into larger complexes due to the short heating time.
