A process for obtaining an elastic material which can be vulcanized. The present invention relates to a process for obtaining an elastic material which can be vulcanized and which can be used as a rubber substitute. According to this process, petroleum is first treated with an oxidizing agent, for example nitric acid or sodium peroxide in the presence of soda lime or sodium acetate. The liquid thus obtained is neutralized.
The neutral product is distilled several times with rosin, and the product of the distillation is treated with an aqueous alkali; it is left to stand, and after removing the lower aqueous layer, rubber is added and the product is treated (so as to obtain a syrupy liquid, from which, by precipitation by means of a precipitating agent, the elastic material is obtained which can be vulcanized The elastic mass produced by the precipitation can be kneaded to release it from the precipitant.
An exemplary embodiment is given in the following: 1250 cm 3 of nitric acid of specific weight 1.4 are allowed to act on 5 liters of American petroleum for at least four days, by mixing the nitric acid with the petroleum. Reheating is not necessary.
The liquid thus treated is stirred with water in a stirring apparatus until the water remains clear. Then stirred again a few times with a solution of sodium hydroxide.
The liquid separated from the aqueous part is mixed with 700 g of rosin in pieces in a distillation boiler precluded by a cooler. Distilled very carefully in said distillation boiler, at a temperature of about 2500 C.
After having distilled 4 liters, let, #, cool the boiler and introduce the 4 liters distilled again, close the boiler and distill 4.5 liters again at a temperature of about 2500C after having again introduced 700 gr of rosin into the boiler. The residue that was in the boiler remains in it. The boiler is again allowed to cool and the 4.5 liters distilled and 600 g of rosin are added to the residue and the mixture is closed again and 5 liters are then distilled at 8600 C. The residue being in the. The boiler forms a hard resin which can be used for lacquers in a manner analogous to copal.
The 5 liters resulting from the distillation are, mixed with 1-, 25 liters of water and 125 gr of caustic soda, introduced into an autoclave. The temperature is slowly raised to 1560 C and the pressure to 5 or 6 atmospheres and this temperature and pressure is maintained for one hour. It is then left to stand until the boiler has cooled, the contents are poured into a black stirring funnel; three layers are formed. The top layer is a yellowish liquid, the second layer is syrupy material, the third is water waste.
The upper and middle layers are used together or separately; it is these which contain the products capable of being transformed into an elastic material which can be vulcanized.
5 liters of the. top layer in a stirred container and treated, for example, with 2 kg of glacial vinegar or with 1.25 kg of formaldehyde, in two parts, namely: in a first part, 1 kg is added to 5 liters of ice-cold wine (or 0.6 kg of formaldehyde), the boiler is closed and heated to about 400 C for one hour, stirring constantly.
The boiler is then allowed to cool, another 1 kg of ice-cold vinegar (or the rest of formaldehyde) is added, and, as a starter, 7% = 850 g of crude rubber of rubber in pancakes, and this mixture is heated in stirring constantly, for about 8 hours without exceeding 600C. This treatment provides a syrupy material from which the vulcanizable elastic material is separated by precipitation.
This precipitation is done by. pure acetone (or by alcohol) in an amount of 4 parts by weight for one part by weight of the. my own. The separated elastic mass is then kneaded, rolled into a thin layer and then air dried, for example on aluminum sheet.
