I et 2.
Machine for cutting dies and the like. This invention relates to the maobi "e for the size of dies and the like.
This machine can in particular be set up for the. manufacture of certain ma trices used in the manufacture of flexible metal pipes:
of the type comprising a metallic tape coiled medium. In such a pipe, the edges of the tape are set so as to engage each other, which is avoided by passing them through dies, and the u sure to which these dies are subjected in service is so intense that it is necessary to replace them frequently with new ones.
The shape of the dies is peculiar and somewhat complicated and, until now, it was necessary to manufacture them by hand, which involved considerable expense due to the precision required for the shape and dimensions. . The replacement of dies in this manufacture of flexible metal pipes therefore resulted in high maintenance costs.
Lti, machine according to the invention is cara.été- rioéo in that it comprises, in combination, a shaft mounted to rotate and move along its axis, a mandrel mounted at one end of this shaft and destiny (, to carry the workpiece, a cam mounted at the other end, a reproducing finger, a spring arranged to press the cam against this-finger & such that the cam and the finger cooperate to impart longitudinal movement to the shaft during its rotation, a device for advancing the finger radially across the face of the cam,
the tool arranged to be held in a cutting position relative to the workpiece held in the mandrel, and means for moving the control device of the reproducing finger and the tool.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention, established for the size of the dies employed in the manufacture of flexible metal pipes; however, it is obvious that this invention could also be applied to obtaining other parts and that it is therefore not limited to the particular application in question.
In this drawing: Fig. 1 is a side view of the machine; Fig. 2 is a plan with partial tear-off of certain parts; Fig. 3 is a side view with partial vertical section of a fragment of the machine and shows how to mount a blank die in this machine; Fi-. 4 is a partially broken end view of the parts of FIG. 3;
Fig. 5 and 6 are end views showing a die after the first operation and the final operation have been performed on it by the machine; Fig. 7 and 8 are side views of the die shown in fi; g. 5 and 6, looking in the direction of arrows 7 and 8, respectively; Fi-. 9 and 10 are side views of the.
matrix shown in fig; 5 and -6, in rer <d t dorisés ëns' e respectively. The machine shown: is provided with a base 15 having near its opposite ends - slides 16, 17 arranged to support: carriages 18 and 19, respectively. Between the slides are two supports 20 bolted to the base and constituting bearings supporting a shaft 21.
On the shaft 21 is mounted between the supports 20 a drive pulley 22 which is assembled tongue and groove with the shaft @ so that the latter can slide axially in its bearings. At the right end of the shaft (looking at Figs. 1 and 2), there is provided a plate or mandrel 23 which is preferably screwed onto the shaft as shown in fig. 3. At the opposite end of the shaft 21 is attached a cam plate 24.
A helical compression spring 25 surrounds the shaft 21 between the plate 24 and the adjacent support 20 and normally biases the shaft to the left of it. I and 2. A stop screw 2'6, which passes through a tapped hole in a support 27 fixed to the left-hand end of the machine, allows the cam to be moved away from a reproducing finger 46, against the action @du spring 25, during periods of adjustment or at any desired instants.
The stop screw 2'6 is provided with a handwheel 2'8 with the help of which its position can be adjusted in the support 27.
A feed screw 29 mounted in pallets 30 and 31 provided respectively at the front and at the rear of the machine makes it possible to advance the carriage 18 transversely to the base 15. This screw carries a handle handle. noeuvre 32 at its front end and, near this handle, a graduated collar 33 which -constitutes a:
device allowing -the determine the angular movement of the. vis -in advance. On the carriage 18 is mounted an auxiliary carriage 34 which supports a tool holder column 35 intended to support a tool 36. The auxiliary carriage 34 is similar to a lathe spool and is provided with a device for bringing together and 'move column 35 away from the tree and from the. make it move transversely to the shaft, the movement # al being controlled by a handle 37 and the longitudinal or parallel movement to the part being controlled by a handle 38.
At the opposite end of the machine is mounted a feed screw 39 extending transversely to the base 15 - and supported by bearings 40 and 41 provided respectively at the front and at the rear of the machine. The role of this screw is to advance the Chariat 19 transversely to the machine. Like the feed screw 29, the feed screw 39 is provided with a handle 42 and a graduated collar 43. From the horizontal face of the carriage 19 rises a column 44 which supports a collar. 4-5 with the reproductive finger 46.
The feed screws 29 and 39 are arranged to receive rotational movements having a determined relationship between them. For this purpose, the. feed screw 29 carries, at its rear end, an angle wheel 47 which meshes with an angle pinion 48 mounted on a shaft 49. The shaft 49 is supported by brackets 50 and 51 fixed at the rear of the base 15, at its left end, this shaft carries an angle wheel 52 which meshes with an angle pin 53 fixed to the rear end of the screw: in advance 39.
In this way, when the screw 29 turns, the screw 39 also turns, but at a higher speed, due to the gear ratio of the transmission connecting the two screws. Consequently, for any given transverse movement of the carriage 18, the carriage 19 will perform a corresponding amplified movement. It will also be noted that the feed screws 29 and 39 turn in the opposite direction to one another and as each of these screws is threaded. -right, one of the avaaice carts, while the other moves back.
The form -of the dies that this machine is intended to cut is shown -in the fi-. 6, 8 and 10. It is of course understood, however, that although the machine is specially established for the production of dies (such as this, it can be used to cut different dies.
To establish the particular die shape shown, one can proceed as follows: The blank -de the die is a hollow cylindrical member which laterally has a slot 55. This slot goes from the. facing face of the matrix at a point close to the base or opposite face of this matrix. One of the walls, 56, of the slot 55 is located in a radial plane passing through the axis of the cylinder, while the opposing wall, 57, forms an approximate right angle with the wall 56. The finished die has a stepped helical cutting face and comprises two narrow helical slices arranged along the same axis.
The inner edge 58 protrudes beyond the outer edge 59 and is bounded internally by the inner peripheral wall of the hollow blank, and externally by a cylindrical wall 60. The pitch of the helical slices is to the right. In other words, the wafers advance from the wall 56 to the wall 57. However, the outer helical wafer 59 has or no steeper inclination than the inner helical wafer 58 and a conoidal wall 60 '. connects the wall 60 to the section 59. Near the.
wall 56, the inclination, of the slices increases, as indicated at 61, 62, respectively.
The way of fixing a blank of a die on the mandrel 23 is shown in fig. 3. The mandrel has a recess 63 into which is fitted a locking plate 64. This plate has a central hole 65 into which penetrates a radial rod 66. The hole 65 has a diameter such that it fits exactly to the diameter. body of a die blank. Inserting into hole 65 at the rear of the plate is a die blank arranged so that pin 66 engages slot 55 and rests against. pa king 56.
The die can be held in this position by a locking screw 67 which is screwed radially through the plate 64. The width of the plate 64 is smaller than the length of the blank, so that the latter protrudes. on the front face of the plate at a distance large enough to cut the helical face of the matrix. When the blank was. inserted in the plate 64, an .monte it.:in-1a recess 63 and it is fixed to the mandrel 23 by bolts 68.
These bolts pull the plate 64 inside the recess 63, which centers the blank exactly with respect to the shaft 21.
The blank is first cut to constitute the internal helical slice 58, which, as was explained previously, is in relief on the rest of the cutting face and is limited by a vertical wall 60 at its edge. outer periphery. The plate 24 is, therefore, provided with -two concentric cams 70 and 71 -which the external one, 71, governs the first cutting operation, which forms the internal helical slice 58, while the internal cam, 70 , is used in the second cutting operation to control the size of the surfaces 59 and 60 '. For the first operation, it is therefore necessary to bring the finger 46 into contact with 1a. external cam 71, which is done by rotating the feed screw 39 in the desired direction.
Before that, it is necessary to move the shaft .21 to the right, so that the finger 46 is away from the surface of the cam while it is. sets its position initially. This axial movement of the shaft is effected by tightening the stop screw 26 against the cam until the latter has been moved sufficiently to come away from the finger 46.
When the finger has been suitably adjusted, the locking screw is turned in the opposite direction, which binds the cam which is then pushed by the res 25 against the finger 46% The face of the annular cam 71 is a helix parallel to the face of the edge 58 which must be cut at the end of the matrix.
In other words; the helix of the cam, although much larger than that of the tool to be cut; has the same axial advance per unit of angular displacement as the helix of the wafer 58, and a certain part of its surface has a change in inclination to constitute the more inclined part 61 of the wafer.
The pulley 22 rotates in the direction of the arrow in fig. 2, and when the blank receives a rotational movement of the pulley, it advances towards the tool 36 due to the cooperation of the cam 71 and the reproducing finger 46. Therefore, the tool 36 helically cut the end of the blank on the part going from the. wall 57 to wall 56 and parallel to the. surface of the cam.
Cam 70 is also provided with a reverse helical surface which allows the blank to return by axial movement to its initial position under pressure of the spring 25 as the cut portion of the blank passes through. before the tool. By this means, the entire end surface of the blank is cut along a helix coinciding with faces 58 and 61.
It goes without saying that a series of cutting operations are necessary to cut the end of the blank and, in carrying out these operations, the carriages 18 and 19 preferably remain immobile while the work is being done. advance the tool 36 transversely using the handle 37 and axially using the handle 38.
When the entire face of the blank has been suitably cut, the outer part of the surface is reduced to a greater depth, as shown at 69, so as to leave the edge 58 in relief and limited by the outer edge of the blank. cylindrical wall 60. This completes the first operation performed on the blank, which operation is governed, in terms of the pitch, of the propeller, by the cam 71. The die then has the shape of FIGS. 5, 7 and 9.
In the -second operation, it -forms the outer edge 59 and the .conoidale wall 60 'using the inner cam 70. It adjusts the edge. stop screw 26 to move the cam plate 24 axially to the right so that the position of the finger 46 can be properly adjusted relative to the.
cam 91, after which the stop screw is brought back to allow the cam 70 to come into contact with the finger 46 .. -The tool 36 is also adjusted relative to the workpiece, either by adjusting the tool -in the tool-holder column 35, either by controlling the advance devices using the -handles 37 and 38, or even by having recourse to all these means at the same time.
The cam 70, bearing against the finger 46, advances the die towards the tool 36 at such a speed, with respect to its angular movement, that this tool cuts the slice 59 with its strongly inclined element 62 in the outer part of the face 69. The. camc 70 also has a shape such that the tool cuts on the scaffold the face cono; ida @ le 60 're bonding the wafer 59 to the base of the. wall 60.
Due to the variable inclination of the conoidal blade 60 ', the blank must be moved axially to an extent suitably proportioned to the transverse feed of the tool 36. For this reason, the carriage 18 is controlled to move in a predetermined time ratio with the movement of the carriage 19, .so that, as. that the finger 46 moves relative to the cam 70 and causes the blank to move towards the tool, the latter receives a movement. proportional transverse.
To achieve extremely high accuracy in die size, cam 70 receives many times the die diameter and the ratio of the speed of the carriage 19 carrying the reproducing finger to the speed of the carriage. tool holder 18 is equal to the ratio between the radius of the inner cam surface and the radius of the face of the workpiece.
In the second operation, the transverse feed is controlled not by the handle 37, but by the feed screw \? 9, which can be actuated either by means of the flywheel 32 or by. the acid of the flywheel 42, this last means making it possible to obtain a very precise transverse advance .de the tool. It will be noted that the surface of the cam 70 is inverted with respect to the surface to be blanked due to the fact that the finger 46 moves radially outwards - while the tool 36 moves radially towards inside, that is to say towards the axis of the shaft.
As in the case of the cam 71, the cam 70 has a helical surface in the opposite direction, the role of which is to return the blank to its original longitudinal position while the slot of this blank passes in front of the tool 36.
A particular die shape and how it is cut on the machine have been described in detail, but it is obvious that other dies can be cut in a part carried by the shaft without it being. necessary to make modifications to the machine other than those consisting in replacing the cams 70 and 71 with different cams. It will also be appreciated that various modifications could be made to the form and construction of the machine object of this invention without departing from the spirit of this invention.
