Process for the manufacture of brake linings, clutch linings and other friction members. In the manufacture of friction materials, more particularly for use in brake linings, brake shoes, clutch linings and the like in which rotary motion is to be transmitted from one shaft to another and the initial load must be transmitted gradually, it is well known to make these friction materials into fibrous substances such as asbestos saturated with a binder, the whole being joined by molding under the action of pressure and, of the heat.
It is also known to add graphite to fibrous materials so as to ensure a smooth action and a low coefficient of friction. However, it is difficult, in these brake linings and the like, to obtain a constant and uniform coefficient of friction along a line or at a point of contact, due to the fact that the strands or particles form the fibrous material. are too large and too strongly separated from each other to make it possible to obtain a uniform coefficient.
The large fibrous particles, when in engagement with the complementary friction element, give a higher coeffi cient than the binder included in the interstices between these particles of fibrous material, so that a variable effect occurs. clamping and sliding, with a constantly changing coefficient of friction.
On the other hand, graphite, when added in small amounts to the fibers, does not mix homogeneously with the latter, so that the clamping and sliding effect is still very strong. stated, and it is impossible to add a large amount of graphite without affecting the. mechanical strength of the finished article.
In accordance with the present invention, pieces (blocks, plates) made of fibrous material with a resinous binder and obtained by compression without heat are then reduced to the state of fine powder, which is subsequently molded into the desired shape. , under the action of heat and pressure. In this way, the material of the brake lining or the like is made completely homogeneous and it has a uniform coefficient of friction.
Where a lower coefficient is desired, graphite, talc or a dry lubricant, in powder form, can be added to the ground material before stringing ide.
The process can for example be carried out as follows: Asbestos fiber is disintegrated or shredded, so as to produce an intermingled or combed mass, to which is added @de phenol-f ormaldehyde or other -product. condensation, dissolved. @ a small amount of alcohol.
The proportions by weight can be, for example, one part of phenol product to three parts of asbestos. The mass is completely mixed and dried without applying heat. The dried mass is pressed into a block or plate, also without heating, and is then pulverized or crushed by a grinding wheel or the like, so as to give a finely divided powder.
This powder is then molded and pressed into the desired shape and size, after which the article is baked or cured -in an oven or the like at an elevated temperature, preferably while it is lying. still under pressure.
A suitable pressure is 160 kg / cm 2, and a suitable temperature is 180 to 185 C, corresponding to a vapor pressure of 10.5 kg / cm 2.
When a friction material is required with a uniformly low coefficient of friction, graphite can be introduced into the powder after the grinding operation.
Appropriate proportions of graphite relative to the powder are for example 7 to 10%, depending on the reduction in the coefficient of friction to be obtained.
After firing, the product is in each case a solid body, the material of which is substantially homogeneous and which will give a more uniform wear; it has considerable mechanical strength and exhibits a constant and uniform coefficient of friction, even in the case of line or point contact with the additional friction surface.
The present invention is particularly suitable for variable speed friction transmission mechanisms, in which elements, intended to come into engagement and having a low coefficient of friction. must withstand the initial change from the state of rest to the state of movement, gradually and with great uniformity, before then transmitting this movement through gearing with a higher coefficient of friction,
