La fig. 4 montre à gauche et à droite de la ligne III III une demi-coupé verticale par l'axe du ressort et une -demi-coupe par l'axe de la came suivant la ligne IV-IV de la fig. 2; La fig. 5 est un plan partiel analogue à la fig. 2 et se rapportant à une variante; Les fig. 6 à 8 se rapportent à une autre variante; La fig. 6 est un plan de dessus du dispo sitif;
Mais en raison,de l'usure des sabots et des bandages ainsi que du jeu pris par les arti culations des timoneries, la course des orga nes do commande s'accroît peu à peu. Le mouvement relatif de la tige 2 par rapport à la tige 6 croît en même temps, de sorte qu'au bout d'un certain nombre de freinages, le cliquet 15 prendra par rapport au secteur 16 un mouvement d'une amplitude suffisante pour sauter sur la dent suivante lors du des serrage @et produira au freinage suivant un déplacement angulaire correspondant -de la came 12;
Automatic adjustment device for brakes. The present invention relates to a device intended for. automatically catch up, as it occurs, the wear of the brake shoes; it relates more particularly to the brakes of railway cars.
This device is based on the fact that the use of the shoes increases the play which exists between them and the wheels when the brake is applied, so that the displacement of all the movable parts of the brake during the movement. The application of the shoes to the wheels increases as the wear increases.
According to the present invention, use is made of the displacement of any one of the organs of the. control of the shoe to automatically actuate, each time the increase in stroke of this member reaches a predetermined limit, a ratchet catching device which modifies the length of this member or of another member of the wedge - order of the hoof. It is thus possible to automatically reduce the play between the latter and the wheel each time it reaches a predetermined value.
To ensure protection of bodies against impact in the event of additional stroke - of the resulting piston, for example. b elastic deformation of the linkage 111111 times the shoes resting on the wheels, it will be advantageous to interpose an elastic device in the ratchet wear take-up device.
The accompanying drawing represents. by way of example, various embodiments of the object of the invention.
Figs. 1 to 4 relate to a first embodiment of the device; Fig. 1 is a general plan of a rb @ railway car brake control mechanism fitted with the retrofit device according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the ratchet take-up device on a larger scale; Fig. 3 is a cross section through the axis of a cam;
Fig. 4 shows to the left and to the right of line III III a vertical half-section by the axis of the spring and a -demi-section by the axis of the cam along line IV-IV of FIG. 2; Fig. 5 is a partial plan similar to FIG. 2 and relating to a variant; Figs. 6 to 8 relate to another variant; Fig. 6 is a top plan of the device;
Fig. 7 is a transverse vertical section along the line VII-VII of FIG. 8; Fig. 8 is a front elevation; Figs. 9 and 10 show another device respectively in plan and in section along the line of FIG. 9; Figs. 11 and 12 are analogous views. of a variant.
In these figures, the wheels and the brake shoes have not been shown, but only part of the linkages and the control members between the brake cylinder and these linkages.
In fig. 1 to 4, 1 designates the brake cylinder and 2 la. .de piston rod movable in this cylinder.
This rod acts by means of a balance 3 on the rod 4 which pulls the brakes corresponding to one of the axles of the car.
This balance is, on the other hand, connected by a pin 5, a rod or connecting rod 6 and a beam 7 to a rod 8 which actuates the brakes of the other axle.
The balance 7 oscillates around a fixed point 9. When braking, when the rod 2 comes out of the cylinder 1, the balance 3 starts to oscillate, for example around its articulation with the rod 4, producing a traction on the rod. rod 6 and on the balance 7. When the shoes controlled by the rod 8 are applied to the corresponding wheels, the balance 7 is immobilized; the spindle 5 becomes fixed and then the balance 3 continuing to oscillate pulls the rod 4, so that the respective shoes are also applied on the corresponding wheels and -that the braking forces are equal on all the shoes.
The spindle 5 is engaged, on the one hand, in elongated mortises 10 made in the fork-shaped end of the rod 6, and it! Is engaged, on the other hand, in a wedging piece 11 which s' presses on a cam 12 rotating on an axis 13 carried by the fork.
A rotation of the cam 12 has the effect of moving the. part 11 and, consequently, the pin 5 with respect to the rod 6 and to its articulation 7a on the balance 7; this is therefore equivalent to reducing the length .de the connecting rod compo Sée 6, 12, 11, and allows -de to catch up the wear 'es shoes and joints -de the drawbar.
This adjustment is produced automatically in the following manner: As and when wear, the stroke of the rod 2, when braking, increases, and consequently, the relative displacement of this rod with respect to rod 6 also increases.
On the axis 2a connecting the rod 2 to the balance 3 is articulated a lever 14 which pivots on the hub of the cam 12.
This lever carries a pawl 15 engaged in a ratchet sector 16 mounted on the axis 13, and this ratchet abuts against a boss 38 of the cam under the action of a spring 39 which bears on an extension 40 (the this cam, so that the ratchet can drive the cam through the res out 39.
If there was no wear in the mechanism, the travel of all the components during successive braking would be invariable; the relative displacement of the rod 2 with respect to the rod 6 would be such that the stroke of the nose of the pawl 15 would remain indefinitely less than the pitch of the teeth of the sector 16. The nose of the pawl would slide forward and back always on the same tooth. The cam 12 would keep an invariable position with respect to the rod 6 and the distance of the axes 5. and would remain constant.
But owing to the wear of the shoes and the tires as well as to the play taken by the linkage joints, the stroke of the control units increases little by little. The relative movement of the rod 2 with respect to the rod 6 increases at the same time, so that after a certain number of brakes, the pawl 15 will take relative to the sector 16 a movement of sufficient amplitude to jump. on the next tooth during tightening @and will produce a corresponding angular displacement on braking - of the cam 12;
this will result in a displacement of the wedging piece 11 and, consequently, a shortening of the -distance between the axes 5 and 7a. The play between the shoes and the wheels will therefore be reduced and the amplitude of the movements of the control will be brought back to the minimum value chosen. The same operation will occur after another period of wear.
It should be noted that the device which has just been described .assures on its own the wear trap of the shoes on the wheels of two: axles and @du taking up play in the wheelhouses.
The pawl 15 is supported on the teeth of the ratchet by a spring 41; this way, there is no danger of this ratchet escaping even if it is worn or if the teeth of the ratchet are worn.
Due to the interposition of the spring 39, the piston can, without inconvenience to the apparatus, travel the additional stroke due to the elastic deformation of the drawbar, once the shoes are tight on the wheels, the spring 39 compresses while the cam remains stationary.
A spring 42 disposed on the axis 13 produces a clamping and a friction between the various members mounted on this axis; its force is adjusted - so that the pressure is sufficient to oppose any untimely rotation of the cam during the release of the brake under the action of the friction of the pawl of the pawl, during the retreat of the latter on the one -tooth ratchet, but low enough for the friction created to be compatible with the proper functioning of the device.
Indeed, too strong a pressure, determining a friction which could not be overcome by the action of the spring 39, paralyzes the apparatus.
In the variant shown in FIG, i @. the lever 14 is extended by an arm 35 and a powerful spring 36 is interposed between this end and the pawl 15.
This is guided by an oval eye 37 on an axis fixed to the lever 14.
When the lever swings in direction # 1 (<B> - </B> the arrow (fig. 5) under the pressure of the brake piston, its arm 35 pulls the pawl through the spring 36, -de so that this eliquet can only drive the ratchet sector 16 with a limited force and is not likely to be broken or to cause the rupture of any other member at the instant when the tightening of its bots on the wheels abruptly stop the rotation of the cam 12.
Of course, one could use any equivalent elastic device, for example interposing between the lever 14 and the pawl a spring working in compression,. Of the type of Belleville washers, etc., such an elastic member could as well be interposed between the lever 14 and axis 2a, etc.
The variant shown in FIGS. 6 to 3 differs from the previous embodiments by the addition of a safety device used to prevent any accidental release of the cam in the event that the pawl 15 ceases to act for any reason: damage , breakage of spring 41, etc.
To this end, a second rocking sector 43 is rigidly fixed to the cam 12 and in the teeth of this sector engages a pawl 44 mounted on the end of the connecting rod 6.
This pawl is held applied against the wheel 43 by a spring 45 and is absolutely opposed to the return of the cam 12 backwards in the event that the pawl 15 no longer acts on the sector 16. On the fib. 9 and 10, the ratchet 16 is integral with the cam 12, but the lever 14 is not driven desmodromically by the axis 2a:
a resilient device is interposed between these two members, so that, once the shoes are pressed on the wheels, the piston can, as previously, travel the additional stroke due to the elastic deformation of the linkage, without running the risk of breaking the wheelhouse. pawl 15 or some other member.
To this end, the end of the lever 14 is engaged -in a part 46 in the form of a fork, the branches of which are journaled on the axis 2a ..
A yoke 47 can slide on the tail 48 of the part 46 against the action of a return spring 57 and is supported by its ends suitably notched on the lever 14.
It can be seen that if the axis 2a is requested to ac complir a greater stroke than that normally provided, the lever 14 can remain behind by resting on the yoke 47, tan say that the spring 57 is compressed.
Of course, parts 46 and. 47 could have all other equivalent forms and provisions; for example the lever 14 could move by compressing a spring return spring in a tubular part rotating on the axis 2a.
In the variant of FIGS. 11 and 12, the lever 3, connected to the piston by the axis 9 at one of its ends is articulated at its other -extré mité at a fixed point 49.
The connecting rod 6 connected to this lever carries the axis 13 of the cam 12 and of the ratchet 16.
Another connecting rod 50-50 is supported by a roller 50a against a spreader beam 51 at the ends of which are articulated the linkages of the brakes (not shown). This connecting rod, in the form of a fork, can slide on the connecting rod 6-6 and carries a pin 52 engaged in grooves 58 & the so-called connecting rod.
On the other hand, the axis 13 can move in grooves 53 of the connecting rod 50-50.
The lever 14-14, carrying the pawl 15 and articulated on the axis 13, is connected by a tie rod 54 to a fixed part 55 of the frame, but with the interposition of a spring 56.
Under these conditions, the lever 14 can perform an additional angular movement by compressing the spring 56 without endangering the components of the apparatus.
It should be noted that in all the above .dis- positives, it is advantageous to spare after the last tooth -of the ratchet a smooth space 16a greater than the maximum stroke. provided -du pawl, so that the cam can not be driven to the point of lais ser its most projecting end beyond the support part 11 that it controls.
This cam is preferably cut along an Archimedean spiral, so that it gives the compound connecting rod (6, 11 or 6, 11, 50) a constant shortening for each angle of rotation of a determined amplitude .
