Description

Process for introducing mercury silver into discharge tubes. In various designs of discharge tubes, it has proven to be useful to bring some mercury into the tube, which has a certain vapor pressure when the tubes are in use and has a favorable influence on the properties of the discharge for certain purposes. Up until now it was customary to remove the mercury after venting and heating the tubes in certain

Measure the vessels connected to the pump line and insert them mechanically into the individual tubes. Working with open mercury, however, easily leads to splashing and should be avoided if possible because of the health hazard. In addition, such a process is not very suitable for mass production.

For these reasons, it has already been suggested that amalgams should be used instead of pure mercury. However, since it often gave rise to faulty operation of the discharge tubes (the amalgams give off the mercury in the heat and take it up again in the cold) and make the manufacture of the tubes very difficult, it has not achieved any significance in technology.

It has now been shown, surprisingly, that it is possible to develop mercury of for the intended purpose completely sufficient purity from certain Mercury compounds by suitable reducing agents in the tube, as is known per se for introducing other metals in Entladungsröh ren is without generally disruptive conversion products. This makes it possible to easily liberate the amount of mercury required for a tube from a small amount of a solid body by heating it from the outside.

Compounds that have not yet been added at the usual pump temperatures, such as, for example, the mercury wolfrawate and the mercury sulfide, have proven to be useful as mercury compounds; iron, nickel, magnesium and other metals have been found suitable as reducing agents.

It is useful to mix the two substances in powder form in a suitable ratio, respectively on the usual machines to small compacts of a certain size. to press a certain weight, to attach it to a metal attachment of the anode plate of each tube and to heat it there after venting by high frequency. In most cases, the compacts give off a purer metal than powder that has not been solidified by pressing.

In cases where a particularly good vacuum or a shortening of the pumping time is important, it can be useful to add an excess of magnesium to the mixture, which is also evaporated in order to remove gas residues.

This method has many advantages over the previously known, of which the following may be mentioned: The tubes can ar automatically in a very short time. pumping devices are pumped and finished. The metal vapor pressure required to operate the tubes is set extremely quickly, as the mercury is deposited on the bell in the form of very fine droplets in the new process, i.e. it has a very large surface.

Health damage from mercury can hardly occur, since the metal is only developed in the tube and the mercury compounds used are completely stable at room temperature and do not release any mercury metal.

In order to avoid that 'of the applied mercury compounds, for example from the mercury sulfide, something evaporates ver and the appearance or properties of the tube is affected by fogging and the like, it is appropriate to bezw over the connection. To apply an absorbent layer over the reaction mixture, preferably made of the reducing agent, that is, made of pure iron powder, nickel powder or the like.

Often it can also be expedient to remove these residues, purposely avoiding subsequent effects of the reaction residues on the mercury vapor. This is done, as it is known per se for the introduction of substances into discharge tubes, expediently by placing the mixture in a tube and from melting this tube after Ausrei ben the mercury vapor.
