De plus, certaines de ces tiges poussoirs sont recourbées comme représenté à la fig. 1, c'est-à-dire autrement que latérale ment, de telle sorte que les extrémités 32 in férieures de toutes les tiges-poussoirs se trou vent en deux groupes de cinq tiges; les extré- mités des tiges-poussoirs d'un groupe se trou- @ant derrière les extrémités des tiges-pous- soirs de l'autre groupe, comme représenté à la fig. 3;
et ses dimensions étant déterminées par la largeur et l'épaisseur des clavettes 70, 71. Cette plaque 63 rainurée est fixée an côté interne du chariot 60. TTn couvercle 64 est fixé sur la face libre de la plaque rainuré. De cette manière, les clavettes 70. 71 Boni maintenues en place. des ouvertures étant ménazées dans les parties supérieures et in férieures clu eonverclc@. ;i travers lesquelles s'éteiideni;
lorsque les touches sont abaissées pour intro duire les chiffres du pré mi.er facteur du pro duit, une des clavettes sera choisie et obligéu (le coulisser dans. une position active dans chacun des ;

Ainsi, lorsque tous les chiffres du premier facteur out été intro duits et qu'un mouvement sélectif a été co-ll- muniqué de ce fait aux clavettes 70. 71 clans 1(#,;
Grâce à ce mécanisme, lorsqu'une toûche 101 est abais sée, toutes les carnes choisies oscilleront simul tanément à partir d'un plan transversal fixe. qui peut être considéré, comme s'étendant ra dialement à partir de l'axe de l'arbre <B>8,5.</B> il travers la barre 92 universelle, lorsque cette dernière est dans sa position initiale, l'oscil lation des cames choisies avant lieu selon uni arc dont la lon-;

Le disque<B>131</B> est disposé à unc# extrémit,': de l'arbre 1.30 (fig. 6) et la goupille 132 fait saillie de sa face externe, tandis qu'une autre goupille plus courte 136 fait saillie de sa face interne, cette goupille étant placée à une dis tance angulaire déterminée d'une encoche 137 ménagée clans la périphérie du disque;

Le transport des-chiffres représentés par le ré glage rotatif des roues totalisatrices 151 est effectué d'une manière déjà indique au moyen des crémaillères coulissantes ?00, coo pérant avec des jeux appropriés de roues to- talisatrices, semblables au jeu 151c;

With reference to FIG. 1. a series of said keys 21 is provided; each key is to be used separately to enter into the machine the digits of the first factor of the product to be calculated by the machine. These keys are poartée by rods 22 which can slide vertically in plates 23, and subjected to the action of springs 24.
Each rod 22 is connected <B> (the </B> effectively by means of an angled lever 25 and "a connecting rod 26 for coupling to an arm 27 of an angled lever pivoted at 28 whose other arm 29 is connected at 30 at the end upper of a sliding push rod 31 sant vertically.
The upper ends of these push rods 31 are spaced apart from each other laterally, as shown in FIG. 2 where they are connected to the arms 29 of the bent levers with the sufficient and necessary play for the assembly of these keyed levers on a common axis 28 and for the links to these levers; but the lower parts of these push rods are curved laterally so as to bring their ends 32 closer together.
In addition, some of these push rods are curved as shown in FIG. 1, that is to say other than laterally, so that the lower ends 32 of all the push rods are in two groups of five rods; the ends of the push rods of one group being behind the ends of the push rods of the other group, as shown in fig. 3;
the push-buttons forming the -roup: 12a frontal, or internal, can (preferably be those which are actuated by the keys bearing the numbers 0, 4, 8. 3 and 7, the rods being arranged side by side in this order when considered from right to <left looking at fig. 3. The group <B> 321) </B> posterior or external push rods is then composed of rods actuated by the numbered keys 2, 6, 1, 5 and 9.
Each push rod is preferably formed of a flat metal strip, and its lower end can slide freely through a guide plate 33. The lower ends of all push rods are square and. in their normal resting position, they are all in the same horizontal plane.
A plate -10 suspended on pivots = 11 between the arms directed upwards of a frame 42 in the form of <B> U </B> of suitable construction can oscillate around a neighboring horizontal axis (the axis (the shaft 28 on which the angled levers <B> 27. </B> 29 are mounted freely (fig. 1). This plate 40 carries two L-shaped guides 43 mounted on its front or internal face. These guides are horizon rate and are spaced from each other. A cha riot 60 can slide on these guides 43.
A spring 44 arranged so as to: act on a lever 45 which is pivoted at 46 to the plate 40 and which is connected at its free end by a connecting rod 47 to the carriage 60, tends to constantly move the latter to the right, as shown in fig. 2, below the lower edges 32 of the grouped push rods.
This movement of the carriage, which takes place step by step, is controlled by an exhaust actuated by a member 48 in the form of a <B> T, </B> whose vertical branch is guided in guides -1-9 ile plate 40, and which can slide up and down, being constantly pulled up by a spring <B> 50 </B> <ifssant by a lever 51 on its lower extremity.
The top 48a of the member 48 is serrated as shown in filg. 2, and stretches to. across and below the ends of the arms 9 of the angled levers to which the rods 31 are attached. When a key 21 is actuated and a rod 31 is lowered towards the carriage 60, the elbow lever? 9 simultaneously pushes the member 48 downwards and activates the exhaust, so that the carriage stops. moves on the plate 40 by the distance of one step, as soon as the key is released.
The exhaust which controls the movement of the carriage is constructed as follows. A horizontal row of seemingly 61 teeth is on the. rear or external face of the carriage. These teeth are equally spaced from each other. The stop 61a is at the end of the row, as shown in figs. 3 and 3. Each tooth 61 is approximately triangular in shape, the upper side being horizontal. The lower end of the member 48 is fixed to the free end of the lever 51 pivoted at 52 on the plate 40.
The lever 51 has a lateral projection on its internal side directed towards the face of the carriage 60. this projection 53 being bored and arranged so as to lie in the passage of a tooth 61 of the carriage and so as to come into contact with it. taken with one side of this tooth. A second lever 54 is also pivoted> in 5 \? and pulled up by a spring 5 <i set to. a lateral pin 56 of the lever. The face of the end of this lever 54 is on the path of one of the sides of a (slow 61 of the carriage and can come into engagement with this side.
The upper edge of this lever is inclined to form a V-shaped notch, as shown in dotted lines at fi. ?. this construction being such that the lower side of a tooth 61 is released when the lever 54 is lowered.
The lowering of this lever occurs when the lever 51 is pressed down by the member 48 when a key? 1 is lowered, since the. protrusion 53 the side of lever 51 is located above the end of lever 5-1. The end of the lever a-1 then strikes at an angle on the lower side. dF = 1 <t slow e l including lc @ c @ îtP Pa,
then grabbed liar <B> the </B> lateral projection 53 of the lever 51. The working face of this lateral projection being at a distance from the center 5? slightly smaller than the face of the lever 5 -?., the carriage will make a slight movement to the right. When the lever 51 is raised again, upon releasing the key? 1 which has been lowered. the projection 53 will move away from the tooth 61 and the carriage will be released so as to move one step to the right.
The carriage will be stopped at the end of this step by the side of the next tooth 61 presenting itself against the end of the lever 54 which has risen as soon as it can by the movement of the carriage.
A series of sets (the keys 70, 71 are mounted on the carriage 60. Each of them is movable separately on the carriage in a vertical direction (fig. 4) and has a straight main part which is located in a guide passage. and which can move in this passage, which is provided in the carriage. They also each include a part 70a: 71a which protrudes forward, that is to say on the internal side of the carriage.
Each key 70, 71 is formed from a flat strip before substantially the L-shaped, side view. and is in a vertical groove and small to move in this groove which is formed in the cha riot 60; the adjustment of a key in the groove is such that it is retained by friction in each of the two positions that it is intended to occupy. A series of parallel grooves 62 is formed in 1P; opposite sides of a plate 63 of suitable thickness (fi (r. 4 and 5), each groove before a depth greater than its width.
and its dimensions being determined by the width and thickness of the keys 70, 71. This grooved plate 63 is fixed on the internal side of the carriage 60. TTn cover 64 is fixed on the free face of the grooved plate. In this way, the keys 70. 71 Boni held in place. openings being menazée in the upper and lower parts clu eonverclc @. i through which fade;
the protruding 1i, ii-lees 70a. 71a. Cha- fine ch @vr> tte 70, 71 is formed by two similar metal bands riveted together at their end parts, key such that these parts are located close to each other, tan say that the intermediate parts of the two bands are slightly separated from one another, so that when this main part of the key is in its groove 62,
the double band will tend to. grasp the sides of the groove and to, oppose accidental displacement, while allowing it both to be pushed longitudinally from one position to another.
Keys <B> ï O, </B> 71 are arranged in sets, each set comprising ten, of which five are those whose projections <B> 700- </B> are found towards their upper ends, while the other five are those whose sails 71a are towards their lower ends. In the example, four of these sets are shown in FIG. 5, where they are separated by dashed lines, the different clearances being indicated by <h, <-1 \. AT'. AT'.
The two key groups of five keys 70 and five keys: 7l forming a set are adjacent, and their relative positions are such as the ends. upper squares of all ten keys 70, 71 of a set cooperate. with lower extremities <B> 32, </B> 32a push rod keys 81 actuated by (, es tociches. Thus,
when the carriage 60 is moved step by step under the control of the exhaust, each set of keys. starting with the set A ', will be. placed in correspondence with the lower ends grouped similarly keys push rods:; l operated by key keys and near these ends. In the beginning. all keys 70.
71 occupy the upper positions in which they can slide and when a key? 1. is lowered, the push rod 31 thus actuated. will lower the one whose upper end then corresponds with the end of the push button. In this way.
when the keys are lowered to enter the digits of the first factor of the product, one of the keys will be chosen and forced (slide it into an active position in each of them;
clearances which are successively placed below the pushrod clearance by the displacement of the carriage. Each set of keys 70, 71 operates according to one designation, the number of keys sets being determined by the capacity of the machine relative to the number of digits in the first factor.
The machine described, where there are four games <h. _-1 =, _l ', _.i [keys 70, 71, are able to work with products in each of which it - has from one to four digits in the first factor.
When all the keys have been lowered, which is necessary to enter all the digits in the first factor, the carriage will present a corresponding number of keys, one in each key different designation sets of these organs, which. were chosen respectively according to the values of the figures entered and which have all been moved to the active position.
The machine can be provided with a key marked, for example, with the multiplication sign; if this key is lowered, it will communicate an oscillating movement around the pins -11 to the plate -10 on which the carriage is located <B> 60. </B> and this movement obli-;, will be the protrusions = 7 (1P 71t, key those of the rla- @:

Cam No. 6, shown for example at. fig. 1, also has a projection 87 which extends towards the carriage 60; a spring 88 is fixed to this protrusion and tends to rotate the, sanie around its axis in the direction of clockwise from the figure. 1, i.e. looking back from the left side of the machine.
The projection 87 of each clame e4 originally entered by an arm 89 of an oscillating hook mounted freely on a handle 90 and having a tail 91 in such a place that it corresponds with. the protruding part 70a or 71a of a key 70 oia 71 brought from the carriage in the manner described, into its active position <U> by </U> following the actuation of a turret. When the frame plate 40 supporting the carriage 60 is actuated, the.
key 70 or 71 which has been removed and displaced will strike. the. tail 91. of the hook with which it is in correspondence and, by releasing the hook 89 from the cam, will allow. ; (this clerniere to rotate around its axis 85 under the action (see spring 88.
The cam 80 will rotate thus, j (is that its rloigf 86 directed downwards hits a common bar 9 which extends horizontally below all the cams, this bar being carried by two arms 9; levers carried by the shaft 85 on which all the cams are mounted so that they can turn freely. It is necessary (the uiaposition the:
hook. rte so that their tails correspoudeni, with the upper and inner rows of protrusions 70a and 71a. Ire this fact, as repra # - -enté in fig. i and 8, some of the cams have their protrusions which are gripped by the hooks .. straight down. as in 87a, the.
corresponding hooks 89.1 before the tails 91a directed upwards. so as to be able to correspond with the protrusions 7 fta of the upper channel (, ## ée upper. The protrusions 711 of the lower channel will then correspond with the tails 91 of the hooks 89 and can grip these tails.
The cams which have projections 87a directed downwards are fitted with <B> 87h </B> to which res sort: 88a are set. The hooks receive in pairs the action of springs 91 formed and arranged as shown in. the 1. so that these springs tend to make all the hooks oscillate towards the cams, thus allowing their in,) - aoelnent with the projections <B> N7. </B> 87a of the cams.
The number of cams 80 corresponds to air number of keys <B> 70. </B> 71 and, like them. are arranged in groups of ten. each group corresponding to a different designation # - annuity. Via hooks. 89a, which respectively align these cams and which initially maintain them in their inactive or "dead" positions,
have their tails arranged in such a way with respect to the clav et- f # s 70. 71, that when the carriage: is moved step by step, the keys <B> 70. </B> 71 groups will be placed in opposition to <U> groups </U> successive = of brackets. so believe any key 70 or 71.
which has been brought into the active position by pressing a key, will correspond <with the tail of a croehf @ t and will be able to act on this hook when the hariot is nlîa sideways by the oscillation of the frame plate -1t).
Thus, when all the digits of the first factor have been entered and a selective movement has thereby been commu- nicated to keys 70. 71 clans 1 (# ,;
different designation groups on the carriage, the oscillation of the carriage will ensure the libe '# ration (the hooks in different designation -rones and will thus put in actiola separate cams in the corresponding groups. All these cams, which have thus chosen and put into action, will revolve around the tree <B> 85, </B> until their fingers 86 are in contact with bar 92.
The schematic views of FIGS. 7 and 7a indicate the manner in which the movement of the carriage 60 effects the successive placement of the selected keys 70 and 71, in the various sets with respect to the various sets of cams 80, when digits in the first factor are entered. in the machine. As already mentioned, the different sets of keys which function for each designation can be designated by A1, A-.
.1 ', _1F. Likewise, the different 80s cam sets that work compared. with the various designations, can be designated by B ', B2, B', B @. In the initial position of the carriage 60,
the first set of keys tes ri 'is on one side of the first set of cams B'. When a key has been depressed to enter the first digit of the first factor and the lower end 32 of the corresponding push pin has chosen and moved a key 0 or 71 of the set -11 with which the end of this hge-pusher is then in correspondence and that the key rises in sequence,
the carriage 60 moves as described by the distance of one step thereby bringing the set A 'in opposition and in correspondence with the Pikes which control the first set of cams B'. The parts are then in the relative positions shown diagrammatically at. fig. 7.
If the first factor contains only one number, the plate 40 of the carriage frame is obliged to oscillate and the key which has been chosen and moved into its active position in the set A ', acts on the hook with which it is then in correspondence and in this way releases the corresponding cam of the game B '.
This cam set works with respect to units. tan dis due the other sets of cams B ', B', Ba work respectively for tens, hundreds and <B> the </B> thousands of the first factor figures of the products with which <the machine is working.
With reference to FIG. 3, the plate 64 fixed to the carriage 60 has three protruding cleats on its left end, that is to say the end which.
in this figure, is shown broken away for clarity of the drawing. These bucket piles occupy positions analogous to the protrusions i oa, when the latter have been lowered into an active position and the three cleats are arranged so that when the plate 40 oscillates, the cleats will engage with the tails 91a of the hooks 89a and will activate the zero cams in the cam sets which are to the left of the carriage 60.
Thus, if the first factor is only one digit, and if the carriage has occupied the relative position shown in FIG. 7, the selected number cam will be released in set B1 and zero cams in sets B \, B 'and B' will be released by the piles carried by the. plate 64.
The cam required in the set Bl of the units having thus been chosen and activated, - it is aloi-, possible (place this cam according to the value of a key which 1-ielit to be lowered for enter the first digit (Read the second factor. This cam can be tested and the response thus observed can: be indicated <B> of </B> as described below.
If we have for example three digits in the first factor, it follows that when the corresponding keys are successively lowered, the ends 3? push rods will choose and move in their position, - active a key 70 or 71 in each of the sets A ', _1', A ". The carriage will move in a small way following each key depression.
so that when the three digits have been entered, the cart will have taken the. position shown in fig. 7a with respect to the cams clearances. For example, if the first factor is --178. the keys 0 and 71 which work for these numbers, will have been chosen and effectively placed for? in the hundred of set A ', for 7 in the tens of, set. 1 =, for 8 in the units of set A'. The plaque.

the zero cam of set 1'I, the cam of number 2 of set B, la. cam of number 7 of set B \ and cam of number 8 of set Bl. When the first digit of the second factor is entered, all four cams which have been activated are rotated by an arc determined by the value of the key lowered, and the cams: are then tested simultaneously and the solution thus observed is transmitted to the response indication mechanism.
It will be noted that when the cams 80 thus chosen are in contact with the bar 92, they are in action only, and not yet placed to be tested. This positioning movement is effected by oscillating the bar 92 of an arc whose length is determined by the value of a digit of the second factor, which is then entered into the machine by lowering the appropriate key. A second set of keys 101 (Fig. 1) is used to enter the digits of the second factor, this set of keys being distinct from the set 21 which is used to enter the digits of the first factor.
Means are provided to give to. bar 9? universal and through it to all the cams chosen, one movement according to the value of each key <B> 101 </B> which is lowered in order to introduce the digit of the second factor.
These means comprise the levers 93 which carry the ends of the bar 92 and which are connected ïi. these ends: they are spun at the ends of the shaft 85 and are directed towards these ends. As indicated, these levers 93 protrude towards the lias. so that the bar 92 is located below all the cams 80. Two lever. 95, 96, carried by shaft 85, protrude upward from this shaft. The lever 96 has at its end a toothed ratchet sector.
A pawl 98 is rotated into a 97 star fixed part, taken from this sector. This (1i- which, 95 is intended to come into jail with the (slow of roclie1; and thus to maintain the bar 92 in the. Position in which it was placed with the shaft 85, as a result of the 'lowering a key 101.
The pawl 98 has a shank 99 which, when actuated by the exhaust niéczinisnic described below, will lift the pawl and release the bar 9? which will then be reanien (and its initial position by the action (springs 88. 88a cams. The cams chosen will return to their active positions.
(the such that they are ready to be tilted and thus placed again, as determined by the, numerical value of the next key 101 which is lowered. The oscillation of the bar 9? is effected by a connecting rod 100 at one end to lever 95 and at the other end = # to a member to which a movement is initiated, when each key 101 is lowered.
Each key 1111 is mounted on one. rod 102 which can slide vertically in the plates 2 @ 1, the button being pushed upwards by a spring <B> 103. </B> Each rod <B> 1.02 </B> of keys has near its lower end a 101- pin protruding literally. A plate 105 is mounted in such a manner.
that it can slide horizontally 'in (the:. <B> 101 </B> and close to * one side of the extreme parts: lower (the 102 keys of keys.
This plate 10i is diri7-ed upwards and is notched from its upper edge. of a series (the 1st grooves, straight downwards.
The upper edge 1t) 7 (the the plate is parallel to the ui (s) (l; -: on which the plate can be placed (l4-place and each of the grooves 10ï; ends near <B> of </B> I) lower ord 108 of the plate on a read which is parallel to the edge 107 of the plate.
Each of the grooves 106 is directed obliquely with respect to the upper edge 10 "c of the plate, the groove forming an acute angle with the vertical plane in which lies and moves a key pin 102. The acute angles thus formed. by the grooves 106 are different tones and increase in a defined way.
Each groove is intended to cooperate with a key rod pin 104, when a key 101 is lowered, each pin 104 also engaging with vertical grooves 109 which guide them and which are formed in two plates. <B> 110 </B> fixed located on each side of the sliding plate 105 and which facilitate the guiding of this plate 105 (fig. 23).
Thus, when a key 101 is lowered, its pin 104 forces the plate 105 to slide a horizontal distance determined by the key angle the groove 106 engaging with it, and this horizontal distance represents a ratio defined by the numerical value of the key. The end of the connecting rod 100 is attached to the plate 105, so that the bar 92 will oscillate when the plate 105 is forced to slide due to the lowering of a key 101.
The angular motion communicated in this manner to the bar 92 and by it to the rods 80 which have been chosen and which are in contact with it, will vary by angular, regular and defined increases, determined respectively by the increment. naison of the grooves 106 of the plate 105, which in turn correspond to the numerical values of the various keys 101.
By virtue of this mechanism, when a toeuche 101 is lowered, all the chosen tails will oscillate simultaneously from a fixed transverse plane. which can be considered as extending radially from the axis of the shaft <B> 8.5. </B> it through the universal bar 92, when the latter is in its initial position, the oscillation of the cams chosen before taking place according to a single arc including the lon-;
-tic # ur is determined by the value of the key down, i.e. the value of the digit (the second factor which is. thus introduced into the machine. The selected cams which have thus been placed are. maintained by the pawl 98 and by the lever 96 of the ratchet sector, and these cainc- are ready to be tested for cry note the values of the partial products shown p; ir the placed parts of the selected cams.
As indicated above, each sheath 80 cooiprend two parts, notched 81 and 82. The first key these parts 81 is. originally placed so as to be directed substantially horizontally and the notch 83 of this part is such that it represents the partial product click units.
The second part 82, clui clans the key initial position the cam eqt up, is notched as indicated at 8-1 according to the tens of the partial product. So when the chosen chuck keys have been fi nally placed by oscillation. as described above, depending on the single digit numerical value of the first factor, the partial products represented by these fitted cams can be seen, with respect to the units, by feeling the lower groove 83 (the cam and with regard to the tens by feeling the upper groove M.
The relative angular positions of the two parts 81 and 82 are such that the graduations or the notches corresponding to each other in these parts, are approximately distant (the 90. The notches indicated above as corresponding are those which, in the two parts of the cam, represent tens and units keys respectively:
and thus constitute even keys, notches them: in any pair representing together a partial product.
We have shown ii la, fig. 8 mi, full set of these quails:

The numerical values of the depths of the checkmarks are indicated by the numbers niai, - qu on the concentric arcs, while, the numerical values closed in different positions in which the rods can oscillate,

So. -i this carne is. l, a, - abutment and placed angularly for the number 8, this last number being a number <B> (read </B> second factor of the product carried out and if the two parts 81 and 82 of the cam are subsequently tested in the manner described here, the feeling movements taking place in a radial direction with respect to the axis of drug.
the depth of the notch which is tested in the part 82 of the tens, will be four radial increases, while the depth of the corresponding notch in the part 81 of the units, will be eight radical increases, this giving an indication of the product 48. The feeling of the cams 80 is effected by means of feelers with two arms, which are constructed so as to oscillate and which are arranged to function as described below.
These members are mounted on a common shaft 120 and movable separately on this shaft (fie. 1). Each feeler has an arm 121 directed downward and having at its end a curved blade-shaped feeler 122, and an upwardly directed arm 123, which is provided at its end with a similar feeler finger 124. The arm 123 presents a branch 125 directed upwards, to. the end of which is a toothed sector 126.
The construction and arrangement of these feelers 121 and 123 relative to the cams 80 are such that when a bone feeler wobbles in one direction from a mid or neutral position, the graduation or notch of one sectors of one of the cams 80 will be felt by soli arm 123, and when the feeler is moved in the other direction through its neutral position, its arm 121 will feel the notch chi opposite sector of a cam of the neighboring key cam set.
The arrangement of the feelers with respect to the sets of cams is shown in, fig. 6, as well as to the diagram of FIG. 7.
The feeler key actuation mechanism is keyed such that the feelers are tilted first in a counterclockwise direction according to fig. I, then in the direction of clockwise around their common shaft j 20, Thus, each feeler, by means of soli arm 123, first feels the tens part of a cam.
then when the feeler moves in the direction (clockwise, the feeler arm 121 feels, the units part of a cam. <B> We </B> will notice though. as shown in fig. 6 and 7.that while the lower arm 121.
of each or- "gone feeler operates with respect to the sector of the cam units chosen and placed in a denomination set, such as for example the set B2 of fig. i. the arm 123 directed upwards of the same member The tester works in relation to the parts of the tens key cams (read BI caries key set adja hundred, lower.
Three keys, these feelers each have two arms 121 and 1 \ 23, while another feeler has only one arm 121 and one blade 122) for feeling the units of the lower set B1, and another feeler is present that 'one arm 123 to feel the tens; in the game B4. the highest of eames.
If, for example, the product to be executed is the key multiplication 396 by -l, the introduction of the digits 3, 9, 6 by pressing the keys in the first set will be carried out as described below. above by choosing and activating three cams respectively in the three adjacent sets B ''. B =. B 'and of the zero cam in the set Bs. The cam of the first set B3 will be the cam n o a shown at. trust.

The cam in set B = will be the cam # 9 which is notched to represent all the products of 9 multiplied by the numbers 1 to 9. The cam in set B = will be the cam # 6 which is notched to represent all the products of 6 multiplied by the numbers 1 to 9.
The multiple positioning of all these three cams with respect to the figure -1- is effected when this figure is introduced by actuating a key 10l., So that by feeling the selected cam in the , game B '. we will see the first partial product of <B> 1; </B> multifiE 'by 4 = 24.

These partial products can be indicated as follows:
EMI0011.0006
24
<tb> 36
<tb> 1 <SEP> 2
<tb> 1584 As the first of the designating feelers tends to oscillate in a counterclockwise direction, it will not move, since there is no lower designation cam which part of the tens can be tested. When this first feeler oscillates in a clockwise direction, it will feel the units, that is to say the number 4 in one of the parts of the cam no. 6 of the set Bi.
As the second designation feeler oscillates counterclockwise, it will feel the tens part of cam no.6 of set B 'and notice the tens value, i.e. the number, 2 in the first partial product, and when this feeler oscillates clockwise, it will feel the units part of cam no 9 of set BZ and will note the units; that is, the number 6 in the second partial product.
Likewise, the third feeler will feel the tens of: second partial product in cam no 9 of set BZ, i.e. the number 3, then the units in cam no 3 of set B ', i.e. that is, the number 2 of the third partial product.
The fourth feeler will feel only the units only, in particular the number 1 of the third partial product. Of cam no: 3 of set B 'and will be prevented from feeling in the clockwise direction, by the zero cam of the game B4. The fifth feeler will be prevented from feeling the tens by the zero cam of set B4 and he will be prevented from feeling clockwise by a permanent stopper, because he never passes. necessary to test the units.
The depth measured in the radial direction of each cam notch has a linear value corresponding to the numerical value it represents, this depth being based on any suitable unit of radial distance. These units are indicated by the concentric arcs in the image of cam # 6 in fig. 8. Therefore, in the cases indicated above, when the second feeler moves counterclockwise. it will have oscillated from its neutral or average position to. across an arc measuring two units apart.
However, when that same feeler swings clockwise, it will move. beyond its neutral position an arc whose. length is equal to 2 -f- 6 units of length. Thus, the total oscillation of the feeler in the direction of the hands of a watch will represent the sum of the tens, that is to say 2 in the first partial product, and the units, that is to say 6 in the second partial product, so that the feeler will have moved a distance of 8. Similarly, the third feeler shown above, when oscillating in a clockwise direction, will move in a clockwise direction. total distance equal to the sum 3 + 2 = 5.
In this way, all the feelers who blink simultaneously, first counterclockwise, then clockwise, thanks to a mechanism described below, will move respectively in the direction of the needle. of a watch over arc lengths corresponding to the different values of the digits of the units, tens, hundreds and thousands of the final sum response.
The oscillation of the feelers 121, 1'23 which takes place in one direction, then in 1 <Z reverse direction, is carried out by means ensuring the correct synchronism of the feeling movements with respect to the placement (the cams. The, power source for the (#. Movements (the feelers is a 10 lioi-izmital shaft. on lp (Iupl:
acts a spring which tends to make it turn. this spring being wound up when the mechanism is returned to the starting position. The rotation of this shaft 130 is required by a hook escapement shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, which is actuated <B>, the </B> way i release the shaft when you lower a key 101. The.
arrangement is such that it is the last part of the downward movement of the key which releases the shaft 130, the first part of the downward movement of the key having effected the placement by rotation of the cam 80, according to the value. numeric of the key (the as described above. Thus, the mechanism ensures that the selected cams are first placed and that a movement is then communicated to the feelers.
r ii elastic link is interposed between the shaft <B> 130 </B> and each of the feelers, so that, over the minimum distance necessary to feel the notch or the radial graduation la. deeper in any cam, feeler movement in each direction can be stopped without detrimental mechanical strain on the various parts of the cam which are shallower than the maximum depth. 7l is also necessary to ensure that each feeler member is always returned to its central position or neutral after it has' 4é tilted.
As indicated above, some parts of the cams are such that feelers acting on them will be prevented from making any oscillating movement either in one direction or in the other.
A plate 111 (Fig. 1) disposed horizontally below rods 102 of the keys 101 is carried by angled levers 11? pivoted in 11.3 and connected by a connecting rod 11-t. (the way of constituting a device with parallel movements, thanks to which the plate 111 can move downwards while remaining horizontal.
The lower ends of all key rods 102 are located above this plate 11.1 at such a distance that when any key is fully lowered. in the last part die inoiivemc-nt descending from its stem.
it c, ntrc @ in contact with the plate and lowers the latter. This downward movement of the first plate will take place just when the 10-t pin carried by the touch rod reaches the lower end of the inclined groove 106 formed in the plate 105 which performs the rotary placement of the selected cams, as described. above. The movement of the ashes of the plate 111 effects the release of a hook forming part of an escapement which controls the rotation of the shaft 130. a connecting rod 1.15 (fig. 10) extending for this purpose between one of the levers 112 and the hook member.
This escape mechanism cooperates with the pawl 98 intended to come into engagement with the teeth of the sector 96 mounted on the oscillating shaft 85 which carries the bar 92. The arrangement is such that, when a key 101 is lowered and. that this bar 92 is tilted to place the cams 80 by rotation, in the manner described. pawl 98 will hold. the bar in the position in which it has. been toggled, as well as the cams after the key has been lib (:, @ (#t although the cams are feeling.
The pawl 98 is automatically struck by the exhaust, when the feeling of the cams is finished, and the spring driven shaft ends its rotation which gives an oscillating movement to the feelers.
The shaft 130 and its spring are arranged so that the spring tends to. turn the shaft clockwise according to fig. 1. A crank disc 131 having a 13 \ 3 pin, a cam <B> 133 </B> intended to lift a lever when the shaft rotates, and a cylinder <B> V34 </B> are fixed on this shaft 130 (fig. 1, 6, 10 and: 11.). A substantially helical groove 135 is provided in the periphery of cylinder 1.34.
The function of this groove is to give a rise to certain parts (the mechanism in a direction parallel to the axis of the shaft. Lc- mechanisms associated with the. Cam 133 and with the cylinder 134 (the cam will be described). ei- after.
The disc <B> 131 </B> is disposed at one end, ': of the shaft 1.30 (fig. 6) and the pin 132 protrudes from its outer face, while another shorter pin 136 protrudes from its inner face, this pin being placed at a determined angular distance from a notch 137 formed in the periphery of the disc;
the periphery of this disc works like a cam, and acts on a pawl 138 which is connected by the connecting rod 115 to the horizontal plate <B> 111, </B> which can be lowered by the keys 101. The downward movement of this plate 111, when a key 101 is lowered, has the effect of removing the pawl 138 from the notch 137, so that the disk <B> 131 </B> can be rotated by the spring acting on the shaft 130 until the end of its rotation, the pawl then entering the notch again.
The pin <B> 136 </B> of the internal face of the disc 131 cooperates with a member 139 for triggering the exhaust, so as to ensure the re-engagement of the pawl with the notch <B> 137. </B> The pawl 138 and the trigger member 139 protrude from a hub 140 carried by a pin 14I. A lever 112, formed on this hub, is directed downwards and constitutes a shank having a lateral pin 1-13 intended to strike the shank 99 of the pawl 98. <B> From </B> this way, this ratchet can be released from the toothed sector <B> 96, </B> so as to release bar 92.
Thus, at the end of the rotation of the shaft 130, when the oscillating movements of the feelers are completed, the selected cams will all be released and will be able to return back to the positions occupied by them, when they are chosen and put into action 11a first time.
The pin 132 (the disc 131 (Fig. 1) is connected by a connecting rod 1-14 to an arm of a lever 145 carried by a horizontal oscillating shaft 146, to which a downwardly directed plate 117 is fixed radially. levers 118 are mounted freely on this winking bone shaft.
These levers are directed in their initial positions in opposition to the plate, 1-17 and practically in line with this plate, which is fixed to the shaft, that is to say, the plate (: both. downwards, these levers are directed upwards.
Each of these levers 148 is secured by a connecting rod 149 though a pin 127 on the side <B> (reads </B> Iras 12. ',' of a feeling organ. The plaque <B> 1-17 </B> carried by the oscillating shaft, present fixed to it, towards its outer edge and on its opposite sides.

This device constitutes a flexible connection between the shaft 146 and the various feeler levers 148, such that when the sorrel tree in one direction or the other, it will tend to drag all the feeler levers with it, but if a resistance opposes the movement of any feeler lever, for example when a feeler is in contact with a notch of a cam, the oscillation of the shaft can be continued completely, without harmful efforts on the others parts of the mechanism.
The pairs of springs 150 are arranged in such a way that when the shaft 1-16 is in its initial position, the feelers 1-18 are held in such a way by the springs that the feelers 121. 123 will be in their position. neutral positions. les (loi-, ts 1_i ?. 124 (the each feeling member being a short distance from the periphery of sectors 81. 8? of the cams.
When the shaft 130 actuated by a res out makes a full rotation, the oscillating shaft 1.16 will be tilted first in one direction, then in the other, thus communicating through the flexible links, the movement. oscillating necessary, in the first place in the opposite direction of the wings of a watch according to the fi.

A shaft 170 (fig. 1, 9 and 14) mounted in suitable bearings is disposed horizontally near the shaft 130 actuated by a spring, and has attached to it near its ends two levers 171 whose ends are connected. by a rod 172 parallel to the shaft.
This shaft 170. with the levers 171 and the rod 172 connecting them, constitutes a frame which can be tilted around the axis of the shaft by means of an arm. <B> 173 </B> which projects downwardly from the shaft with its end pressing against the periphery of cam 133 described above and mounted on spring-actuated shaft 130. This frame has another arm 174 directed downwards (fig. <B> 1-1) </B> whose purpose will be explained below; it carries another frame (fig. 9) which includes flanges 175 and cross-members 176, 177, and can. slide along the shaft 170 and along the rod 172 which passes through the side members 175.
This sliding frame protrudes beyond the tilting frame 1.71, 173, (@ oiniiic- shown in figures 1 and 9 and its part knows = lies supports the shaft 152 with the wheels 151 totalizing or responding, which are thus found above the feeler sectors 126.
Two bosses <B> 178 </B> freely mounted the shaft 170 of the oscillating frame are connected by a longitudinal part 1.79, one of them having an arm 180 which projects towards the rear of the shaft 170 6 and 9), that is, moving away from the oscillating frame 171, <B> 172 </B> and the sliding frame <B> 175. </B> These bosses are located between and against the flanges 175 of the frame of the totalizing wheels, and thus engage this frame. in such a way that movement imparted to the arm 180 in the direction of the axis of the shaft 170 will force the arm to carry with it the sliding frame of the totalizer wheels and to slide this frame along the oscillating frame 171. , 172.
This arm 180 has, near the soli end and on the soli lower side, four projections 181 in the form of similar teeth and directed downwards (fig. 6) which are equally spaced from each other in a horizontal direction parallel to the bottom. 'axis of the ar ber 170. These teeth 181 are arranged (the such that they can successively engage with the peripheral groove 135 of the cam 1.34 carried by the shaft 1:30 when this'! _ shaft rotates .
The cam will thus impart to the arm 180 a movement in the direction of the axis of the shaft. <B> 170 </B> and so through the interior of this arm, the frame <B> 175 </B> of the to talisateur wheels will be. forced to slide along the oscillating frame 171, 172.
The link between the arm 180 and the frame 175 is in fact an articulated link so that the frame can be raised and lowered by oscillating the frame 171, 172, without affecting the engagement of the teeth 181 with the groove 135 This extends around the cylinder 13-1 for more than one turn, its two ends being inclined thereafter in opposite directions, and opening at the ends of the cylinder.
The shape and arrangement of this cam groove, thus due to the teeth 181 which successively engage with it, are so chic when the shaft <B> 130 </B> on which the cylinder 134 is mounted makes a complete revolution. one of teeth 181. either. in engagement with one end of the groove 135 (the cam, a sliding displacement movement given to the totalizer wheels 151 with respect to the sectors <B> 126 </B> feelers.
This movement of movement is sufficient to bring the wheels totalized from intermediate planes between the planes of the sectors. <B> 126 </B> in the plans of these sectors, so that the totalizer wheels can be lowered to engage the feeler sectors (fig. (I). The frame 175 of the totalizer wheels is then held in this position by the groove 135 and the tooth 181 which engages with it, until the desired moment when.
after the totalizer wheels have been lifted so as to disengage from the feeling sectors, a sloping part of the groove <B> 135 </B> gives a new movement of movement to the totalizer wheel frame, thus moving the totalizer wheels back into the intermediate planes between the planes of the feeler sectors. At this moment, the. Second tooth 181 engages the. groove 135, the shaft 130 having then completed one rotation.
When this shaft performs its next rotation, following the introduction of another number in the second factor, the first tooth 181 comes out (the cam groove 135, while the second tooth transmits the necessary displacement movement of the cam to the frame <B> 175, </B> (the same way as before. This cycle of operations replicates according to the construction and capacity of the machine in relation to the number of digits of the second factor with which it can work.
As can be understood, the shape of the groove <B> 135 </B> cam and its position on the shaft 130 are determined so as to synchronize the movements created by the cam with the movements created by the lifting cam <B> 133 </B> and. by the pin 132, thus ensuring a suitable coordination between the feeler movements, the raising and lowering of the totalizer wheels relative to the feeler sectors and the movement of the totalizer wheels through the feeler sectors.
It will be noted that when a digit of the second factor has been entered into the machine by lowering the appropriate key 101, the operations carried out directly by the iibaissenient of this 1ouelie; have the. If desired.
means can be provided to block the totalizing wheels when they are lifted and released from the feeler sectors, thus avoiding the risk of accidental rotation (these wheels.
The totalizing wheels can be constructed and arranged: to present directly in a visible manner the response thus obtained or a mechanism can be provided, thanks to which when a product jacks, has been introduced into the totalizing mechanism and that the whole mechanism is brought back to its zero position to introduce a new product,
the product already in the totalizing mechanism can be transferred and processed in another way. For example, one can provide means by which each product as thus observed is printed and by which successive products are totaled and this total indicated.
The construction of the totalizer mechanism emplo5-é preferably is that shown in detail in Figs. 18 to: 31. This mechanism comprises a series of groups of wheels, each group comprising members with three wheels and the number of groups corresponding to the number of designations or figures which may be found in the solution. The three wheel members are divided into indicator wheels 151, feed wheels 153 and intermediate wheels 154; all these wheels can turn directly or indirectly on the shaft 152.
The indicator wheel 151 is constituted by a disc formed at the end of a sleeve 155 of suitable length, the end of which is furthest from the disc has the shape of an eccentric 156. The face of the disc which is furthest away of the socket 155, carries a series of teeth 157 formed by protruding pins; this disc is provided with twenty of these teeth 157. A notch 158 formed in the periphery of the disc is intended to cooperate with a pawl, the position of the wheel being the zero position when the pawl abuts against this notch.
When the wheel turns from its zero position, the pawl which rests first on a part of the periphery of the small diameter wheel, as shown in fig. 19, is lifted by a ramp 159 over a portion of larger diameter extending over a. arc which may have approximately 180 up to notch 158. Thus, if wheel 151 has rotated nine units of distance while transmitting the digits of a product to the response mechanism, the pawl is on the raised part. from the periphery of the wheel near notch 158. When this wheel comes back to.
its zero position, the pawl rests on the raised part, up to the. ramp 159 where the diameter of the wheel decreases, then abuts against the radial face of the notch 158. The key purpose of this construction will be explained below.
The introducer wheel 153 is disc-shaped mounted on the end of a short socket which is carried and rotates freely on the socket 155 of the indicator wheel 151, the socket of the introducer wheel serving as part of the insert. 'spacing between one of the faces cl.- this wheel and the adjacent flat face of the wheel 1.51 .. The introduction wheel is provided on its face opposite to the flat face of the wheel 151, with nine teeth 160 projecting laterally .
constituted by pins; eighteen other; teeth 161 also formed by pins are found on the other face of the introducer wheel 153. The intermediate wheel 154 has on its periphery key teeth in the form of 1 /, as shown in FIGS. 20 and 21, the key number of these teeth being seventeen. This wheel is carried and turns freely on part 15 (the eccentric key to the wheel sleeve 151.
When the parts are mounted on the shaft <B> 152. </B> as shown in fig. 18, the wheel <B> 151 </B> intermediate is between the face of the indicator wheel 151, which is provided with the teeth 157 and the face of the introduction wheel 153 which carries the teeth 161, these three wheels forming a group operating in relation to to one and the same designation.
Teeth 157 <B> of </B> the. wheel 151 and teeth 161 of wheel 15: 3 can all engage with the teeth of intermediate wheel 154 by penetrating between them; but this contact of the teeth can only occur on a small arc only, as seen in, fig. 20, as a result of the eccentric mounting of the intermediate wheel 15-1. The arrangement is such that if the input wheel 153 has turned by a value of ten units.
it will act with the aid of the intermediate wheel 154 to rotate by one unit the indicator wheel 151 of the group of the following designation the most <B>, </B> 'lifted' e. The nine teeth 160 of one of the faces <B> of Each introduction wheel 153 are the teeth which, when the key response mechanism is lowered in the manner described, engage the toothed sector 1.26 of a feeler member. When the response mechanism is lifted to its neutral position, the same teeth 160 are engaged with a sliding rack 200 provided with teeth 201.
It is possible, thanks to the connection between the groups of wheels, the key to rotate simultaneously, either in one direction or the other, at least two introduction wheels 153, when a product is introduced into these wheels by feelers 126, or when these wheels are then returned to their zero positions by sliding the racks 200. The connection between the wheels, in adjoining groups, takes place through the sleeve 155 of each wheel <B> 151 </B> indicator and the eccentric 156 mounted on this socket.
All wheel groups are mounted side a., Side and can rotate separately on shaft 152. A wheel 151a is at the end of the lowest designation (fi -. 18); this wheel has no teeth on its external face, but only a pin which engages with a hole in the plate which serves as a support for one end of the shaft 152, the wheel being thus prevented from turning. A freely rotating indicating wheel 151b is mounted at the other end of the series of wheel groups.
This wheel 151b has teeth 157 on its internal face, but the hub of this wheel does not carry an introduction wheel and does not have any part of eccentric shape.
A shaft 162 extends parallel to the shaft 152 near the periphery of the wheels carried by the latter shaft; pawls 163 are mounted on the shaft 162; each of these pawls is intended to engage with the notch 158 of the periphery of an indicator wheel 151.
Due to the nature of the response mechanism and the manner in which the indicator wheels 151 of the upper designation groups can receive movements from the restraints. these rotations can take place in small arcs and if it happens that one of these indicator wheels is near its zero position, this wheel could tend to be gripped by its pawl 163, before the wheel has rotated, like this, could be, about 360 back, until its real zero position.
To avoid this, the racks 200 are forced to slide successively, and not simultaneously, as they return the mechanism wheels (the response to their zero positions. In addition, the pawls 163 of the various response wheel groups are re-linked. so between them that when a pawl operates with respect to the group of wheels of one designation, it is held back until the pawl which operates with respect to the group of the immediately lower designation is on the point of engaging with the notch 158 of the indicator wheel 151 of this group.
This connection of the pawls together is obtained moderately by constituting each pawl 163 as an arm projecting from one end of a short socket 164 on the other end of which a second arm 165 is provided with a lateral extension 166 which re covers the arm 163 constituting the pawl of the following lower designation.
As described above, the periphery of each response indicating wheel 151 is constructed such that pawl 163 cannot move inward. until the wheel has returned to a substantial arc measured from its notch 158 when that wheel is returned to its original position. Although thus held outwardly through portion 166, this hand pawl holds in the "open" position the pawl which operates with the indicator wheel 151 of the next higher designation group.
The construction is such that it is possible to rotatably and simultaneously place at least two of the wheels 151, when the teeth 160 of the wheels 153 are gripped by the sectors 126, while at the same time the necessary restraint. can be transported from one group of totalizing wheels to the next. Similarly, it is possible with this mechanism, when it is in engagement with the mesh racks 200, to return all these wheels to the zero position and finally to this position, when the racks slide in the direction necessary to effect this reset. zero.
The relative positioning of the various wheels of the totalizing mechanism is then transferred to these sliding racks, of which the respective horizontal positions in which they have been placed from their various zero points will correspond to the numerical relative positions of the wheels. totalisers with which they were engaged when the racks were moved from these zero positions.
Likewise, if one or more other totalizer mechanisms are engaged with these racks and the latter are obliged to return to their zero positions, it follows that these other totalizer mechanisms will have their wheels rotated. to the numerical values represented by the positions from which the individual racks have moved to return to zero.
The totalizer mechanism carried by the sliding frame 175 is constructed in the same manner as shown in FIGS. 18 and 19, and the assembly shown in these figures is that used for some of the other totalizing mechanisms which will be described above.
The shaft 162 which carries the pawls 163 is mounted in the sliding frame 175. A locking device shown in FIGS. 1, 9, 12 and 13 is provided for the totalizer wheels, so as to prevent accidental rotation of these wheels, when the frame 175 has been raised to a position such that the totalizer wheels are in an intermediate position in which they are spaced apart and cannot engage either with the feeler sectors 126, or with the teeth of the sliding racks 200. This locking mechanism is conveniently arranged and operates as follows.
A fixed part of the frame 182 carries a cross bar 183 (Fig. 9) which passes through the arms of a member 184 in the form of a. <B> U </B> of large dimension, which is thus free to rotate on the bar 183. The ends of the arms of the member 184 are connected so as to be able to pivot to a plate 185 whose ends are carried so that they can slide in grooves 186 formed in the ends of the flanges 175 of the sliding frame (fig. 12 and 13). The plate 185 has a series of teeth 187 projecting from its internal edge, these teeth being intended to come into engagement with the teeth 160 of the wheels 158.
When the frame 175 is lowered, as shown in solid lines in FIG. 12, due to the teeth 160 being able to engage with the teeth of the feeler sectors, the locking plate 185 can be removed by oscillation of the member 184 in the form of <B> U; </B> the (slow totalizers are then free to turn when the feelers and their sectors <B> 126 </B> are switched. On the contrary, when the frame 175 is raised to its middle or neutral position, a position shown in phantom in FIG. 12, the locking plate 185 is forced to slide inwards, so that these teeth engage the teeth of the counter wheels.
The lock plate is likewise removed, and the totalizer wheels are released when the frame 175 is lifted from its neutral position, so as to bring the totalizer wheels into engagement with the sliding racks 200.
The movements of these can be used (in various ways. As shown, when the wheels 151 are lifted up and engage with these bars, the latter slidably return all the totalizing wheels to zero. thus move, the racks can be used to lift characters by means of which it is possible to print the numerical values corresponding to the position in which the racks can slide. These can also be used to transport the successive responses from wheels 151 in other calculating wheel mechanisms, in which these responses can be added together or processed otherwise, as desired.
Fig. 14 shows a part of the mechanism comprising a set of totalizing wheels which work with the sliding racks 200, in combination with the positive device giving the answer either in printed form or otherwise. A set of wheels 1 ile (the answer is mounted on a frame 167 comprising triangular side plates (support it. The shaft 152a of totalizing wheels, and which can oscillate like an all around a shaft 168: a similar frame is also shown in Fig. 19. A connecting rod, by means of which the frame 167 can be tilted, is connected to the frame at 169.
The lever 171 oscillates as described around the shaft 170 to raise or lower the main set of the totalizer wheels 151 and has an arm 174 directed downwards; the latter is connected by a connecting rod 188 to an arm 189 of a lever with two arms pivoted in 190. The second arm 191 of this lever has a finger which projects towards a cam 192 mounted on a shaft 210. A depression 193 radial is located at a point on the periphery of this cam. The finger of the arm 191 can penetrate into this depression <B> 193 </B> when the lever 171 of the totalizing wheels is tilted down to put the response wheels 151 in engagement with the feeler sectors 126.
A part of the cam 192 is formed so as to release or carry the end of the lever 191 provided with a finger, when the totalizer wheels 151 have been raised in their middle or neutral position, and the other part of the cam is formed so as to act on this finger, so as to. oscillate the lever 171 of the totalizing wheels upwards, thus bringing these wheels into engagement with the meshes 200.
A connecting rod 194 extends from the triangular frame <B> 167 </B> which carries the 151st set of wheels up to a lever 195 mounted on the shaft 190. A second arm 196 of the lever 195 has a finger which is located behind the arm <B> 191 </B> (fig. 14) and which is intended to rest on a second cam 197 carried by the shaft 210.
This cam is formed so that the mechanism 151st with totalizing wheels, (it can function as a totalizer, will be raised to engage with the 1st racks 200, when the latter are ready to slide back to their zero positions, after having moved the main totalizer wheels 151 in the opposite direction, in order to return to their zero positions.
When the racks 200 then slide back to their zero positions, the totalizer wheels 151e- will be rotated in place, their position being in fact that transmitted by the racks from the main totalizer wheels 151, when these last had been reset. A locking device is provided for the 151st totalizer wheels, when these wheels are lowered and released from the racks.
The mechanism is put back in place when a member such as a wheel and a shaft is turned by hand or by any source of energy and at the end of the operations of entering the digits, the rotation of the this wheel or this shaft effecting the movements of the members which perform certain functions before the re-installation is complete, while at the same time the winding of the spring which acts on the shaft 130 is carried out. A horizontal shaft 22f operated at. the hand (fi- ,. 23) carries a crank at its end placed on the right side of the machine. This shaft rotates another transverse shaft 221, using (the gears.
An angle wheel 223.a is located at the end of the shaft 221 on the left side of the machine, this angle wheel grating with another angle wheel 221b mounted on a shaft 222 which is carried hori zontally in bearings along the left side of the machine (fig. 24.) Several angle wheels 223, 224, 225, 226 are suitably spaced from each other on this shaft 222, and a cam? 27 and a pinion <B> 28 </B> are located near its rear end. The angle wheel 224 meshes with an angle wheel 211 carried by the transverse camshaft 210.
The angle pinion 26 grates with an angle pinion 230 mounted on a shaft which carries a toothed wheel 231 meshing with another toothed wheel 32 mounted on a 2M shaft. The barrel which contains 1o spring. main is mounted on this shaft 233. This spring is arranged in such a way that while it can be raised by the rotation of the wheel 232). when turning the crank, the other effect of the spring tends to rotate a gear wheel 234 which meshes with a gear 235 mounted at the end of the shaft 130.
The. The spring is placed in such a way inside the barrel cooperating with the ratchet mechanism of appropriate construction, that the winding can only take place over the distance over which the spring has unwound, by means of the shaft 222 which is constantly rotated, over a predetermined arc, when the hand-operated replacement shaft 220 is rotated.
As can be seen, many parts of the mechanism automatically return to their initial positions, but other parts need to be effectively brought back to their zero positions. These members include in particular the selector carriage 60 and the sliding frame 175 carrying the main totalizing wheels 151. These members are brought back into place when the shaft 222 is rotated.
The selector carriage 60 is brought back to its initial position by a connecting rod 45a (fie. 25) fixed at one end to the oscillating lever -15, the free end i of which is connected to the carriage 60, the other end of the connecting rod 4.5a being connected to the pin 236 of a crank able to turn on an axis 237, and carried by a toothed wheel 238 which meshes with the toothed pinion 228 at the rear end of the shaft 222 (fie. 24 ).
When the carriage 60 is forced to slide back to its initial position, the L-shaped keys 70 and 71, (have been chosen and lowered as a result (the actuation of a key, are ( the new thrusts in their initial positions. This is effected by the following means: On the side of the selector mechanism actuated by (the buttons which are located towards the cams. a console 57 is carried by the selector frame 40 (fie. 1, 3 and 4).
The two bars 58 extend horizontally over <B> the </B> inner side (the ce sole; they are parallel and arranged and spaced one above the other, so that the top edge of each bar can hassc # r below the projection 70a or 71,1 of each key 70, 71, when these are in their initial upper positions. The free end 59 or left of each of these bars (fie. 3) is bevelled from its upper edge, and the extreme end of the bar is located in a place where it is remote from a set of keys 70, 71, when the latter are placed in correspondence with the hooks 91, 91a.
When, during the replacement of the mechanism, the carriage 60 is forced to slide back to its initial position, the bevelled ends of the fixed bars 58 will come into contact with those of the keys 70. 71 which have been chosen and lowered, in such a way that these keys will be pushed up again. The distance over which the carriage is forced to slide when replacing it is such that it is moved beyond the position in which it is originally held by the exhaust, so that the fixed bar 58 for repositioning can act on all the keys 7 (), 71 of all the sets of keys and push the latter into their initial positions.
The carriage is then left free (to move it a small distance in the direction (lr- -son (do not move it by step, this bringing the first set of key 70, 71 sliding below the ends (the rods: 31 operated by keys.
The chosen cams 80 are replaced by giving them all a rotational movement in the direction of the needles of a watch. views as in fig. 1, this movement being carried out by making the bar 92 oscillate with an arc greater than the maximum arc of which it would oscillate during re-installation (the cams as a result of the lowering (one touches 101.
This oscillation of the cams will be. sufficient for them to be grasped once more by their respective hooks 89. 89a, which will then maintain them in their initial "dead" positions. "This oscillation of replacing the bar 9? is effected by a movement from (the la, return rotation of shaft 222.
The angle wheel 225 of this shaft (fig. 24) meshes with a wheel (the angle mounted on a vertical shaft? 25a, the lower end of which gives a rotational movement to a wheel 92a (fig. 23) , by means of an angle gear and a shaft A crankpin is mounted on this wheel 92a and connected by a connecting rod 92b to the end of the bar 92.
Thus, with each revolution of the shaft 222, the wheel 9? Has made a complete revolution, and the bar 92 is lowered in an arc. bringing with it all the cams which have been chosen and brought into force, these cams being thus returned to their initial "dead" positions where they are held by hooks.
When replacing the parts, it is necessary to return the sliding totalizer frame 175 to its initial position on the oscillating frame 171. This is done as follows. The cam 327 of the shaft 222 (fig. 22) acts on a pin 239 at the end of an arm of a lever 2d0 which is pivoted to? Dl on an arm extending from the frame. fixed <B> 182 </B> (fig. 9 and 15).
The other arm 2-12 of this lever presses against the underside of a pin 243 which projects from the vertical part of a frame 2d-1. shaped <B> L, </B> which can slide on a vertical guide of the frame 18-) which supports the totalizer mechanism. A 2d6 groove is made in the horizontal arm 245 of this sliding frame.
The end 180a of the toothed lever is in this groove, and this lever engages with the groove <B> 135 </B> formed in the cam cylinder 134 by the rotation of which the totalizer frame 175 is df-placed. When the frame 244 is raised, the totalizer frame is free to slide the lon, -Y @ of the oscillating frame 171 and this sliding is obtained by the action of a cam 2-17 mounted on the shaft 222 (thread.
22) which acts on a lever 2-18 connected by a connecting rod 249 to a pin 250 mounted on the frame 7.75 (fit, - ,. 9).
A separate key not being provided to effect the oscillation of the carriage 60 which activates the cams 80, this movement. oscillation is derived from the movement resulting from the lowering of any of the keys 101. For this purpose, according to fig. 1 as well as the c # P # lateral vation of the fi. <B> 23, </B> Li provided a connecting rod 116 pivoted at 117 and re linked at its free end by a connecting rod 118 to the plate 57 mounted on the oscillating frame d0 which supports the selector carriage 60.
The connecting rod 116 touches an ankle 119 carried by one of the arms of one of the bent levers 112 which are connected by the plate 111, this plate being lowered and the bent levers 112 turn when a key 101 is lowered. The ankle 119 then communicates an oscillating movement to. the connecting rod 116 and oscillates the frame 40 of the carriage by means of the connecting rod <B> 118. </B>
The machine shown is fitted with a mechanism which makes it possible to adjust the transverse position of the totalizer wheels 151 for 1, <B> 175 </B> in relation to the figures according to which these totalizing wheels are put in position by rotation, and which must be treated in different ways, for example when these figures must be added in a note or in the total of the operations of 'one day, or if a discount has to be deducted.
The transport of the digits represented by the rotary adjustment of the totalizer wheels 151 is effected in a manner already indicated by means of the sliding racks 00, co-operating with suitable sets of totalizer wheels, similar to the set 151c;
these sets of totalizer wheels or totalizers can be raised so as to engage with the racks 200 or lowered so as to be released from these racks. as shown in fig. ld. These totalizers are shown in fig. <B> -27. </B>
The transverse po- sition control mechanism (the totalizer wheels <B> 151 </B> is indicated more particularly in figr. 15, 16 and 17, as well as at fi ,, -. 229 and <B> 23. </B>
According to the plan of the machine shown in fi-. 22. the upper end of a vertical shaft 270 carries a transverse piece 271 by means of (which the shaft can be rotated by hand. This shaft 270 also carries a]) indicator -2_ '72 which @e moves.
when the shaft turns. on a dial? 73 convunablenieut! "; 'l': ldlU #. An arm 27f is fixed on the shaft 270 (fig. 23) and below an angle wheel 275 and an angle pinion <B> 276. </B> The angle wheel 275 meshes with an angle wheel 277 attached to the end of a horizontal shaft 278. The angle pinion 276 meshes with an angle wheel 279 attached to the end of another horizontal shaft 280.
A transverse adjustment movement of a camshaft is effected by a pinion on this shaft 280 and on a rack. This camshaft controls the succession of movements of several totalizing mechanisms with respect to their engagement with the rack bars 200, these various totalizing mechanisms being shown in FIG. 27.
* The shaft 278 (fig. 15, 16 and 17) carries near its posterior end a disc 281 on the face of which are a pin 282 and a cam 283. A horizontal bar 284 carried by the fixed parts 182 so to slide transversely has an arm 285 directed downwards in which is formed a groove 286 intended to be biased by the pin 282 of the disc 281, when the shaft 278 is rotated. In this way, the bar 284 can be forced to slide a set distance to the left. A lever 288 is rotated at 287 on bar 284.
A series of notches 289 are formed in the underside of this lever 288, these notches are intended to grip the end 180a of the arm 180 which, as described, is pivoted on the transverse shaft 170 and allows a hand, a transverse sliding is given to the totalizer frame 175, when this lever <B> 180 </B> is raised with the teeth on its lower side out of engagement with cam groove 135. Notched lever 288 has a pin 290 projecting laterally. Another two-armed lever is pivoted at 291 at the sliding bar 984; one of its arms 292 is intended to come into engagement with the pin 290 of the lever 288; while the other arm 293 which is di rigé downwards has a groove 294 of the tines to be urged by the pin 282 of the disc 281.
A spring 295 acts on the lever 292, 293 in the manner shown in Figs. 16 and 17, so that this lever normally tends to lift the lever 288 in the position shown in FIG. 16, when the notches 289 that it includes are far from the end (read lever -180a.
When the shaft 278 has been rotated so as to bring the pin \ '82 into engagement with the groove in the arm 293 and with the groove of the arm 285 of the slide bar 284, the notched lever 88 is free to fall into the position shown in fig. 17, so as to come cry taken with the end of the lever 180a:
as the shaft 278 rotates, the neck bar 284 will smooth, dragging the total wheels with it <B> 151 </B> in a transverse position where they will be maintained according to the rotary adjustment given by the vertical shaft 270. At this moment, the cam 283 of the shaft 278 has actuated the end of the arm 296 with a lever pivoted in 297 on a fixed transverse frame member, the other arm 298 of which engages with a pin 251 carried by the frame 244 sliding vertically (Fig. 15).
The latter, which is lifted as well as the end of the lever 180a, releases the teeth of this lever from the groove 135 in the same way that the release of these teeth is carried out during the return (-it place de the way described above.
