Process for the manufacture of an artificial resin based on urea. The invention relates to the preparation of an artificial resin based on urea and formaldehyde.
A process is already known for obtaining synthetic resins by condensation of two bodies, one with a phenolic function, the other: with an al @ dehydic function in the presence of a large quantity of an alkaline earth chloride, and, mainly, of cailcium chloride CaaCl2 (French Patent No. 563777 of June 27, 1922).
The synthetic phenolic resin obtained by this process has, in intermediate states - and therefore before the manufacture of the final molded product - a high plasticity. The final molded product can be easily prepared by injecting the condensate product into a closed mold:
It clearly results from the observations made by the Applicant Company - as well as from the work carried out in its laboratories that the alkaline earth chlorides used in excess (see French Patent No. 563,777 and American Patent No. 1643447) possess independently of their quality of 'condensing agent, a powerful dispersoid power and the high plasticity of the products obtained undoubtedly come from the state. of extreme molecular division of the colloid formed.
It was believed that this reaction was only applicable to the formation of phenol formaldehyde resins; Now, it has just been observed by the Applicant that alkaline earth chlorides could also be used successfully for the production of urea formaldehyde resins.
The industrial manufacture of urea formaldehyde resins currently comes up against difficulties of two kinds: 1. Difficulties in obtaining a sufficiently hydrophobic intermediate resin. that is, resistant to hot water.
2. Difficulties in obtaining a product sufficiently plastic to be used for molding. On the other hand, the condensation processes, as described in most of the patents relating to these products and which attempt to solve these difficulties, are. extremely complicated and require such precision that they may be considered to come more within the scope of the laboratory than that of industry proper.
By the process according to the present invention, these manufacturing difficulties are avoided. The product for molding obtained is of such plasticity that it allows easily and under the same conditions as those employed for the phenolic resins, the molding of all parts by the injection process (see US patent no. 1643447).
It is especially remarkable that the products obtained are completely insoluble in water and stable vis-à-vis .de hot water. They therefore keep their shine and their polish and resist better. any distortion than all of the hitherto known urea-formaldehyde condensation products.
The new process for the manufacture of urea formaldehyde resin according to the present invention is characterized in that urea is reacted under cold conditions with formaldehyde in aqueous solution containing 5 to. 60%, preferably about 20%, of calcium chloride based on the weight of the formaldehyde solution employed; the mixture obtained is then heated, then washed with water. It is not necessary to work in a vacuum.
The product obtained has properties comparable to those of the product obtained by the phenol-formaldehyde condensation with the addition of alkaline-earth chlorides. It is plastic and malleable when cold and perfectly insoluble in water.
Thanks to its high plasticity, it is possible, by simple rolling or rolling, to incorporate large quantities of fillers into the product. The product can be used for making castings either alone or with the addition of fillers (see US Patent No. 1643447).
By way of example, the following operating mode can be indicated, as giving good results: The following mixture by weight is brought together for six hours, at rest and in the cold:
EMI0002.0023
Urea <SEP> technical <SEP> 1000
<tb> Formalin <SEP> to <SEP> 30% <SEP> 3000
<tb> containing <SEP> in <SEP> solution <SEP> chloride
<tb> of <SEP> calcium <SEP> 600 At the end of this time, the above mixture is brought to the boil for 30 minutes, then acidified using a any acid, weak or strong, and it is again brought to the boil for four hours.
The product is then precipitated boiling in cold water and the cooled mass constitutes the final product exhibiting the properties indicated above.
