Discharge vessel with hot cathode and gas or steam filling, in particular with control grid. The invention relates to a discharge vessel with a hot cathode and gas or vapor filling, in particular with a control grid. Such discharge vessels, in which an arc-like discharge takes place between the anode and cathode, are suitable for carrying large currents respectively. transferred to. A control grid can be used to control the arc-like discharge between anode and hot cathode. For large currents, cathodes of considerable size and weight are required.
For this purpose, it is advantageous to use indirectly heated cathodes which have a large, electron-emitting surface. It is difficult to fix these heavy cathodes in the discharge vessel with the help of their strong power leads, especially since they have to be relatively long, on the one hand, so as not to subject the glass to disadvantageous heating, and on the other, to achieve that the hot cathode and we sentlichen also the entire discharge path between the hot cathode and anode are arranged so that charges on the vessel wall are not disruptive to the discharge BEZW. the onset of the same can act.
If the cathode is carried by the long power supply lines melted into the cathode base, there is a risk that considerable forces and, in particular, bending moments will be transferred to the melt-down points during transport or even in the event of vibrations caused by the very small movements made by the cathode will.
However, it is also important that the cathode be secured as stably as possible, because relatively small movements and the associated changes in position between the cathode and anode and, if applicable, the control grid, may disproportionately change the properties of the discharge vessel, the discharge ratios. These relationships are taken into account in an advantageous manner by the invention.
According to the invention, the device is made such that the spherical part 1 of the discharge vessel, in which the indirectly heated cathode consisting of several hollow spaces and surrounded by heat shield cylinders is located, is provided with two glass necks one carries the cathode and the other the anode, and that the cathode, which is combined with the heat shield cylinders to form a structural unit, is supported by support struts fastened to the neck of the cathode glass by means of a clamp,
while it is connected to its power supply lines melted into the pinch foot of the glass neck by flexible connectors.
Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of the discharge vessel according to the invention; Fig. 2 shows part of the cathode; Fig. 3 shows an enlarged section through the anode part of the discharge vessel.
In Fig. 1, 1 is the wall of the discharge vessel Ent. This discharge vessel ends in feet 2 and 3 leading inwards. The lower foot 3 is closed by means of the fusion 4. The upper foot 2 carries a narrow, rearward-leading tube 5 in the middle, which is open at the end. Approximately in the middle between the inner end of the foot 2 and the point at which it is fused to the envelope, there is a transverse wall 6 made of glass, which carries a tube 7 which is closed at the top.
A rigid electrical conductor is fused into the tube 7, which leads rather loosely through the opening in the tube 5 and is connected to a suitable anode. The rigid conductor 8 is connected to a movable conductor 10 which connects it to an external circuit.
The control grid has the shape of a perforated cylinder 11, which is closed at its lower end and is held in its position by being fastened to the foot by means of a metal member 1 2 . A power supply 13 leads from the grid through a foot 14 which closes the outer end of a laterally directed glass tube 15. In order to reduce the ignition voltage of the discharge vessel, metallic extensions 16 are located on the lower end of the grid, and these extensions carry an ignition ring 17.
The cathode 18 be seated a heater of the usual shape (not shown), of which only one lead can be seen in FIG. 2, and a plurality of rigid disks 20 is pushed over this heater (suitably isolated from it).
These panes are covered in the usual way with an electron-emitting material, for example barium carbonate, in order to produce the amount of electrons necessary for the transport of electricity through the discharge vessel. One or more heat shields 21 are fastened over the disks, through which the electrons can exit and the positive ions can enter. The upper end of these shields is closed by a circular = shaped plate 22, which serves as a support for one end of the inner heating device (not shown).
The lower end of the cathode is closed by three or more heat shields 20 ', which have flanges projecting perpendicularly at the edge and which are attached to the inner surface of the associated heat shields 21.
This cathode has a considerable amount of metal and for this reason is very heavy, especially in the case of larger discharge vessels. In order to secure the cathode in the discharge vessel, a rigid framework is used which consists of U-shaped metal struts, which are preferably welded onto the surface of the outermost heat shield 21 and on a metal band 24 are attached. In Fig. 1, three struts of equal spacing are shown as the carrier of the cathode; however, their number can be changed as needed according to the weight and size of the cathode. The ring 24 is pushed over the foot 3.
This ring must be sufficiently wide and rest on the foot with a large surface. Between the cathode and the ring 24, two or more heat shields 25 are expediently fastened to the frame 23 be in order to protect the fusion of the foot 3 against the thermal radiation of the lower end of the cathode. The heating current is fed through a movable, multi-core cable 19 to which the rigid inlet 29 is attached. This introduction 29 is fused into the fusion 4 and ends in a flexible cable 30. The other end (not shown) of the heating device is connected to the upper cap 22, so that the cathode or working current partly also serves as a heating current.
The work current is fed to the cathode through two flexible, multi-core cables 26 which are connected in parallel and lead to the inlets 27 star ren. These introductions 27 are also melted into the fusion 4 and lead to flexible cables 28. The heavy cathode, the weight of which can rise from 1/2 kg for small discharge vessels to 5 kg and more for larger discharge vessels, is carried out the frame held rigidly in place and the mechanical stress on the power supply is reduced to a minimum by the support device.
The fact that the inlets 19 and 26 are movable means that the weight of the cathode has no influence whatsoever on the rigid conductors 27 and 29 and the glazing is therefore not stressed. The shape of the tube 5 also prevents the discharge from attacking the conductor 8 melted into the foot 7, so that the glass is prevented from cracking at this point as well.
The device described is preferably used in electrostatically controlled, gas-filled discharge vessels that contain an ionizable gas, for example inactive gases or vapors. As already stated, the pressure of the gas or vapor is selected such that the discharge vessel can transmit high currents and the ignition of the discharges is effected by the control member 16. AC voltage is generally applied to the anode so that the discharge is always under the influence of the grid at the beginning of each phase.
The holding of the cathode by means of the framework 23 holds the cathode firmly in its position, even if there is a greater distance between it and the power supply, so that the characteristics of the discharge vessel are always reproducible. Since there are no internal stresses in the glass at the ends of the discharge vessel, the described facility of the discharge vessels increases the service life considerably.
