Description

Isopropylmethylhy- drozimtaldehyd, Naphtliylmethylketori, Trini- trotertiäi-butyltol iiol (1ziinstlichei-Moschus) iisw.

Process for the production of a fuel that improves the smell of the exhaust gases from internal combustion engines. As is well known, the exhaust gases from petrol engines form a great nuisance due to their sharp and bizarre smell, especially in garages, near inhabited rooms or in streets that are enclosed on both sides by high rows of houses and in which the gas exchange is less rapid fully equip. This smell is due to very small amounts of half-burned oil and fuel and occurs especially when the engine is idling or when the engine is set to retarded, i.e. especially when starting.

In the case of explosion engines, which are used almost exclusively in the automotive industry, the engine is also left running. low air deficiency, which leads to increased fuel consumption and the generation of particularly strong-smelling exhaust gases due to the impossibility of complete combustion of the lubricating oil pumped by the piston, but with a correspondingly higher ignition speed of the mixtures of around 100 /, air deficiency leads to the greater performance of the engine.

It has already been suggested that these foul-smelling exhaust gases be eliminated by absorption with active carbon or similar substances or by switching on catalytic converters. in order to cause post-combustion in the exhaust gas flow, which is only possible if there is excess air in the gas mixture. All of these attempts have not been successful in practice.

It has now been found that it is possible to give the exhaust gases from internal combustion engines a pleasant smell by adding aromatic-smelling bodies to the fuel. Surprisingly, a large number of such compounds, both natural and synthetic, are not burned under the conditions prevailing in the explosion engine, but rather give the exhaust gases a pleasant odor,

the pungent smell of half-burned oil respectively. Can change gasoline-oil mixture as desired.

Examples of such odorous bodies include the following: camphor, camphor waste oil, borneol, boronyl acetate, clove oil, ionone, coumarin, indole, skatole, acetophenone, methylacetophenone, 4-methoxyacetophenone, para-cresyl acetate, antranilic acid ethyl ester,

Isopropylmethylhydrozimtaldehyde, naphthylmethylketori, tri-troterti-butyltol iiol (iinstlichei musk) iisw.

Such quantities of these substances are sufficient that are not yet able to give the fuel itself a pronounced odor to achieve a distinct smell effect in the exhaust gas. As a rule, about 1 gram per liter can be added to the fuel, but this quantity can in some cases it can even be reduced to 1/10 gr and less.Of course, mixtures of the substances mentioned can also be used.

As has also been found, the artificial musk fragrances and the arylalkyl ketones of the odorous bodies listed above occupy a special position, since with them a particularly well perceptible odor improvement of the exhaust gases can be achieved and because in many cases significantly lower amounts to induce the desired effect is sufficient.

Examples of such musk bodies are: - 2.4. 6-trinitro-1-methyl-3-tert. butylbenzene, 2.4.6-trinitro-1.3-dimethyl-5-tert. butylbenzene, 2.4.6-trinitro-3-methyl-5-tert. butylanisole, 3.

5-Diriitro-2,4-dimethyl-6-tert. butyl acetophenon, dinitro-tert. butyl-para-cymene. Surprisingly, these compounds are not burned in internal combustion engines despite the nitro groups contained in the molecules. These give the exhaust gases a particularly pleasant odor and 0.1 gram per liter of liquid fuel is sufficient to achieve the desired odor improvement.

In some cases this amount can even be reduced to ½ gr per liter of fuel. It goes without saying that, and that applies mutatis mutandis to the arylalkyl ketones described below, fragrance mixtures can also be used which are based on these particularly good-smelling compounds.

As already mentioned, this particularly favorable effect can also be achieved with the aid of aryl alkyl ketones, such as, for example, with aeetophenone, methylacetophenone, 4-methoxyacetophenone, 1-naplithylmethyl ketone, 2-naphthylethyl ketone, and derivatives and homologues of these compounds.

These concretes can be added to the fuel in the quantities specified above for the artificial musk bodies.

For the desired purpose, of course, it is not necessary to start from the pure fragrance bodies, but rather the raw products obtained during operation or the pre- and post-runnings obtained during distillation which still contain proportions of the odorants mentioned can be used.

All consumables generally used in internal combustion engines can be improved by the additives mentioned and only the amounts have to be varied somewhat, depending on whether light or heavy oils are used as consumables. Naturally, the exhaust gases from gas engines can also be given a better smell if traces of the odorous substances mentioned are added to the propellant.
