Description

Process for the manufacture of items made of steel or cast iron that have a low tendency to rust even in seawater and moist soil. The invention relates to an improvement in the process for the manufacture of articles made of steel or cast iron, which has been described in the main patent, and in the additives. Such metals are used, the corrosion products of which are gel-like, viscous, are coherent, harden favorably, glue forming cracks and passages in the hydroxide skin and thus block the corrosion agent to the material to be protected.

Magnesium, nickel and aluminum were proposed as such elements in the main patent.

Further work has shown that the elements titanium and. Vanadium work in a similar way to the elements magnesium, nickel and aluminum, and indeed they are not only equivalent to these elements, especially aluminum, but even #berl. 'With this finding, it is therefore possible to replace aluminum, as well as magnesium and nickel, with titanium or vanadium.

The favorable influence of these two elements could not be foreseen due to their electrochemical or chemical behavior.

The subject of the invention is .demnach a method for producing objects made of steel or cast iron, which have a low tendency to rust even in seawater and moist soil, in which the material such elements are added whose electrolytic potential is negative compared to the constant oxidation potential of the corrosion agent, i.e. less than about.

0.5 volts, but positive against the electrolytic potential of steel and cast iron, and in addition with at least one of the elements titanium in amounts of about 0.1 to 1% and vanadium in amounts of about 0.1 to 0.5 % alloy wind.

The elements copper in amounts of up to about 1%, arsenic, antimony and tin in amounts of about 0.05 to 5% can be used individually or collectively as elements whose electrolytic potential corresponds to the condition mentioned.

Another economically beneficial effect of titanium and vanadium, through which steels alloyed with these elements distinguish themselves from steels containing aluminum, is that the ability of titanium or vanadium-alloyed steels to increase resistance to attack by water to oppose

a short time after the onset of corrosion in a considerable reduction in the rate of corrosion comes into effect. So - the rate of corrosion is already about 20% after 14 days in seawater, in river,

water about 40% less than that of aluminum-alloyed copper-nickel steels. The steels containing titanium and vanadium are also characterized by a completely uniform rusting of the surface exposed to the corrosion agent. Local corrosion, dent-like and hole-like pitting or notch-like indentations, which cause a reduction in the mechanical properties of the steel, do not occur.

Also in foundry technology and. In a metallurgical relationship, the possibility of replacing aluminum with titanium or vanadium offers advantages insofar as steels with titanium and vanadium are easier to process than those with the addition of aluminum.

The two elements exert the described effect even at very low levels, namely when at least one of the metals is present in an amount of 0.1%. The number of metals in terms of their corrosion-inhibiting influence is unlimited. However, an addition of 1% titanium and an addition of 0.5% vanadium are not exceeded, since a higher addition does not offer any particular advantages.

The following table shows examples of the effects of: Titanium and vanadium additives:

In river water, the numbers are even cheaper. The reduction in the rate of corrosion, expressed as a percentage, is around 40% for copper-nickel-titanium steel, and around 2.8% for copper-nickel-vanadium steel compared to an aluminum-alloyed copper steel.
