Description

Process for the preparation of a tanning substance. The acidic condensation process described in main patent no. 156126 gives unsatisfactory results in cases where the applied dioxydiphenyl sulfone or the aromatic sulfonic acid used have become too inert due to appropriate substitution; the poor solubility of certain dioxydiphenyl sulfones can also prevent the reaction from proceeding well.

It has now been found that this difficulty can be countered if the reaction products obtained by alkaline condensation from dioxydiphenyl sulfones and formaldehyde are subsequently heated with aromatic sulfonic acids in acidic solution.

According to the process forming the subject of this patent, a product which is clearly soluble in water in any ratio and is valuable for tanning can be obtained if 4,4'-dioxydiphenylsulfone is condensed in concentrated, caustic alkali solution with formaldehyde, then acidified and with phenyl monoglycol ether -p-sulfonic acid is further heated in a strongly acidic solution. After tanning, the new tanning material produces leathers with excellent fillings and excellent lightfastness. In dilute, aqueous solutions, ferric chloride produces a blue-violet precipitate.

Example: 120 parts of 4,4'-Dioxydiphenylsulfou-5-carbinols obtained by treating 100 parts of 4,4'-Dioxydiphenylsulfon with 80 parts of 40% sodium hydroxide solution, 80 parts of water and 48 parts for 24 hours Formaldehyde at 500 and subsequent careful precipitation with hydrochloric acid,

are with 100 parts of phenyl monoglycol ether-p-sulfoic acid (obtained by heating 100 parts of phenol monoglycol ether and 110 parts of 93% sulfuric acid at 110 0 to water solubility) and 50 parts of water for 1 ½ hours 105-110 0 heated.

After condensation, the product is easily soluble in water and, for tanning purposes, is first adjusted by neutralization so that the broth reacts in a Congo-neutral manner.
