Process for flame-retarding textile fibers By reacting at high temperature with phosphorus pentachloride ammonium chloride, in proportions such that for each phosphorus atom there is less than one nitrogen atom, halides are obtained of phosphonitrile telomers of crude formula: P 1 ci 2n + 3, optionally mixed with polymers of formula (PNC12) n. Such products are described in French patent 1 157 097.
If one reacts on these telomeres, possibly in admixture with polymers of formula (PNC12., Ammonia and methyl alcohol, one obtains products soluble in the; such products are described in the patent. French 1 225 073; they can be used for the flame retardation of textile fibers. For this purpose the fibers are impregnated with aqueous solutions containing these products and then subjected to a heat treatment between 100 and 200 C.
This flame-retardant process has the advantage of not causing the shades of the direct dyes to change and of not harming the feel of the fibers; the effects obtained are resistant to dry cleaning and repeated washing It has been found that the quality of the fireproofing obtained by this process can be further improved by combining it with a treatment by means of a reactive derivative with high nitrogen content. By reactive derivative with a high nitrogen content is meant a compound capable of condensing on -OH or -NH- groups and of which the nitrogen content is such that after condensation on said groups the remainder of the molecule of the reactive derivative contains at least one minus 20% nitrogen.
Reactive compounds of this kind are, for example, the following: hexamethylolmelamine, methylated hexamethylolmelamine, cyanuric chloride, tri-aziridinylphosphineoxide, tri-methylaziridinylphosphineoxide.

Catalysts and wetting products can be added to the bath in the treatment baths. waterproofing agents, fungicides, softeners or any other - t intended to modify the properties of fibers. It is probable that during the subsequent heat treatment of the reactive compound with high nitrogen content, either the -OH or -NH- groups of the fiber will react either with the flame retardant groups or with both kinds of groups.
this process has the advantage of increasing the rate of fixing the flame retardant to the fibers and, for the same amount of fixed flame retardant, the nitrogen content of the treated fibers; As a result, it is possible to reduce the quantity of flame retardant to be used in order to obtain a determined result or to improve the flame retardant effect obtained with a determined quantity of flame retardant.
