Telephone station with selector disc. The object of the present invention is a selector telephone station. This station is characterized in that it comprises means automatically printing on a strip of paper. The number dialed during a call.

Fig. 16 is a view from below; Fig. 17 shows a second example of a contact carrier disc.
The station shown comprises a telephone apparatus 1 and a call recording apparatus enclosed in a box 2 and electrically connected to the telephone apparatus by a cable 9.
Between the selector disc 3 and the dial 4, bearing the ten digits 1 to 0, is fixed a contact carrier disc 5 which is shown on a larger scale in FIG. 4 to 6. This disc 5 is made of an insulating material, for example galalith, and its periphery is staggered in ten parts of different radii. This disc is arranged relative to the dial 4 so that its smallest radius is, opposite the number 1, and that each step of its periphery is opposite another number, the largest radius being opposite of the number 0.
The thickness of the disc 5 also varies and, as is particularly apparent from FIG. 6 showing a development @of the periphery of the disc, the latter is composed of five sectors of different heights, each sector extending over an angle corresponding to two rungs of the periphery of the disc, the highest sector being next to the numbers 1 and 2 on the dial and the lower sector 1e being next to the numbers 9 and 0.
A contact piece 6 is placed in each rung of the periphery of the disc 5, so that it is exactly opposite the corresponding number of the dial 4. To each contact piece 6 is welded a conductor 7 passing through the thickness of the disc radially towards the center. In the central opening 8 of disc 5, the different conductors 7 are connected: to cable 9.
The lower face of the selector disc 3 carries an annular element formed of two rings 10 and 11 of insulating material, and of a conductive ring 12 (FIG. 7). The rings 10 and 11 are divided into five, sectors of different heights extending over corresponding angles. at the angles of the sectors - of different heights - of the contact carrier disc 5. In each sector of the ring 11 are hollowed out, two grooves 13 and 14, in each of which can slide a contact piece 15.
The sectors of different heights of the rings 10 and 11: are cut in such a way that the two superimposed rings, as shown, in FIG. 7, fit exactly one on the other and together form an annular element with parallel faces, carrying in its thickness the ten sliding contact pieces 15.
Each contact piece 15 has a crescent-shaped actuation button 16 and a rod 17 engaged between the two rings 10 and 11 and having a small groove 18 through which a pin 19 carried by the rings 10 and 11. The operating buttons 16 protrude slightly into the holes 20 of the selector disc 3.
The grooves 13 and 14 of the ring 11 are made at a height such that the rods 17, by inserting the finger into an opening 20 of the selector disc, can touch the upper edge of the periphery of the contact carrier disc. 5, to come into contact with the contact parts 6.
The rods 17 of the different parts 1: 5 vary in length, depending on the radius of the dif ferent sectors -du disc 5 with which they cooperate; the rod 17a of the part carried below the opening 20 -of the se-drive disc, corresponding to the number 0. being the shortest and that 17b of the part below the opening, corresponding to the number 1, being the longest.
By introducing, for example, the finger into the hole 20a corresponding to the number 0, the rod 17a. , of the part 15, arranged below this hole, makes contact with the contact 6 placed on the periphery of the sector @du say that 5, having the largest radius, but the lowest height. In. turning the selector disc until you reach the stop 21 with your finger, the rod 17a, which is the shortest, does not touch the other contacts 6 of the disc 5.
By turning the disc 3 in this way, its opening 20b, which corresponds in the rest position to the number 1, for example, comes to rest up to the number 3 approximately. As the rod 17b of the part 1.5, carried below this opening 20b, is the longest, it must be able to rotate above the disc 5 up to the sector of this disc which is opposite the number 3 of the plate. For this reason, disk 5 is divided into sectors of different heights.
The rod 17b is placed at the highest level, between the two rings 10 and 11, so that it can touch the upper edge of the sector 5a of the disc .5. When the selector disc rotates, this rod 17b can then slide above all the other sectors of the disc 5 which are less high. All these sectors will be covered with a sheet of mica, in order to prevent contact from being established between a rod 17 and a contact 6, when this rod rotates with the sector above. disc 5.
Each contact part 15 is subjected to the action of a spring 22 fixed, on the one hand, to the selector disc 3 and, on the other hand, to the actuating button 16 and tending to move the rod 17 away from the contact. 6 correspondent; but, when the finger is introduced into the opening 20 of the selector disc, the part 15 is moved with the finger, against the spring 22, and its rod 17 makes contact, for a moment, with the part of contact 6 arranged opposite it.
The lower face of the stop 21 carries a sliding contact 23, cooperating with two contact blades 24 and 24 '. A spring 25 normally moves the contact 23 away from the blades 24, but, when the selector disc is turned to dial a telephone number, the finger inserted into the opening 20 of the disc 3 pushes the contact 23 and applies the latter for an instant. against the two blades 24 and 24 'and connects them electrically.
Another conductive blade 26 is fixed below the selector disc 3 and is constantly in contact with the conductor ring 1,2 carried. by disc 3.
The recording device, shown particularly in fig. 8 and 9 comprises a base plate 27 on which is fixed a support 28 of insulating material -and having the shape of a part of a circular cylinder. This support carries, in two superposed rows, eleven electromagnets 29, the cores 30 of which are carried radially by a plate 31 fixed to the support 28. Each electromagnet cooperates with an armature 32, of soft iron, carried by a rod. 33, in steel.
The rods 33 carrying the armatures of the electromagnets of the upper row are articulated with one of their ends to studs 34, secured to a semicircular piece 3-5 fixed 'to the support 28, while the rods 3.3 , carrying the armatures of the electromagnets of the lower row, are articulated with -des; studs 36, carried by a semi-circular part 37 fixed to the support 28.
The other end of each rod 33 is articulated at one end of a connecting rod 38, which passes radially through the support 28, and the other end of which is articulated to a bar 39, articulated with its lower end to a stud 40 carried by a part in an arc of a circle 41. Each of the eleven frames is therefore connected by the members 33 and 38, to a bar 39 carrying a character 42. Ten of these bars carry, as characters, the numbers from 1 to 0, while the character of the eleventh bar consists of a line or other special sign, the purpose of which will be explained later.
The bars 39, carried by the circle 41, are suitably curved. The characters strike towards a common center when the electromagnets are excited and attract their armatures. A return-spring 43 is interposed between each bar 39 and the .support 28, to remove the bar and the corresponding armature in the rest position as soon as the circuit .de the corresponding electromagnet is interrupted.
One of the ends of the winding 44 of each electromagnet is connected to a common terminal 45 carried by the support 28 from which a conductor 46 leaves towards one of the poles of a source of electric current. The other ends of the windings. ten electromagnets are each connected by wires 7 to one of the contacts 6 of disk 5.
A tape of recording paper 47 is wound on a reel 48 carried rotatably between two supports 49 and 50. From the reel 48 the tape 47 passes over a plate 51 carried by arms 5,2 and 5,3 fixed to the arms. supports 49 and 50, and then winds up on a second spool 54. The tape is kept pressed against the plate 51 by means of two leaf springs. 55 leaving between them a space in which the character bars strike 39.
As a telephone number is usually composed of five digits, a device is provided which moves the coil 48 along its axis after a digit has been struck until all five digits are printed one. next to each other.
This device for moving the coil includes an electromagnet 56 carried by a support 5 7 fixed to the wall of the box 2. This electromagnet cooperates with a frame 58 articulated to the support 57 and whose free end carries an arm. 59 at the end of which is articulated a pawl 60 cooperating with a ratchet 61. One end of the winding of the electromagnet 56 is connected to the common terminal 45, while the other end terminates with the 24 'blade on the telephone device.
The ratchet 61 is fixed on an axis 62 carrying a helical wheel 63 which meshes with a worm 64 whose axis 65 carries a cam 66.
The electromagnet 56 is excited each time the selector disk of the telephone apparatus is rotated and the finger pushes the contact 23 against the two blades 24 and 24 '. The attracted frame 58 actuates the pawl 60 which advances the ratchet 61 by one tooth which, in turn, rotates the axle 65 via the wheel 63 and the worm 64. The cam 66 has two eccentric surfaces 67 and 68 against which a rod 69 of a slide 70 can be applied which can move in a slide 71 and carries at its end a roller 72 in contact with the flange of the paper reel 48, applied against the roller by means of a spring 73. The gear ratio between the wheel 63 and the worm 64 is chosen so that the cam 66 makes a half turn while the ratchet advances by five teeth.
While turning the selector disk five times for the five digits of a telephone number, the cam 66 makes a U-turn, i.e. when turning the disk 3 for the first digit, the rod 69 is applied against the smallest radius of an eccentric 67 or 68, and, each time the stop 21 is touched, the cam advances by pushing the slide 70 and thus the spool 48 to the left to the against spring 73.
The position shown in fig. 1.0 shows the rod 69 applied against the top of the eccentric: the last of the five digits a. just been struck and, when you reach the stopper 21 with your finger for the fifth time, the cam advances in the direction of the arrow and the spring 73 returns the spool 48 and the slide 70 to the right until the rod 69 is applied against the smallest radius of the eccentric 67.
For the advancement of the recording tape, the following mechanism has been provided. The axis 62 carries a cam 74 having two on eccentric faces 75 and 76. It is assumed that the ratchet 61 has ten teeth. A lever 77, articulated on an arm 78 carried by the support 50, has one of its ends applied against the surface of the cam 74 by means of a spring 79. At the other end of the lever 77 is articulated a rod 80. whose lower end forms a hook 81 intended to engage in pegs 82 carried by the flange of the coil 54.
Figs. 10 and 12 show cam 74 in the position it is after the fifth digit of a telephone number has been entered. As soon as the finger turning the selector disk of the telephone device comes to a stop against the stop 21, the electromagnet 56 is energized, the ratchet 60 advances by one tooth and turns the cam 74, so that the end:
of the lever 77, under the action of the spring 79, falls from the top of the eccentric 76 in the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 10, so that traction is exerted on the rod 80 and its hook 81, engaged behind a peg 82, rotates the spool 54, which advances the paper web, which is now ready to receive a new one. printing a phone number. On such a new print, cam 74 rotates until the top of eccentric surface 75 comes below lever 77.
During this movement of the cam, the lever 77 pivots to return to the position shown in solid lines in fig. 10 and the rod 80 is lowered so that its hook 81 engages behind the next che town. A spring 83 maintains the hook in engagement with the pegs, and a pawl 89 carried by the spool cooperates with a ratchet 90 carried by the pin 91 to prevent rotation of the spool in the opposite direction. Fig. 13 shows a diagram of the electrical connections of the installation. The positive pole of the current source 84 is connected to the blade 26 constantly in contact with the ring 12 carried by the selector disc.
This ring is connected, by the pins 19, to each of the sliding contacts 15. Each of the contacts 6 carried by the spiral-shaped disc 5 is connected to one of the electromagnets 29 of the recording device. The contact 26 is connected to the blade 24 and the blade 24 'to the electromagnet 56. The contact 26 is also connected to. a contact 85, which can be applied, by a button 87, against the contact 86, connected to the eleventh of the electromagnets 29. All the electromagnets are, on the other hand, connected to a common terminal 45 which is itself connected at the negative pole of the source.
The operation of the described installation is as follows: Suppose we want to call the telephone number 50.312. As usual, we push our finger into the opening 20 of the selector disc which is above the number 5 on the dial 4. When the finger enters the opening, it acts against the actuating button 16. contact 1.5 carried by the selector disc below this opening and applies the rod 17 of this contact between the contact 6, facing it, on the disc 5.
The circuit of the corresponding electromagnet 29 is therefore closed, its armature is attracted and the character bar which bears the number 5 is struck against the recording strip on the left side thereof to print this number. As soon as we start to. turn the selector disc 3, this circuit is interrupted, the character bar is withdrawn and, arriving with his finger on the stop 21, the sliding part 28 is moved and electrically connects the two contacts 24 and 24 '.
The circuit of the electromagnet 56 is therefore closed and, as described above, the pawl 60 rotates the cam 66 through a certain angle. When striking the first digit 5 of the mentioned number, the rod 69 was applied against the smallest radius of an eccentric of the cam 66. The rotation of this cam therefore acted on the rod 69 and the roller 72 acted. , in turn, on spool 48 to move it to the left before the second digit is struck.
The same operations are therefore repeated for each of the digits of the telephone number formed with the selector disc. After printing the fifth digit, the organs are again in the position shown in fig. -10, and, when the finger abuts for the fifth time against the part 23, the hook 81 rotates the. reel 54 and advance the recording tape.
If the telephone whose number you have dialed with the selector disk is busy, or if you have entered the wrong number, you have the possibility of crossing out the stored number or of placing a specific sign on the number. recorded by means of the eleventh character bar provided in the recording device.
A pressure is then exerted on the button 87 of the telephone apparatus, which closes the circuit of an electromagnet 29 between the two contacts 85 and 86, and the eleventh character bar bearing for example the sign of a dash hits this line on the recorded digit which is to be crossed out, indicating that no communication has been obtained for this digit.
It goes without saying that an ink ribbon can pass over the recording tape although such a ribbon has not been shown. This ribbon could be moved either by hand by a crank outside the box 2, or automatically as in ordinary typewriters, by means of a mechanical connection between the character bars and winding cylinders, or else by a pulley added to the roll of paper and actuating the ink ribbon when this roll moves.
The box 2 of the recording apparatus is provided with a window 88 through which the coil 48 can be seen to ascertain whether the apparatus is functioning normally.
The invention is not limited to what has been shown in the drawing. In particular, the recording apparatus could vary from that which has been described and illustrated. An electric typewriter of another type could. be used and the movement of the reel carrying the recording tape and the advancement of the tape could be done in another way.
Fig. 14 shows a variant of a selector disk. As it is possible, with an ordinary selector disc, to actuate it by grasping it by its edge without inserting the finger into its openings and thus preventing a recording of the called number from occurring, this edge has been cut off by a 3 'drive disc leaving only notches instead of circular openings. It is then no longer possible to operate the disc se-player without at the same time acting on the contacts 15 and producing the recording.
A third embodiment of the selector disk and of the contact carrier disk is shown in FIGS. 15 to 17. The finger openings of the selector disc 3 are filled with push buttons 93 in enamelled insulating material bearing the numbers 1 to 0. The buttons 93 are fixed on leaf springs 94 secured to a suitable ring 95 to the selector disc 3. The leaf springs 94 each comprise a contact 96. The latter are arranged on a spiral line, so that the contact corresponding to the number 1 is closest to the center of the disc 3.
A ring of insulating material 97 disposed concentrically to the selector disc carries contacts 98 also located on a spiral line so that each contact 98 is located opposite a push button 93. A brush-spring can rub on the ring 95. 26 'carried by a caliper 99 secured to the insulating ring 97. Each of the contacts 98 is in connection, by an electromagnet 29, with the common terminal 45. The caliper 99 is also connected to this terminal and comprises the coil of the electromagnet 56 in its circuit. The conductors 7 of the contacts 98 and of the caliper 99 are joined together in the cable 9.
The caliper 99 is, on the other hand, connected to the contact 24.
When dialing a subscriber number, the button 93 corresponding to the first digit to "turn" is pressed and, as usual, the finger inserted into the opening of the selector disc. As a result, the circuit of the corresponding electromagnet 29 is closed in a manner analogous to that described above. The actuation of the contact 23 of the stop 21 at the end of each stroke of the selector disk is the same as in the example according to FIG. 2.
One can realize the great utility that the described station can. have for phone subscribers. The subscriber has. always the possibility of controlling calls. that were made with his device, for example, what numbers he called on a certain day, or to observe possible abuses.
