Hydraulic clutch device for power transmission. The present invention relates to a hydraulic clutch device for power transmission comprising two associated turbines, one driving, the other receiving. This device is characterized by the fact that the blades of the turbines, in the engaged state of the device, are bathed by a liquid ring ensuring the drive of one by the other, and located in the rotating housing. common to said turbines, the liquid, in the engaged state of the device, flowing in a continuous manner from this ring and being reintroduced therein without pressure, means being provided to vary the thickness of the liquid ring and, consequently, the slipping of the clutch.
The rotating casing of the driving and receiving turbine assembly preferably comprises at least one overflow orifice limiting the level to a predetermined height.
The vanes of the receiving turbine are preferably carried by a disc with respect to which they project laterally and are surrounded by those of the driving turbine.
Preferably, the driving and receiving turbine assembly is arranged inside a -carter which at the same time constitutes the reservoir for supplying the liquid, and the circulation of the liquid is obtained by spraying it. Ci, under the effect of the rotation of the driving and receiving turbine assembly and flow in a gutter disposed in the vicinity of the axis.
The accompanying drawing represents, schematically and by way of nonlimiting example, a particular embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the clutch device; Fig. 2 is another vertical section of the same device, 90 from the first, on a slightly reduced scale; Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 are explanatory diagrams of the operation of the device; Fig. 3 shows the circulation of the liquid entering between the turbines; Fig. 4 shows the clutch device at rest; Fig. 5 shows the device in the clutch position; Fig. 6 puts the device in the disengaged position.
In these various figures, 1 denotes the casing of the device which at the same time constitutes the reservoir containing the liquid, the introduction of which between the two turbines will cause the driving of one by the other of these turbines. This casing is provided externally and internally with cooling fins 2, 2 '. An orifice provided with a plug 16 allows .le filling of the crankcase.
Inside this housing are arranged the -two turbines which constitute the two elements -of; the clutch apparatus for power transmission.
The motor turbine is constituted by two stamped elements 3 and 4, fixed to one another so as to constitute a kind of drum, fixed by one of its faces in its central part to a plate 5, carried by the motor shaft 6. The latter is supported by the housing 1 by means of a ball bearing 7.
The blades 8, 8 'of this turbine placed inside the drum 3, 4 have the shape of semicircles shown in the drawings, hollowed out in their central part to allow the passage of the blades 10 of the receiving turbine. As shown in the drawing (fig. 1 and 2), these blades are strictly flat and do not include partitions which are perpendicular to the plane of the blades.
These blades 10 are carried by a circular plate which constitutes the body 9 of the receiving turbine.
The blades 8 of the power turbine comprise surfaces 8 'which surround the blades 10 so that the latter are almost completely surrounded by the blades 8, 8'. The shafts 8 and 10 of the driving and receiving turbines are symmetrical with respect to the central disc 9.
As shown in the drawing, part of the interstitial seals between the blades of the power turbine and the receiver turbine is directed in a direction transverse to the disc of the receiver turbine.
Experience has in fact shown that this arrangement allows better drive of one by the other of the two turbines.
The turbine 9, 10 -is wedged on a shaft 11, carried by ball bearings 12, 13 mounted one on the turbine 3, 4 and the other on the housing 1.
The rear part 4 of the drum which constitutes the turbine 3, 4 comprises a circular orifice 14 which is closed off by a plate 15 which will be discussed below. It is through this circular ori fice 14 that the liquid enters the drum 3 and 4, thanks to a gutter 17, 18, comprising a kind of spout 17 at its lower part and arms 18 which collect the liquid which, as well as this will be explained below, is driven in the upper part of the housing 1..
On the other hand, part 4 of the drum 3, 4 has on its periphery a certain number of orifices 19 through which the liquid escapes when the clutch is released, while other holes 20 are made in part 3 of the drum and whose role will be explained below.
The plate 15 which serves to close the orifice 14 is mounted on a sleeve 21 capable of sliding on the shaft 11 and the sliding movement of which can be obtained by a pedal 22, by means of a device with levers 23. Furthermore, the sliding movement of the sleeve 21 causes the tilting of a certain number of levers 24 articulated at 25 on consoles carried by part 4 of the drum 3, 4. These levers end in valve heads 26 which are likely to close the openings 19.
Masses 27 carried by the levers 24 tend, when the device is in rotation, to cause the levers 24 to pivot under the effect of the centri fuge force around their axes 25. so as to apply the valves 26 against the holes 19 .
We will now explain the way in which the device which has just been described operates. At rest, the appliance is filled with liquid, for example oil, up to the level indicated in fig. 4. This liquid occupies at the same time, of course, the lower part of the drum 3, 4. If the motor is then started,: the device being kept in the disengaged position by means of the pedal. 22 (fig. 6), the liquid which was contained in the drum 3, 4, driven by the blades 8 of the power turbine, is projected, under the effect of centrifugal force, outside the drum 3, 4 by the orifices 19 which, in the disengaged position, are not blocked by the valves 26.
At the same time, the drum 3, 4, by turning, entrains in its rotation, by its outer surface, the liquid which is inside the casing 1, and causes it to flow into the gutter 17 , 18. The movement of this liquid is also indicated in fig. 3. However, the plate 15 completely closing off the orifice 14, this liquid flows again into the lower part of the casing 1, following the path indicated by the arrows in fig. 6.
If, now, we abandon the clutch pedal 22, which has the effect of sliding the sleeve 21, the shutter disc 15 discovers the opening 14. At the same time, the levers 24 tilt under the effect of the centrifugal force exerted on the masses 27 and the valves 26 closes the ori fices 19. The liquid which was contained in the gutter 17, 18 bursts into the drum 3, 4 and can no longer escape through the orifices 19 which are now closed. Under the effect of centrifugal force, this liquid is distributed in a ring inside this drum until it reaches the level of the orifices 20 (FIG. 5), the overflow then flowing through these orifices.
But, as the drum 3, 4, by its outer surface, continues to entrain the liquid which is in the lower part of the casing 1 and to bring it into the gutter 17, 18, fresh liquid is continuously reintroduced and without pressure inside the drum 3, 4, while the overflow flows continuously through the orifices 20 and falls back into the lower part of the casing. The purpose of these orifices 20 is also to eliminate the depression which would exist in the motor turbine during rapid closing of the shutter disc and or opening of the valves 26, by allowing the entry of air into this turbine.
It is obvious that depending on the degree of opening of the orifices 19, a regime will be established which corresponds to a certain thickness of the liquid ring. It is therefore possible, by means of the pedal 22, to vary the thickness of the ring and, consequently, the slip of the clutch.
Now, thanks in particular to the interior 2 'and exterior 2 cooling fins, it is cold liquid which is located inside the casing 1 and which is consequently brought by the gutter 16, 17, to the inside the drum. On arriving inside this drum, the cold, denser liquid tends to reach the periphery of this drum and consequently drives out the liquid which has already heated up between the turbines and which escapes through the orifices. 20. There is thus a continuous supply of cold liquid inside the drum, an equivalent quantity of hot liquid being evacuated as and when.
Thus, the liquid contained between the turbines does not tend to heat up.
As regards the operation of the clutch itself, as in all devices of the same kind, the liquid which has entered the drum 3, 4, driven by the vanes 8, sets in motion, in turn, the vanes 10 of the receiving turbine and, little by little, the vanes of the latter turbine eventually feel the same speed as the vanes 8.
This start-up is carried out in a particularly efficient manner thanks in particular to the surfaces 8 ′ of the blades 8.
When you want to disengage, it suffices to press on the pedal 22, which has the effect, on the one hand, of closing off the orifice 14 of the liquid inlet and, on the other hand, of opening the orifices 19; no liquid therefore no longer penetrates into the drum 3, 4; on the other hand, that which was contained therein escapes under the effect of the cen trifuge force through the orifices 19, while air enters the drum through the orifices 20. This drum 3, 4 is consequently emptied very quickly. As there is no more liquid between the two turbines, the vanes 10 cease to be driven by the vanes 8. The apparatus is locked.
Numerous modifications can of course be made to the device described without departing from the scope of the present invention. In particular, the crankcase can be either green in the open air and provided with a baffle device, known per se, for causing the condensation of the oil vapors.
. On the other hand, the liquid, instead of being collected at the base of the casing containing the assembly of the two turbines, can be collected in a special tank preferably placed in the vicinity of the axis of the two turbines. in order to be able to empty directly when the clutch is engaged in the space between these -two turbines.
As regards the clutch device as a whole, it can be applied to the transmission of power both on stationary machines and on vehicles of all kinds, automobiles, etc. In the event that it would be mounted on an automobile, for example, it could, for example, be connected to an automatic release device.
Finally, the clutch and disengagement control device can be done in any suitable manner other than that which has been described.
