Description
Process for the production of a synthetic tanning agent. The main patent relates to a process for the production of a synthetic tanning agent by aftertreatment of the water-soluble product with cresol and formaldehyde, which can be obtained by condensation of cresol sulfonic acid with formaldehyde.
It has now also been found that a valuable tanning agent can be obtained if a water-soluble product obtained by condensation of the cresolsulphonic acid mixture obtained with formaldehyde by treating a mixture of the three isomeric cresols with a sulphonating agent until water solubility occurs Mixture of the three isomeric creoles, formaldehyde and urea can act on one another. In place of the formaldehyde, formaldehyde-producing substances can also be used.
The condensation product of cresol and formaldehyde that forms in the aftertreatment is dispersed in the product when it is formed, and a water-soluble or water-soluble form is formed. colloidally soluble end product.
The action of urea and formaldehyde expediently takes place before the aftertreatment with cresol and formaldehyde, but it can also be carried out simultaneously or afterwards. If the action of urea and formaldehyde takes place in a stage in which the reaction mixture is acidic without this, it is carried out in an acidic medium before geous; however, it can optionally also take place in an alkaline medium.
The treatment with cresol and formaldehyde can be carried out at relatively low temperatures, for example at 20 to 40.degree.
The amount of cresol and formaldehyde to be used and the ratio of the substances to one another can change, but only enough of the substances to be added is used that no significant amounts of insoluble fractions are deposited.
The new tanning agent has the advantage that it can be adjusted to be less acidic than that which has not been post-treated in the manner mentioned. It can be used in relatively large quantities in vegetable tanning. The ratio of the tanning to the non-tanning parts is also favorable. The tanning agent has a pronounced filling effect and gives leather of a particularly light color and good lightfastness. Example: 450 parts by weight of a mixture of the three isomeric cresols are sulfonated with 450 parts by weight of concentrated sulfuric acid at 100 ° C. The sulfonation product is condensed with 310 parts by weight of 30% strength formaldehyde.
A solution of 120 l parts by weight of urea in 120 parts by weight of water is added to the product obtained, condensed at 35 to 40 ° C. with a further 200 parts by weight of formaldehyde and neutralized with ammonia so that 10 g of the reaction mixture consume 11 to 12 cubic meters of sodium hydroxide solution . Then 216 parts by weight of a mixture of the three isomeric cresols are added, then 100 parts by weight of 30% formaldehyde are gradually added at 30 ° to 35 ° C. and the mixture is stirred until the formaldehyde is used up.
The tanning agent obtained can be adjusted with ammonium formate, magnesium formate or sodium formate so that the pH of its 10% solution is about 3.
The new tanning agent is ash-free, clearly soluble in water, cannot be melted without decomposition and has excellent tanning properties in schavach acidic solution.
