Lorsque, dans unie conduite, il faut passer d'un .diamètre à un autre, il est en effet utile d'éviter un :changement brusque dans la sec tion de passage du courant transporté par cette, condvite;
La fig. 1 est une vue latérale d'une por tion de conduite comportant la première forme d'exécution; la fig. 2 est une section de la conduite suivant la ligne 2-2 de la fig. 1; la fig. 3 est une vue partielle en section longitudinale suivant la ligne 3-3 de la fig. 2, -d'un détail de la construction;
1a fig.
Device for connecting two sections of cylindrical pipe of different diameters. The object of the invention is a device for connecting their cylindrical pipe sections (of different diameters,
having a connecting element in which the flow cross section decreases from one end to the other.
When, in a pipe, it is necessary to pass from one diameter to another, it is in fact useful to avoid a: sudden change in the section of passage of the current transported by this condvite;
a conical fitting of uniform slope and thickness is usually used for this purpose,
assembled by its opposite ends to the two cylindrical pipe sections of different diameters to be connected. This method of construction, as it is known to date, may be suitable under certain conditions,
when the elements of the pipe are subject only to very slight forces, owing to their dimensions, their weight, of the organs which:
support and transported fluid. But in other circumstances the problem may be quite different,
the various pipe elements being subjected to considerable static or other forces and it is to this type of pipe that the object of the invention is particularly intended to be applied. A typical example is that of the well-known installation:
of the Boulder Dam where the end elements of the penstocks and the other elements of the pipe have dimensions which vary - with an inside diameter of about 2,
50 m with an internal diameter of 9 m. The connecting elements of two cylindrical elements which are not of the same diameter are in such a duct subjected to particularly large forces. He ,
It is therefore useful to take into account not only the resistance to flow, but: these fatigue - in the construction of such an element: connection.
For this purpose, the connecting element of the device according to the invention comprises a main part continuing at one at least of its ends by a ring in which the flow cross section varies less rapidly than in the part. main and whose wall is thicker than that of this part.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the connection device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view of a portion of pipe comprising the first embodiment; fig. 2 is a section of the pipe taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a partial view in longitudinal section taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2, -a detail of the construction;
1a fig. 4 is a partial view in longitudinal section corresponding to FIG. 3, but relating to the second embodiment.
Fig. 1 shows a pipe portion comprising a cylindrical pipe section 1, and a cylindrical pipe section \ _? of smaller diameter than the first, connected according to the first embodiment of the device. The connecting element 3 of the device is connected by its ends at 4 and 5 respectively, to the cylindrical sections 1 and 2.
The element 3 comprises, as shown, a conical main part 6 of regular slope and thickness over its entire length, connected by its end:
of smaller diameter to a cylindrical ring 7, and at its end of larger diameter to. a ring 8. The assembly of part 6 with the rings 7 and 8 is obtained by welding at 9 and 10, so as to form a single-piece connecting element between the cylindrical sections 1 and 2.
The interlocking of element 3 with the longer section of the pipe. tall. diameter is made as shown in detail in fig. 3. This assembly corresponds to that which is the subject of Swiss patent No. 185490.
This assembly is carried out by means of an external hoop 11, welded to the section of cylindrical pipe of larger diameter 1. in 12 and 13, encircling the end of this section and inside (which engages the free end of the ring 8, the chamfered edge 14 of this ring 8 forming a void for the weld bead 13.
The pegs 15 are arranged in a zigzag way on the. circumference of the hoop and pass through facing holes made in this hoop and in the ring, these che towns being notched at 16, at their outer end, ide so as to form a groove in which the metal of the hoop is forced . At their inner end,
the dowels have a conical head embedded in a countersink in the wall of the ring 8.
A further simpler embodiment of the device is shown at 11a, fig. 4, where the connection element 3 is welded to one of the cylindrical sections .de pipe, the connection by welding 18 being made between them. adjacent edges of the ring 8 and of the cylindrical section 1. The ring 8 is welded to the main conical part of the element 3 as in the first embodiment.
The connection between the connecting element 3 and the section of smaller diameter 2 of the pipe can be made according to one of the methods which have just been described for the end of the larger diameter, the cylindrical ring 7 of the connecting element 3 being welded to the cylindrical element 2 or being connected with it by the hoop assembly previously described.
In each of the embodiments described, the ring 8 which forms the end of larger diameter of the connection element 3 has a conical inner surface of which the angle at the apex is smaller than that of the conical inner surface of part 6.
The thickness of this ring is greater than that of section 1 and part 6 and is uniform in s' a. middle part 19, but, at the ends, chamfers 20 and 21 11a. relate, on the one hand, to that of section 1 and, on the other hand. to that of the pirineipal part 6 of element 3.
The face of the chamfer 20 is cylindrical and lies in the extension of the outer surface of the section 1 and the surface of the chamfer 21 is tapered and lies in the extension of the outer surface of the main conical part. 6.
The ring 8 is preferably obtained from a ring having a uniform thickness, the parts 22 and 23, as shown by dotted lines, being removed by machining.
In fig. 4, the lines. in phantom lines 24 and 25 represent the exact internal profile of the pipe, if we remove the ring 8 and if we extend @le section 1 and part 6 to their junction on line 26.
The step from the large diameter to the smallest diameter in the region of the seal would then be sharper. In the same figure, the angle a indicates the angle! Of the change of taper from the cylindrical section 1,
and the angle b the change of -conicity when one -passes the ring 8 to the conical internal surface of the part 6, @and. the angle c the angle of change of slope,
if. Fon removed the ring 8 and if we made a direct junction of the cylindrical section 1 with the comic part 6; angles a and b are both less than angle c.
The lines @in dashed lines and the indications of the angles a, b and c could be transferred to fig. 3, but it was not done to avoid an unnecessary complication.
The constructions which have just been described thus ensure a progressive reduction in the diameter of the pipe by a succession of stages starting from a relatively large diameter, each stage corresponding to a regular reduction of the internal diameter of the pipe. conduct,
and resulting in a less rapid change in the taper from that which precedes it than if this reduction were made in a single stage over the same length.
The result is a more general variation of the section. flow only when there is only one change in paint, and this results in a reduction in the forces. the material. At the joint,
compared to #ux which would result from a direct junction between the section of pylindric pipe let a conical connection, of uniform slope and thickness over its entire length.
Another advantage is the greater thickness of the middle part of the ring, which reduces fatigue and the presence of end chamfers which give the lines,
a more regular path from one room to another and avoid the approximation of these lines of force in a region. The axes of the pipe sections which are being joined may not be in extension.
They could be eccentric with respect to one another, or form an angle between them and possibly require the use of a curved connection element.
