Description

  A titre d'exemple numérique, posons N,. 2.

         Les    angles     01    et     0,2    que font ces     vecteurs     entre eux sont en général<B>0,</B><I>= 2</I>     n   <I>. 2 N ,</I>     d,        /.1     et     OZ    = 2     n    .

2 NZ d2/.1.

A method of treating a transparent object with a view to reducing the amount of light reflected from at least one surface of this object and transparent object. treated according to this process. The present invention comprises a method of treating a transparent object with a view to reducing the amount of light reflected from at least one surface of this object.

This process is applicable to all kinds of transparent materials: mineral, such as glass, quartz or mica, or organic, such as transparent cellulose sheets, celluloid, artificial resins or other plastics.

Applied to optical elements such as lenses or prisms for spotting scopes, prism binoculars, telescopes, microscopes, cameras, sights for launching bombs, periscopes and the like, the method provides an improvement in these optical instruments. by making them eminently suitable for use at night or when the object to be observed is poorly lit.

With optical elements treated according to the method that comprises the invention, it is possible to produce complex optical systems in which no parasitic images occur. The method which the invention comprises is also applicable with advantage to windows, window glasses, glazing of picture frames, engravings and the like, display or shop windows and the like. In this case, it suppresses bothersome reflections.

In Swiss Patent No. 220789, a method of treating a transparent object has been described in order to reduce the amount of light reflected by at least one surface of this object, which consists in covering this surface with a transparent layer (obtained for example by evaporation), the optical thickness of which is substantially equal to an integer and odd multiple of a quarter of the wavelength of the light whose reflection is to be avoided. In one embodiment of this method, to cancel the reflection, a material is chosen such that the refractive index of the layer covering the surface of the treated object is equal to the square root of the refractive index of the object.

The refractive index of the transparent layer can be reduced by acting on the conditions (the evaporation. In certain cases, this reduction of the refractive index can lead to the use of specific materials for the constitution of this layer. , if you want it to be strong enough.

The treatment method that the present invention comprises is characterized in that the surface of which it is desired to reduce the quantity of light reflected by several transparent films such as the vector sum of the amplitudes of the light waves reflected by this surface of the transparent object and by the surfaces of said films tends towards zero.

It is possible, for example, to apply to the surface to be treated two formed films (1 (# different materials. The indices of these films may "be greater than that (the material which constitutes the treated object. The film which is located closest to the surface to be treated preferably has a higher refractive index than that of the other film.

We give advantageously. to the various pellets of optical thicknesses corresponding to the desired phase shift between the light waves reflected respectively by each of them and by the surface of the treated object.

To constitute two superposed films, one can have recourse. for example, has zinc sulfide, at. alumina, titanium oxide, corundum, carborundum, tin oxide, for the film, closest to the treated surface. and quartz or metal fluorides or fluosilicates for the other film.

In the case of multiple dandruff. there is no need to artificially reduce the refraction index of the dandruff, making them porous. All the films are then made up with the. highest possible density, to increase their robustness.

The transparent film or films can be obtained by evaporation in a rarefied atmosphere. They can also be created by means of vapors of mineral derivatives, such as metal chlorides, capable of being easily transformed into oxides, possibly by a subsequent heat treatment, such as for example: titanium chloride, chloride of tin, silicon tetrachloride.

Transparent films can also be obtained by spraying in the divided state, on the surface to be treated, solutions of salts which, after drying, can be transformed into oxides by a heat treatment.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example and schematically, an embodiment of a transparent object treated according to the method which the invention comprises.

The fib. 1 is a cross section, greatly enlarged, of a transparent object coated with two films.

The fi ,,. \? and; 3 show how the amplitudes of the light waves, reflected respectively by the, can be added vectorially. surface of the object and by the two films.

We know, from Fresnel, (read, when the light passes from the air into a transparent material of refractive index jr, or conversely, a fraction of the incident light

is reflected from the surface. This fraction (reflected light is usually 4% or more of incident light, per area.

In many cases, it creates parasitic images, which are troublesome in an optical system, and which always represent a quantity (the light that would otherwise be transmitted. If you deposit a film on a material, there is reflection. at the surface separating the air from the film and at the contact surface between the film and the material.

According to a particular embodiment of the process that comprises the invention, several optically active films are used, the optical thicknesses and the refractive indices of which are chosen so that the light waves reflected respectively by the treated surface and by the outer surfaces of the various layers cancel each other out by interference.

With two superimposed films, the refractive indices of which may be higher than that of glass, the reflection can be practically canceled for a limited region of the spectrum. The reduction in reflection extends over a wider region of the spectrum if a relatively very high refractive index film is used against the surface of the glass and, above, a relatively low index film.

As the material constituting the high index film located against the glass (in certain cases on a thin intermediate layer of a metal oxide such as chromium oxide), zinc sulphide, oxide of aluminum, titanium oxide, corundum, carborundum and tin oxide. Films having a refractive index of about 2 or more have been obtained by evaporation of these materials.

The low refractive index films consisted of quartz and metal fluorides. It should be noted here that, in the case of fluorides, the cancellation of the reflection is not obtained by an artificial reduction in the refractive index of the films, making them porous. All films are preferably made as dense as possible, in order to increase their strength.

There are many means of obtaining that the light waves reflected by the various surfaces concerned have a geometric sum of zero. Here is an example of a film that has a high index layer near the glass followed by a lower index film.

The condition to be satisfied to cancel the reflection is that the indices and the thicknesses of the films are chosen so that: <B><I>AI-,</I> </B> + A2_1 + Al_g = 0 where the A are the vectors which represent the light waves reflected by the various surfaces concerned (fig. 1).

  As a numerical example, let N ,. = 1.50, Nl = 2.00 and NZ - 1.40. Then comes Aa_2 - 0: 167, A2_1 = 0.176 and A1_b - 0.143. These vectors can have a geometric sum of zero for any desired wavelength .1o, as shown in fig. 2.

For this particular example, assuming do 3500 Å, the optical thickness Nl <I> dl </I> of the first film, as given by e1 = 2 n 2 Nl dl / 4, is approximately 2800 A, and the optical thickness N2 d2 of the second cell is approximately 1000 A.

For wavelengths larger and smaller than), o, the reflection increases somewhat, but is greatly reduced in a wavelength field large enough to be suitable for many photographic and visual uses.

  The reflected light is given by the formula: R - (Aa_2 -I- A2_l -f- Al_g) 2 where the A's are added geometrically.

         The angles 01 and 0.2 that these vectors make between them are generally <B> 0, </B> <I> = 2 </I> n <I>. 2 N, </I> d, /.1 and OZ = 2 n.

2 NZ d2 / .1. (OZ is the angle between the vector Aa_2 and the vector <B> A, - ,, 19, </B> is the angle between the vector A2_1 and the vector Al_g. It is interesting to note that in this example , R increases to a maximum value of about 2% in the ultraviolet, around 4000 A and then decreases again, almost to zero, further in the ultraviolet, around 3000 A.

This behavior is different from that of plain film.

The dispersion of the film (since N is a function of .1) has been neglected for simplicity. Its effect is relatively weak and can sometimes be used to advantage.

In this numerical example, the three vectors can also be added to give zero, as shown in fig. 3. According to fig. 2, the optical thickness of the first film was the greatest. According to fig. 3 is the opposite.

According to fig. 2 and 3, it is clear that <B> 0, </B> or O2, or both, can be increased by multiples of 2 n (360 degrees) by increasing the optical thickness of a stack of multiples of .10 / 2. This, however, has the effect of narrowing the region of the spectrum in which reflection is virtually eliminated.

From the above and from Figs. 2 and 3, it appears that the reflection is practically eliminated in a larger field of the spectrum, if one chooses, to constitute the films. matters such as N, that is more. large and <B><I><U>N.</U></I> </B> smaller than in the example.

It has been assumed in the above that the films are transparent, so that the decrease in reflection is fully added to the transmitted light. It is also possible to eliminate reflection by the methods described, using films which are partially absorbent. In this case, the amplitude vectors are slightly. changed, in size and direction. when the absorption is taken into account in the calculation by means of known optical laws. Dandruff that absorbs in violet and ultraviolet are or may be useful for eyeglasses.

For the sake of simplicity, in the example above, we have limited ourselves to: the use of two films, but it is possible to provide embodiments in which any number of films are used for which Reflection vectors have a geometric sum which, added to the reflection vector of the transparent object's surface, tends to zero.

More than one film can also be used for purposes other than reducing the. re fl ection or increased transmission or both. For example, a layer can be used to protect the underlying films or to bind other films together or to the glass.

The following table shows the results: obtained with a few determined combinations. It includes the indication of the materials used (in the order of their deposition on the glass), the 'value of <I> R </I> (reflectivity) and of <I> T </I> (transmission) , for the ends of the visible spectrum, as well as the wavelength for which R is at its minimum:

Among the double films, those formed by ZnS -f- Si0 \ and Sb2S3 + MgF = are the hardest and most robust. Both can be baked with advantage, to give them greater resistance to water and abrasion. All of the combinations listed above had, without baking or other further processing, sufficient strength to withstand vigorous brushing with a soft brush.

With respect to the values of T given in the table above, it should be noted that the glass plates used in the various tests were coated with films on one side only. Consequently, the maximum value of the transmission could not, in these tests, exceed 96% o. Two of the above tests gave transmissions equal to 95.5% or 99.5% of the theoretical maximum.

In one implementation of the method, a particularly robust multiple film consists of 1o a chromium layer, having the thickness of a few atoms and which is subsequently oxidized by exposure to air; 20 an alumina (sapphire) film with a thickness a little more than À0 / 4, and <B> 30 </B> a quartz film with a thickness of a little more than .10 / 4. This multiple film cannot be scratched with a fingernail and is resistant to washing with soap and water.

The reflectivity in the region of the spectrum to which the eye is most sensitive -is about <B> 0.670. </B> It is about 4% in the violet and about 2 in the red.

It can be seen from the data in the above table that when the film closest to the glass has a lower refractive index than the film above it, the reflectances are high over the range of the visible spectrum. It should also be noted that a multiple film giving a low minimum reflectance only in a very limited field of the spectrum, with a high general reflectance, is produced by applying on a glass plate a multiplicity of films (for example a of zinc sulphide and one of sodium fluoride, alternately).

A given thickness can be obtained in many ways for each of the films constituting a multiple film. Thus, when using the evaporative process to apply the film, one can proceed as follows: When creating a single film using a given material, and chosen evaporation conditions, the only variable is the film thickness.

The correct distance from the heater (i.e. evaporator) (to the plate being processed, to give the correct optical thickness, can be determined by doing an evaporation test in the form of corner on a glass plate, tilted at an angle on the evaporator-plate direction. As one edge of the plate is closer to the evaporator, it receives a thicker film deposit than the other, and the variation is gradual, going from the thickest on the nearer edge of the evaporator to the thinner on the furthest edge (hence the name "wedge").

In making this preliminary study, it is good that the angle of the wedge is as small as possible, so that the results found can be applied to the uniform coating of a plate attacked by the vapors at a substantially zero angle of incidence. . The refractive index of a film is in fact a function of the angle of impact of the vapors (the index decreasing when the angle of incidence increases).

On the "wedge", by examination or by measurement, one can locate the particular position or the thickness of the layer which gives the reflectance desired for a given wavelength of the miner.

Knowing the position of the "wedge" with respect to the evaporator, it is possible to determine how far the object must be placed for a correct coating, under the conditions chosen, by using a given quantity of material. The thickness of the layers in a double film can be determined by an extension of the above “corner” test, namely: a cross-corner test. ”Thus, evaporation of the film can be carried out. test on a rectangular glass plate.

We take as the x axis an edge of this plate and an adjacent edge as the y axis. The substance which is to be in contact with the glass is evaporated in a wedge shape, for example with the thick end of the wedge along the x-axis. We then rotate the. test plate 90 degrees into its own plane and the second substance is evaporated on the same side of the plate below the. shape of a "wedge" the thick end of which is along the axis of the left. The result is a "cross-corner" sample, on which one can find all the combinations of thicknesses of the two films, within the limits imposed by the maxima and minima of the component corners.

Exactly as in the case of the single wedge test for a single film, so one can. determine the correct amount of material that needs to be evaporated, for a certain distance between the sample and the evaporator, for each film, or vice versa, the correct distance for a chosen amount of material.

Finally, the suitable thicknesses for the components of a double film can be determined as follows: We first calculate the approximate thicknesses, starting from the known indices of the two substances in the massive form, and taking into account that skin indices will generally be lower than massive indices.

A cross-corner test is then carried out under the conditions chosen. The quantities of material evaporated are noted.

The position, on the crossed corners, of the point (or zone) of minimum reflection. indicates the quantity of material which must be evaporated for the chosen evaporation distance.

It is clear that one can, if desired, modify the test mode defined above, to determine the correct evaporation time of each substance to be evaporated. The cross-corner test can also be used in the following manner: The reflectivity of the first corner can be measured, before the top film is applied.

When the second wedge is added and the position of the minimum reflectivity has been located on the crossed corners, the corresponding reflectivity of the sub film is known by itself, and the plates to be coated uniformly (such as in regular production) can receive their first film accordingly. They are therefore established until they reach the reflective power chosen beforehand, under photometric control.

The deus films are then established, in the second evaporations, until the reflectivity of the resulting double film becomes minimum (or, more generally, until the desired final reflective powers are achieved).

Anti-reflective films can be created by processes other than the deep vacuum evaporation process. Thus, it is possible, where appropriate, to treat the glass at. the hot state, by a vapor of a metal chloride, in order to form on the glass an adherent film of metal oxide, and cover this film of metal oxide with a surface layer of a material appropriate. For example, glass can be treated at a temperature of 200 to 400 ° C., with titanium tetrachloride vapors, for a determined time. A titanium oxide film of determined thickness is thus formed on the glass.

It is then possible to carry out a new treatment with silicon tetrachloride, and to reduce the deposition of the latter in silica, by a suitable heat treatment. Tin oxide and / or iron oxide can be deposited in an analogous manner on the glass.

It is also possible to spray an aqueous solution of a metal salt onto the surface of the glass, to dry the deposit and then to subject the glass object thus coated to a heat treatment suitable for converting the salt into metal oxide. In this case also, the materials constituting the successively applied films are chosen so as to achieve between the reflectances the relationships indicated above.
