Description

Kunststoffdichtung.

Plastic seal. The corrosion resistance of many polyvinyl plastics, as well as that made from the isoolefin polymers, has enabled them to be used in sealing compounds.

The plastics made from polyvinyl compounds, in particular those made from polyvinyl chloride, require the simultaneous use of plasticizers or softer plastics for this purpose in order to ensure the elastic adherence to the mating surfaces of the seal to be installed. However, this reduces the corrosion resistance of these sealants against a number of attacking media.

In many cases, it is possible to replace these plasticized polyvinyl plastics with those based on polyisoolefins, in particular polyisobutylene. Nevertheless, it does not succeed in achieving a significant expansion of the field of application of these plastic seals.

The restriction resp. Shifting the corrosion resistance of the compounds mentioned had a particularly detrimental effect when these seals were to be installed in lines, valves or other fittings, which in turn also consist of the plastics mentioned at the beginning.

As has now been found, all these disadvantages can be avoided by a plastic seal device, which is characterized in that the actual sealing body consisting of a soft, pliable material is covered at least on part of its surface with a corrosion-resistant film.

With this new arrangement it is achieved that the necessary elastic clinging is maintained, but the application range of the sealing compounds is much larger; because it now depends exclusively on the corrosion resistance of the outer, in comparison to the actual sealing compound, which is more corrosion-resistant than the cover.

The seals are designed as follows, for example: An annular, pliable seal made of 60 parts of polyvinyl chloride - @ 38 parts of gelatinizing plasticizer -f- 2 parts of pigment is protected with a film of polyvinyl chloride by pulling and then flanging.

All parts that come into contact with liquid are therefore made of hard polyvinyl chloride. In addition to plasticized polyvinyl chloride, the required elasticity can also be provided, for example, by a molding made of polyisobutylene or other plastics. Likewise, instead of the hard polyvinyl chloride, a film made of, for example, polyvinyl arbazole, polyamide, cellulose triacetate, cellulose methyl ether and other plastics can be used as the outer covering, depending on the requirements of corrosion resistance.

In general, it will be sufficient to wrap the outer film around a softer inner part without further fastening; however, disc-shaped seals can also be used in which an upper and a lower film are connected to one another, for example by gluing, welding or pressing.

In the case of annular seals, the upper and lower foils serving to protect the inner part can also be connected to one another at their abutment surfaces, for example by gluing or welding. The pliable inner part can also be made of completely corrosion-resistant material. A particularly elastic fit will be achieved when the inner part has a spongy structure.

When using the seals in piston valves built with polyvinyl chloride moldings, for example, the soft inner part will be covered by the more corrosion-resistant polyvinyl chloride film approximately in the arrangement of FIG. 1 of the drawing, in section Darge provides. Here a denotes the ring-shaped soft inner part and b denotes the covering obtained by drawing and flanging.

To seal flange connections of pipelines, one uses, for example, a seal in the embodiment of FIG at b. The beaded part of the film c can if necessary be firmly verbun in a recess of b by gluing or the like.
