Apparatus for making coverings from leaves.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for producing coatings from matt.

According to the invention, this apparatus is distinguished by at least one air-impermeable membrane, the edges of which are attached to a frame, and by a means. around. after inserting the sheet and the surface to be coated with it between a support and the membrane. to be able to releasably connect the frame airtight to the base, furthermore by means of generating a partial vacuum between the base and the membrane, which is so flexible that it clings to the irregularities of the surface .

Exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown in the drawing. namely the same shows the application apparatus for applying surface films to embossed signals or surface markings.

   In the drawing shows:
Fig. 1 is a view of the work piece,
FIG. 2 shows, on a larger scale, a section through the same along line 2-2 in FIG. 1,
3 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment of the vacuum chamber in the open position with a signal inserted therein and a film to be attached to the front surface of the signal, partially covering the same.

4 shows a perspective illustration of the same vacuum chamber in the closed state together with the connections with a suction pump,
5 on a larger scale shows a cross section approximately along line 5-5 in FIG. 4,
Fig. 6 is a similar cross section of a different embodiment of the vacuum chamber with flexible membranes for exerting pressure on both sides of the workpiece and
7 shows, on an even larger scale, a partial section through the edge portion of the work piece after it has been removed from the chamber shown in FIG.

The signal disc 7 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is punched out of a sheet metal in the usual way and has an embossed edge elevation 8 and letters 9 protruding above its front surface 10.

11 denotes a surface film made from a preformed sheet of synthetic resin or other suitable material of sufficient elasticity so that it can be stretched to accommodate the irregularities of the embossed sign. The present apparatus is used to keep such films or sheets under pressure and to stretch them when placed on the workpiece, while an adhesive coating is brought to solidify between the film and the shield.

As can be seen from FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, a vacuum chamber is used to receive the signal to be inserted. This container has a rectangular, serving as a base lower part 12 with edge flanges 13 and a hinged AbschluBdeckel with a frame 14 that carries a flexible and elastic membrane 15, which rests on the film 11 and the signal on the base. The frame 14 can be placed to close on the edge portions of the lower part 12 and is for this purpose by means of hinges 16 a. Connected to the same on one side. To achieve the desired rigidity, the frame 14 has flanges 17 along its outer edges and flanges 18 along its inner edges.

The edge parts of the membrane 15 are held by suitable means with an uninterrupted tight seal on the outer surface of the body forming the frame 14, e.g. B. by means of a suitable glue or adhesive. Within the rectangular opening formed by the frame 14, the membrane 15 is exposed to atmospheric pressure on its outer surface and to the suction effect generated in the chamber on its inner surface.

This membrane preferably consists of an elastic, synthetic or natural Eautsohukkomposition. To seal the connection between the adjacent surfaces of the frame 14 and the lower part 12, an uninterrupted, compressible seal 19 or a sealing ring is used on the upper side of the lower part 12. This seal can consist of a soft rubber hose.

In order to make the sealing pressure generated by the atmospheric pressure on the seal as high as possible as soon as a vacuum is generated in the chamber, the seal 19 is attached near the outer edge of the frame 14, and its contact area with the frame is smaller than that Inner surface of the frame 14, which is exposed to the negative pressure in the chamber.

A suction line 20 is connected to the interior of the vacuum chamber and is connected to a suction pump 22 (FIG. 4) by means of a hose 21, and a valve 23 is used to regulate the air flow through the pipe 20 and the hose 21. A wire mesh sheet 24 lies over the inlet end of the tube 20 and extends over the lower part 12 to create small passages for the air which flows out of all parts of the space 25 between the base 12 and the membrane 15 when the chamber is closed. A number of spaced apart strips 2fi are attached to the top of the wire mesh 24 to rest against the lower surface of the shield 7.

Before placing the signal and film in the vacuum chamber, the back of the film or the front of the signal or both surfaces are coated with a suitable adhesive. If an adhesive to be heated is used, it is left to dry sufficiently so that its exposed surface loses its tough adhesive properties until it is made effective again by heating; then, as can be seen from FIG. 3, in the open chamber the signal label is placed on the backing strips 26 above the backing 12 and the film 11 is laid flat on the front surface 10 of the signal.

The film may be in the form of a rectangular sheet of such a size that it protrudes slightly from the different sides of the signal in the chamber. Then the cover formed by the frame 14 and the membrane 15 is lowered onto the seal 19, and the air is sucked out of the vacuum chamber through the hose 21 connecting the tube 20 to the pump. As a result, the membrane 15 is sucked inwardly across the entire upper surface of the film 11 and presses the adhesive surface of the film on the signal with sufficient force to stretch the film so that it fits into the various depressions between the embossed and raised sheets. ache and comes into contact with all crooked and deep lying surfaces.

Both the membrane 15 and the film 11 are sufficiently elastic to match the irregular surface of the signal exactly, while all air between the film 11 and the shield 7 is sucked out. This anal) adaptation of the membrane 15 to the surface 10 according to FIG. 4 is achieved automatically by the force of the atmospheric pressure, which is evenly applied to the outer () herfläehe of the membrane 15 and then to the film.

Then, while maintaining the pressure, the vacuum chamber and the film together with the substrate therein are heated to a temperature sufficient to bring the adhesive into effect and to solidify. If an appropriate adhesive is used, the final bonding and bonding can be brought about by increasing the temperature to 95 to 100 ° C. over a short period of time. For this purpose, the vacuum chamber can be immersed in hot drainer or heated in some other way by e.g. B.

Radiant heat can act on the outer surface of the membrane 15 for the required period of time. Warming up to around 99¯ C for half a minute to 5 minutes is sufficient to end the process.

It is clear that a partial vacuum is maintained in the chamber during the heat treatment and that a sufficiently long hose 21 is provided to enable the chamber to be moved into and out of a hot water container or other heater without operating the suction pump having to interrupt if this is desired or is necessary due to imperfections in the chamber.

When the heat treatment is finished or when the adhesive has set, air is admitted through the tube 20 into the vacuum chamber. The chamber can then be opened and the work piece can be removed from it. Superfluous film material which protrudes at the edges of the signal is finally cut off, and the uninterrupted film 11 is now permanently and firmly connected to the surface of the sign 7. A contrasting color coating can then be applied to the surface parts of the letters 9 and the edge 8, if desired using an application roller for liquid paint or in some other way.

The embodiment of the vacuum chamber shown in FIG. 6 can be used to apply finished films or sheets to both side surfaces of a signal or another surface. This Kam -ner has two opposite angeord designated, flexible, elastic membranes 27 and 28, which are mounted on frames 29 and 30. The two frames are connected to one another by hinges 31 on one side, and a seal 32 is provided, similar to seal 19, to seal the space between the opposing frame surfaces.

The edges of the airtight membranes 27 and 28 are airtightly attached to the outer surfaces of the associated frames, whereby an airtight chamber 33 is formed between the membranes when the two frames with the intermediate seal 32 are placed on top of one another, the outer surfaces the membranes and frame are under atmospheric pressure.

A tube 34 is connected to the interior of the chamber and a screen of fine wire mesh 35 lies over the inner mouth of this tube and extends towards the inner part of the chamber. This wire mesh strip separates the membranes from one another and results in a large number of fine channels which allow air to flow through to and out of the inner end of the tube 34. The end of the chimney strip 35 which is further away from the tube 34 is preferably arranged close to an edge of the signal substrate 7 and between protruding edges of the surface films when the latter are placed in the vacuum chamber.

The tube 34 protruding from the frame 29 is connected to a suction pump or other apparatus for creating a vacuum in the chamber in the same way as the tube 20 in FIG.

In FIGS. 6 and 7, 36 denotes a finished film for covering the back of the signal or the substrate. This film can be bonded to the base at the same time as the film 11 is adhered to the front by the following procedure. Before the free films and the substrate are placed in the vacuum chamber, coatings of adhesive are applied to the surfaces of the films or of the substrate to be joined, or to both. For this purpose, adhesives that are to be heated are preferably used.

After the application of the electrolyte coatings to the films and the substrate, the substrate 7 can be combined with the films 11 and 36 after the frame 30 supporting the membrane 28 has been opened opposite the frame 29 supporting the D membrane 27. It can e.g. B. the film 36 first spread on the inner side of the membrane 27 with the adhesive coating upwards, then the base is placed on the film 36 and then the film 11 with the Elebstofüberzug are spread down on the upper side of the base. Of course, one can also proceed the other way round by first placing the film 11 on the membrane 27 with its upper side facing down.

The vacuum chamber is then closed in order to bring the membrane 28 into contact with the upper film (as shown in FIG. 6, film 11), and the suction pump is activated to remove the air from the closed chamber and between the upper surface films and vacuum from the base.

As a result, the films and membranes are precisely matched to the two sides of the base. Bt, as can be seen from FIG.

Atmospheric pressure acting on the outer surfaces of the frames 29 and 30 produces pressure effects on the seal 32 and, due to the contact of the seal 32 close to the outer periphery of the frame and the relatively small contact area of the seal compared to the inner surfaces of the frames under suction, creates an extremely tight seal .

The chamber and the workpiece enclosed therein can, as described above. subjected to a heat treatment to make the adhesive effective and solidify. The excess film material protruding from the edges of the signal can be cut off and the raised areas can be colored in a known manner.

If a water pipe or another liquid of sufficient pressure is available, a jet pump can be used in place of the suction pump 22 to generate the negative pressure. It goes without saying that the size and shape of the vacuum chamber can be changed within wide limits in accordance with the different sizes and shapes of the bodies to be coated with films. If the body to be coated with a film is too large to be placed in a vacuum chamber, a film can be placed on any surface part of the body, which then serves as a base for a single frame such as the frame 29 with its membrane 27.

The seal 32 and the means for creating a vacuum between the membrane and the workpiece are used as explained earlier. Such simple frames can e.g. B. can be used to stick a prepared marking film on the side wall or other surface of a railroad car, aircraft or other vehicle. The frame must be so stiff that it cannot be deformed by atmospheric pressure.

The various rigid parts of the apparatus are best made of light metals, for better handling and so that an apparatus that is not too heavy can also be used for larger shapes. For many types of work pieces, the insertion of the same into the vacuum chamber can be seen on an ordinary table and the chamber Ia. can be quickly and easily brought into and removed from a heating device.

No clamps or other mechanical fastening devices are required to keep the dite frame (s) closed, in that the airtight, perfect seal is first achieved by simply squeezing it together by hand and the atmospheric pressure only serves to effect the final, firm seal which cannot be opened unintentionally under normal conditions. This effective finish is achieved even if the apparatus is not made very precisely. and there is no need to somehow work on the interface of the frame or the frames.

It follows from this that the apparatus shown is simple and cheap and in many cases results in a great saving of time and labor when applying and attaching finished films to workpieces. Part of this saving is due to the elimination of any manual labor involved in stretching the surface film to precisely match it to the irregular surface of the workpiece, since this process is automatically taken care of during the suction of air between the film and the workpiece. Both the film and the work piece are advantageously air-impermeable.
