Device for the remote reversal of the direction of travel of toy locomotives and other electric toys. The present invention relates to a positive device for remote reversing of the direction of travel of toy locomotives, railcars and other electric toys, combined with the motor of these toys, this deinier comprising two opposite windings, one for running forward, the other for reverse gear.
In most of the known devices of this kind, the inversion of the. operation is done by interrupting the current. It follows that after each forward gear, for example, a reverse gear must obligatorily follow, and vice versa. Such devices have the drawback of not allowing trains to be started in the same direction, two or more times in a row.
Some other mechanisms, also known, use in superposition or in temporary replacement of the alternating current supplying the motor, another current, generally direct, acting on the gear change apparatus proper. There follows a rather big complication. both for the device itself, which must include a polarized relay, and for the transformer or current distributor; for which a special direct current source must be provided. The operation of these mechanisms is relatively delicate and their cost price is necessarily high.
Other devices use two separate circuits, one, intended. to the power supply of the engine of the machine, the other, exclusively. reserved for the control of the inverter itself. This system, which seems attractive! T. At first sight, imposes a great complication on the whole network and the trains. In order to maintain the normal three-rail track, these three rails must be electrically isolated from each other. It is also necessary to isolate either the wheels or the axles from all the rolling stock on the tracks, to avoid short circuits by the mass of this rolling stock. This results in a complicated and particularly expensive implementation.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks and the device which makes it the object is characterized in that it comprises switching means allowing, to stop the toy, either to lower the current supplying the common circuit of operation and reversing at a rate insufficient to actuate the electric motor, but sufficient: to maintain the reversing device in the state it was in when it was stopped, so that, on a new start rage, the toy starts again in the same direction, ie to completely interrupt said common circuit in order to automatically cause the reversal of movement during the first start which follows this interruption.
This device operates reliably thanks to the fact that the supply current is interrupted when the reversing control is operated.
In a particular embodiment of the object of the invention, the maintenance, in the inverter, during periods of stopping the toy, of a current insufficient to restart the latter, but sufficient to stabilize the toy. invert to the position he was just now.
before stopping, is obtained by the use of a switching handle, with, double contact, allowing the sending of the current without interruption between the gear change pads, in combination with a pad, corresponding to the power supply said low voltage for stopping without inversion, this voltage drop being produced simply by a resistance of suitable value. This pad is also put into circuit without interrupting the current, this only occurring if said lever is brought to an isolated pad, corresponding to stopping with reversal.
The appended drawing shows schematically, by way of example, an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a power supply transformer, and FIG. 2 shows the whole of this embodiment.
The transformer, for example for current 110 volts, with its primary 1 and its condaire 2, feeds the channel 3 by the intermediary of a switch comprising a handle 4, rotating on an axis 5, and a certain number of walking blocks at different speeds: 6 to 9, here four in number.
On either side of this bank of studs are arranged two other studs, 10 and 11, respectively for stopping without reversal and for stopping with reversal. As long as the handle 4 circulates on the pads 6 to 9 and 10, it remains, by its tail, in contact with a conductive strip 12, in series on the track circuit, but it leaves this strip passing over the pad 11.
When the handle is on stop pad 10 without version, the current supplied by the secondary of the transformer passes through resistor 13 (for example 30 ohms) and its voltage drops to approximately 5 volts. The engine of the locomotive comprises an inductor with two windings 14, 15, respectively for forward and reverse, connected to two poles 16, 17, on which the common supply and reverse circuit, connected to the track slider 18, can be closed,
depending on the position occupied by a rocker with fork 19, cooperating for the version, with an oscillating push finger 20 returned by a spring 21 and controlled by the movable soft iron pallet 22 of an inverting electromagnet 23.
The operation of this device is as follows: Assuming that the reversing mechanism occupies the position shown in fig. 2, when the lever is on pad 10, the current passing through the winding 14 is too weak to operate the engine of the locomotive and the latter remains stationary, but this current is sufficient to maintain the locomotive. pallet 22 in position A (solid line).
When the lever is brought to pin 6, the current no longer passes through the resistance, which brings its voltage to approximately 10 volts; the engine is started and the locomotive starts , for example in forward gear (position A).
The pads 7, 8 and 9 give higher voltages allowing greater speeds.
On pin 11 - stop with reversal - the current is cut, # which has the effect. to suppress the flow of the electromagnet 23, and the paddle 22, under the influence of the spring 21, takes position B (dotted line).
If we then replace the lever on pad 9. then on one of the other pads 8, 7, 6 or 10. the current, restored in the track and the electromagnet 23, attracts the paddle 22 which drives the pusher 20 acting on the fork 19. This leaves the pad 16 which supplied the bearing 14 of the inductor (forward) and comes into contact with the pad 17 which supplies the winding 15 of the inductor (reverse). The reversal is obtained.
On the other hand, if the lever 4 goes from one of the pads 6 to 9 to the pad 10, the train stops, but starts again in the same direction when this lever is brought back to one of these pads.
It should be noted that pad 11 (stop with inversion) is close to pad 9 (maximum voltage pad). The switch from the Il pads to 9, which causes the operation of the pallet, finger and fork mechanism, is carried out under the best possible conditions, that is to say with the voltage difference maximum, producing a straightforward appeal of the pallet. Correct operation is thus assured with certainty.
The device described and shown in the drawing has the following advantages: 1o Safety of the control of the inversion thanks to the two windings of the inductor which only involve a single contact to obtain the inversion instead of two in the inverters known.
20 Lack of auxiliary circuits and special isolation precautions.
do Stability of the direction of travel ensured by the fact that a very low voltage, less than 5 volts, is sufficient to hold the inverter paddle in place.
40 Possibility to start at will, either in forward or reverse gear, as many times as desired. As long as the transformer handle remains on pads F to 10, stopping and running are obtained, at different speeds, in a determined direction. The change of direction, of the course is obtained only by passing on the stud 11.
50 Simplicity of construction of the device. 60 Possibility of reducing the inverter itself to the following approximate dimensions: 40 X 15 X 20 mm, hence the possibility of use in a locomotive or miniature railcar for track 00.
70 The fact of maintaining a low voltage current in the track, even when the locomotive is stopped, makes it possible to add electrical accessories to the network, the operation of which remains permanently assured , with the simple exception of small power cuts which occur at the time of each change of position. This fact can be exploited with advantage for, luminous accessories such as: lampposts, signals, headlights, etc., or for any other kind of accessories.
